July 9, 2006 The First Injury
|
Yep, our
youth group has been gone for less than 48 hours and we have had a report that
Bud is the first on the trip to sustain an injury. After arriving safely
in Ontario last night, they were playing musical chairs, and my guy, in his
teenage boy exuberance ran and dived onto a chair, hurting his back (and I’m
guessing, a little of his pride.)
Praying that the ibuprofen is all that is needed to help him feel better
quickly, and that there is not a serious injury lurking there to hinder his
work for the LORD this week.

Well, all my babies left yesterday and I'm home alone at the moment. Hubby is on a bike ride, so it's just me and Gus, the stinky-at-the-moment puppy. My two oldest are on their way to Kingston, Ontario for and my two youngest are spending the week being spoiled by mammaw and pappaw. My
boys have gone to camp for several years now, but I actually had tears
in my eyes last night before saying goodbye to them. When they
started calling van assignments, Bubba's name was called in the
first group, Bud yelled out "Bye Bubba, I love you!" and of course, all
89 attendees and their parents started laughing and broke the tension,
so no tears flowed when I hugged them one last time. Thursday we went to the midnight showing of Pirates of the Caribbean.
All in all very entertaining (I didn't fall asleep!) except for the
creepy river woman. We got home at 3:30 am, and my internal clock
had me up by 6:30 (I do not use an alarm clock, but it is rare for me
to sleep past this time.) So, yesterday I was running on three
hours of sleep and lots of caffeine.
Bud has had some noticeable chin hair for several months now. We
have avoided the first "official" shave with a razor, but something
needed to be done about it. So, before he left yesterday, I got
out the ol trimmer and chopped it off. He turned 15
AND A HALF on the second (and yes that "half" is important to him as it
signals the time that he may go to get his temporary driving
permit.) But I am in no hurry for him to get a car or his
license. Let's see, he also has a girlfriend now,
Strawberry, who I will say is adorable and is a wonderful Christian
girl. They have been an item for over three months now. She
has joined us on family outings, and they sit together for church
activities, but we are not allowing dating just yet. But they
talk on the phone every night. He gave her a betta fish in a vase
for their three month anniversary. I cannot imagine how he is
going to top that gift, but my advice to him was that it wasn't about
how much time or money he spent, but the thought behind it. But, Oh my soul! Where has my baby gone to?
Bubba earned six merit badges at scout camp. He borrowed a phone
card from a fellow camper and tried to call me. I, of course
happened to be out at that time, so he left this message to me that was
just "heartbreaking" In the whiniest voice
possible...>>> "Mom, Where ARE you? Pick up the phone, this is not a telemarketer.
I miss you. You better be there next time I call." Of
course, he is a big ham, so I understood that he wasn't really
upset, but if anyone else had heard him...So, I spent about 30 minutes
trying to record the "perfect" answering machine greeting assuring him
(and my other two boys who were also at various camps) that I was SO sorry to miss their calls . And wouldn't ya know, he never tried to call back.
Boo went to church kids camp. He has a hard time matching his
clothes, normally putting on the first shirt and pants that he sees, so
he asked for help making certain that he had matching outfits. I
packed each days clothes in a Ziploc bag. A day or two after he
returned, he came down with red and black shorts on with a white shirt
trimmed in black. Honey Bunch says, "Boo, you look really good
today, you match." To which Boo replied, "I had an outfit left
over from camp." Hey, whatever works, right? Boo'ism: "I really want the nut of the litter," said when we were picking out a puppy.
Baby Girl'ism: "I want to go to BackOut (Outback) steak
house." She got her braces put on Wednesday morning.
She was left home with me while Honey Bunch and the boys were off to
camp. We got movies from the library and the video store, went to
see Over the Hedge,
ate at Ruby Tuesday's, Subway, and McDonald's, but she still said more
than once, "I'm bored". I'm sure she won't admit it, but she
really just missed picking at her brothers.

June 29, 2006 Time for a template change
|
Well,
what does it say about me that I've spent the better part of the
afternoon changing around my template and have no time to write an
update. You'd think I would have prioritized differently since
I've been absent from around here so long. Oh well, I would
promise to update tomorrow, but all of my men folk (hubby included)
return from camp, so my free time will diminish once again!

Here's
a picture of our new puppy. He's a Labradoodle--His mama was a
black poodle and his daddy was a chocolate lab. He's 13 weeks
old, but we've only had him for one week. We've never had a male
dog before, so please tell me that he'll behave. As for his name,
we're still unsure, but leaning towards GUS (for Augustus Caesar, or
the mouse, Gus-Gus in Cinderella, or if he's just a big goober, Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.) This guy's going to be big, but isn't he just a cutie!

June 28, 2006 Snake in the Pool
This
guy has been seen swimming around our pool. Then he (or she?)
hides in the skimmer, just out of reach. Baby girl refuses to
swim until this critter is caught but all the guys are away at camp
this week. Just for the record, he looks bigger in this photo, but I'm
not reaching in to get it out.

May 11, 2006 Just another quick update
Once again I
have left this blog neglected. It has been crazy around here
since we bought a 30 year old, 3500 sq foot house and have removed
wallpaper and painted almost every surface (including ceilings) while
trying to unpack boxes and make time for schooling.
I feel so blessed to have this house. Each of the children has
their own room and we have a separate school room and craft room!
We have birds at the feeder daily and have seen our share of cardinals,
robins, finches and blue jays. Of course we have also
seen mice and snakes in the shed...but don't tell Baby Girl!
We are trying to wind down for the school year and are awaiting the
arrival (hopefully any day now) of our IOWA tests. All in
all, I feel that this has been a good year, even with the interruption
of moving.
Summer camps start in just three weeks with our oldest, Bud, going to
Scout Leadership Camp (he was just elected Senior Patrol Leader), then
onto Youth Super Summer Leadership Camp. Bubba will go to Scout
camp, while Boo attends Church Kids' Camp. Then Bud and Bubba
will go to International M-Fuge--traveling this year to Canada!
Poor Baby Girl just gets to stay home with mom.
Our latest purchase was a drum set.
'nuff said on
that topic.....
And, that's my life in a nutshell for the moment.

December 8, 2005 Quick Update
November 16, 2005 Allowances
|
Today was
allowance day in our household. It was
supposed to be yesterday, on payday, but I never have cash in my wallet.
We have
gone back and forth between how much, or even if, we should give to our
children. We have come up with a
solution that works for our family. Our
children have chores because they are a member of our household. But, because they are a member of our
household they also receive and allowance based on their age.
Since the
older ones end up having more responsibilities, we did not feel that it was
fair that the little ones received the same amount, so we came up with the age
scale. They get one dollar for however
old they are on honey’s two pay periods per month to spend however they please…with
one exception….they must give some (we teach 10%) back to the LORD.
This has
greatly reduced the “can you buy me…” questions when we are in the store. They have to really want something, and be
willing to spend their own money on it.
They are learning the value of the dollar and that an impulse buy can
determine whether they have to wait an extra two weeks to get a bigger
purchase. At times they pool their money
to buy a video game. But most times they
save it and watch the sum grow larger in their wallets. And of course, they look forward to their “raise”
each year on their birthday!
Now, this
has been revised at times based on our family dynamics. For instance, when we had season tickets to
the amusement park and made a trip down there weekly, they did not receive their
allowances. We were spending way more
than their allotment each week to justify giving them more.
I guess I
had this on my mind today because Bubba just bought a new electric guitar
yesterday. He knows how much money he
will be receiving next week for his birthday from each of the grandparents and from us. However, he spent a little over and will still
owe us money, so today he didn’t receive his $11.00, but only $1.00 for his
tithe. He doesn't have any "fun money", but he will have that guitar for
a long time and the little trinkets he may have thought he wanted (or needed)
are not so high on the priority list.
Is
he happy with his purchase?
Absolutely.
But we’ll have to ask
him again in a few months!

November 14, 2005 Natural Consequences
|
Honey and I
are in a Bible Study for parents of teens and pre-teens. We have been talking about natural
consequences for wrong behavior.
So, we have
been trying a few in our household. For
instance, when our children leave their beds unmade, they will find that there
is no bedding on the mattress when they retire for the evening. (This one only occurred once and they have
all learned the lesson from it!) When my
teen (who, in his defense has always been on a night owl’s schedule) has not
made it into the school room by 9:00 am, having already eaten breakfast, then
he loses his IM and xanga time. (okay,
we’re still working on this one.) One of
the other moms is dealing with hateful names between her children. Her solution was for them to sit by the
aquarium while holding their tongues.
The reward for not name
calling for a week was to go out for ice cream.
She said that not one has broken the rule this week! Another mom was having trouble with her
daughter slamming a door. The solution?
She removed the door. Toys and
clothes left on the floor? Take them
away.
Okay, so
this is working! And why on earth I have
never tried it before, I’ll never know.
Our youth pastor has even given us a contract to sign with our children
about character behaviors that they need to work on. It’s right there on the contract what the
wrong behavior is and the punishment that will be given should that behavior
continue. Both the parents and the teens
sign it. So they know that there is a
consequence (either a bad one or a good one in the case of the ice cream) for
their behavior.

November 14, 2005 An Army of The One
|
Finally a
chance to update!
Well, so
much has happened in our household that I could not even begin to recap it all,
but will just talk about this past weekend.
Warning, long and rambling.
Our church youth
group was involved in a weekend missions project called Engage. The 137 students and adult workers served in
14 homes, and various charitable organizations around our community. Groups of teens were hosted in church families’
homes starting on Friday night. Saturday
morning, they returned to the church at 9:00 am for their work assignments,
which ranged from both the daytime and nighttime homeless shelters, the soup
kitchen, the women’s shelter, to the Catholic Social Services food pantry. In these places, the teens did everything
from sweeping, to packing canned goods, to picking up trash along the block, to
cleaning and scrubbing toilets and showers.
Other groups went to build a wheelchair ramp, rake leaves, clean
gutters, dust for elderly ladies, to painting.
It was time for them to serve someone else. As our youth pastor said, “it’s not about ME”
this weekend.
I dropped
our teen and pre-teen at the church at 7:00pm Friday for their worship
celebration. At 10:30pm, I
picked up five, seventh grade girls to be their “mom” for the weekend. So, I’m a mom of three boys and a seven year
old girl and I have nary a clue about middle school girls. I asked my boys what they would want their
host family to serve for breakfast and my oldest son said, “If you have girls, half
of them won’t eat anything, and the other half will eat enough for those who
didn’t.” So, I went and bought a fruit
tray and some hot chocolate, and the ingredients to make a breakfast
pizza. I asked the boys if I should buy
muffins, or make them. I am honored to
say that they said, “make them mom, yours are much better than the store
bought.” Okay, so chocolate chip muffins
it is. Food wise, I was ready and
willing.
However, no
one warned me that these girls would decide to stay up ‘til the wee hours of
the morning. We showed them the fridge
and where the snacks were and basically left them to help themselves. Honey and I heard them in the kitchen
whispering, “There’s nothing with caffeine in here.” (Yea! They
didn’t find that one case of soda with caffeine that we left in there.) Honey and I knew that they would want to stay
up late, so we were prepared for a one or two o’clock time frame. The girls were playing board games and
talking and being very good. So, we went
ahead and went to bed around 1:30 with the instructions to “not stay up too
late.” Now, these ladies were in the
lower level where our boys sleep, and honestly, we cannot hear a thing down
there from our bedroom. So, we of course
didn’t hear the screams (they asked us) or the squeals or the water running, or
anything else that they did until 4:00 am (when they said they finally went to sleep.)
Now, we do know that there was shaving cream involved in there somehow
for the first girl asleep, but no computer surfing (we have those upstairs next
to our bedroom) and no TV (we have it locked for not turning on after a 11:00
pm.)
At
breakfast, several of them, said, “no thanks” to eating until I said that they
wouldn’t be eating lunch until after 12:30.
They politely put food on their plates and had girl talk around the
table. When I gave them the “five
minutes until we leave warning” they all got up…but not to go brush their
teeth, but to re-fill their plates (okay, so my son pegged that one.) We arrived at the church within their
allotted time frame (but not at the designated 9:00 am) So, I really wanted to
volunteer in one of the places after sitting in on part of the worship service
on Friday night, but to be honest, at that point, I could already tell that I would
not be functioning well. So, I went home
and hubby soon hit the bed for a nap and I baked brownies to take back to the
church for the 5:30 lasagna dinner. At
this point, I fed my other two lunch, and since my eyes were not wanting to
stay open decided to lay down and take a nap.
(I was determined that I would not go to sleep before the girls again!) When I woke up, I mentioned to hubby that we
were just not getting much done today, and he looked at me and promptly went
back to bed for a second nap!
We had to
have the lasagna, bread and brownies at the church by 5:30, so decided to just
eat out for dinner with another family.
I returned to the church to pick up “my girls” at 10:15 and my poor
Bubba was sitting there eating his pizza and looking like he could fall asleep
in his plate. Fortunately the girls were
also looking more tired than the night before.
(And yes, this time we did hide the caffeinated soda.) On the way home
the one girl who had gotten the worst of the shaving cream was begging them to
leave her alone tonight. And there was talk of “revenge” if you get me back. (Okay, I’m not going into the whole “social”
atmosphere, but just thinking how sad to be the odd one out.) I did remind them that my house was a rental
and that I would appreciate it if they didn’t use the shaving cream again. And, “why is it okay to do something to one
person, but not be able to take what they do back to you without saying you’ll
get revenge?” (Okay, mommy hat on there)
By 12:30 we knew that at least two of them were asleep and the lights were
out. However, we heard some water
running and thought it best to at least stay up a little while longer. I finally had to go to bed around 2:00, but
honey stayed up watching a war movie until 2:30 and all was quite on the home
front.
Sunday
morning, I didn’t wake up as early as I wanted and scrambled to get the muffins
in the oven (blueberry this time) and mix up the pancake batter. I hurried to wake hubby to have him get in
the shower ahead of the girls and that he was going to have to be the head chef
for the pancakes. Noted to the girls, “Make
sure you marry a man who feels comfortable in the kitchen.” So the story from the night before was one of
markers (washable, thank goodness; hence the reason we heard the water running)
but a longer night’s sleep. (Note to
self…the chocolate chip muffins were a hit, the blueberry were not.)
It was so nice
to have my boys back Sunday afternoon and it was a wonderful worship
celebration Sunday evening to see the video from all of their hard work. It was amazing to hear the girls and my boys
talk about the sites where they worked and how they felt, knowing that they had
made a difference this weekend in someone’s life.
Teens
praying over the beds that would be occupied by some homeless man or woman or
child that very night—convicting
Homeless
men waiting outside the shelter until the time that they could go in—tearful
A woman who
could leave her house without someone carrying her wheelchair—joyful
An elderly
man whose leaves were knee high in his yard—caring
Lost hours
of sleep? Who’s counting?
It’s “not about ME” it’s about Him.

November 14, 2005 Virus free!
|
Well, my
laptop is now virus clean thanks to spy sweeper. We’ve always relied on Norton AV and although
it found the virus, it could not clean it.
I have now multi-layered my internet protection and hope that it won’t
happen again in the near (and not so near) future.

November 4, 2005 no one ever comments on your blog, mom
Just
haven't had the time, nor the gumption to post lately. My laptop
has a yucky bug, and trying to share the desktop with a teen and a
pre-teen doing foreign language, grammar, math and science (and a princess also attempting German) on the desktop has cut my time down to not much.
Lots of other things going on around the homestead, and I'm trying to
stay focused on my job as wife and mother and keeper of the home.
And if you read my comments section, don't assume they are from anyone
but my wonderfully clever teen who thinks mom is depressed cuz "no one ever comments on your blog mom and I have 16 on mine!" Okay, so xanga has the blog ring and he pretty much has friends now... and he chats online for like two hours everyday... and he's got skills, like blogging skills... and template changing skills.... and he's got my back and everything... and, well I better stop now...

October 26, 2005 Brr...it's cold outside
|
Brr…it’s cold outside today…and I’m not ready! Yes, I knew it was coming. But I’ve lived in the desert for the past
five years and was not prepared for how quickly it would arrive here. I should have known better. I grew up in KY and have lived (survived?)
two years in a North Dakota winter—weather so cold your nose hairs freeze. So, it is my own fault for the scrambling I
must do to get my family and myself ready.
We have a closet full of assorted jackets and sweaters, but
Boo and I are the only ones in the family with a true winter coat (thanks to
the winter in ND.) So yesterday, I
was online shopping for coats for Baby Girl and Bubba. LLBean has free shipping right now and there
were coats in their sizes on sale!
Honey also ordered a coat online—last year’s color, but at a 60%
discount. (Bud has decided to acquire an old military jacket of honey’s)
The younger two boys have plenty of jeans (thanks to hand me
downs.) But today I must make the trek
to the mall (a place I rarely go) to look for jeans (and a hoodie) for
Bud. The boy has suddenly sprouted into
man-size and his arms and legs just don’t fit into the boy’s section any
longer. The problem however, is that
he just does not like shopping. (He
takes after me!) In addition, since he
has been working this fall as a soccer referee, he has become more aware of the
value of the dollar and thinks that everything is overpriced.
So, last night we stopped at Kohl’s on the way home from his
youth Bible study to look at the hoodies there. He found one that he liked, but had a problem with it being twice
as much as a lesser quality one. Now, I
have to be honest in saying that I have probably over-programmed him to think
that everything we buy must be heavily discounted. However, I have found that it is just as
important to buy something of quality, and something they like, rather
than buying it just because it is cheaper, or on sale. Many times I’ve found that “bargain”, only
to get it home and have it hang in the closet with the tags still on until it
is outgrown (as evidenced by the two pairs of on-sale jeans I just pulled out
of Bubba’s closet that he never wore—guess what Boo, you have NEW jeans!) So I would rather spend a few extra dollars
and get something they will wear and enjoy instead of something that gets
pushed to the back of the closet. Alas,
we walked out of the store without either one.
A true bargain in my opinion is the $60 pair of shoes in my
closet that I have had and worn for over 13 years, not the $7.00 sale pair that
haven’t been on my feet since I walked out of the store with them two years
ago. A true bargain is the pricey coat
I couldn’t see spending my money on 11 years ago in ND that still looks brand
new (and will be worn) today!

October 20, 2005 Mommy, I think I have a fever...
October 15, 2005 No, I'm a tiger
If you happen to know me in "real life" you would know that I don't like for my children to call one another names, but this one was funny and I couldn't resist sharing...
Baby Girl stuck her tongue out at Bud (I'm sure he gave her a good reason) and he says to her, "You're a rat."
To which she calmly replies, "No, I'm a tiger."
Ahem....
guess who ate at the Chinese Buffet tonight and read the placemat? |
