More Wisdom from my Grandmother on why doing what is right can be hard.

If doing the right thing was so easy all the time, everyone would do it.

Grandmother’s wisdom on working mothers

Posted in Wisdom from my Grandmother

While I know this is far from politically correct, it is true none the less. Here is more Wisdom from my Grandmother on this subject.

No one can do two jobs well. You can pretend and argue and fool your self and others, but you can not change the truth.  A woman can not do the job of motherhood well and have a career (notice please the difference between a needed job and a career). One will suffer.  You will not let it be the job because a boss could care less if a child is sick or needs extra help with homework.  The “job” of motherhood will always come in second place because there is no pay check or  accountability. ...in this life.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a career.  But do not punish children because you want it.  Do not have any.

How to have a long & healthy marriage

Posted in Wisdom from my Grandmother

More widsom from my Grandmother who will be celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary this spring.

The secret to having a good marriage is for women to do the following:

Never criticize your husband in public, not even around good friends; wait until you get in private to tell him he sounds like the biggest horse’s butt on the planet.

First thing you need to do in a new neighborhood

Posted in Wisdom from my Grandmother

Here is another installment  from the popular category of Wisdom from my Grandmother:

When you move into a new neighborhood, let your children and dogs go.  Whoever’s house they end up staying around, go make friends with them.  They will be the nicest people in the neighborhood.  If the child or dog does not like a neighbor, stay away from them! You can fool an adult, but a child and a dog will see right through you.

Let them have thread?

Posted in Wisdom from my Grandmother

When I was very young, I was playing on the floor when a friend of my Grandmother came to visit.  Grandmother said I went over to her sewing basket and took out a spool of thread.  I sat down and proceeded to unwind it; having the time of my life.

Greatly annoyed, my Grandmother's friend asked, "Are you going to just sit there and not stop that child from wasting the thread?"

"Well, first of all, she is being quiet and having a great time," came my Grandmother's answer, "Second, would you like to tell me where else I could find such a engaging toy for under a quarter?"

We have always done it this way

Posted in Wisdom from my Grandmother

While humorous, I think this story makes a good point about how what we do can affect future generations.  My Grandmother was telling me this story of a friend of hers the other day.  The friend was teaching her teenage daughter how to cook a roast.  She started off by telling her to cut the roast in half before she put it in the pot.

"Why?" the teenager asked.

"Well, I do not know," her mother answered, "it was the way my mother taught me."

So the mother called her mother.

Again, the answer was, "I do not know.  That is the way your Grandmother has always done it.  I will call her and ask."

So she called HER elderly mother and asked, "Mama, why did you always cut the roast in half before you cooked it?"

"Oh, that is easy dear,"came the reply, "I never had a pot big enough so I had to cook it a half at a time."

On Marrital Problems

Posted in Wisdom from my Grandmother

This should actually be under wisdom from my Great-Grandmother.  My Grandmother has told me this story many times.  When she was just married, my Grandfather did something that upset her.  She went home to her mother and began to complain about whatever it was.

Her mother, put up her hand and asked calmly, "Did he hit you?"

Shocked, my Grandmother anwered, "Of course not, Mama."

"In that case," came her mother's answer, "I do not want to hear about it.  Go home and work it out."

That was over 59 years ago.

Is cheap always a good value

Posted in Wisdom from my Grandmother

Here is some more wisdom from my Grandmother.  At the family reunions, when all of my siblings and cousins were swimming or eating, I was sitting at my Grandmother's and her siblings' feet listening to their stories.  This is a wealth of wisdom you will never find in a book.

I know the vast majority of us are looking for ways to live cheaply.  My Grandmother use to tell about a friend she had. Now this friend had to feed a rather large family.  She would cook a huge pot of beans at the begining of the week.  At the end of the week, she would throw it away.  My Grandmother would ask her why.  Her answer was that beans were cheap.  My Grandmother pointed out that NO ONE in her family could stand beans, as a matter of fact her friend would not even eat them.  "But I am saving money.  I am buying food cheap," was her answer.  Grandmother could never get her friend to see that the beans were not a bargain.

Yes, we need to eat cheaply, but well.  I can not tell you how many times I have found a "good deal" only to have it be a waste of money.  This also applies to clothing.  I have a relative that use to chide me about how I shopped for clothing.  She would go to garage sales and buy older but stained or faded clothing.  She would brag about the great deal she got and went on about how spoiled I was making my children.  Until the day she found out that for the same amount she spent,  I got brand new clothing on clearance.  My clothing had to make it through more than one child and I had to be careful about the quality or else in a few years I would be buying it again.

I do not always try to find the cheapest deal, but the best. I  have had to learn the hard way that when shopping, you need to consider more than just the price. There is a very old saying that is sooooooo true, you get what you pay for.
