Family Bike Ride

Posted in Tandem Tales

Honey Bunch is on leave for a few days, so today we decided to go on a family bike ride.

Now, we’ve only gone on a family ride once before with a rented tandem and none since we’ve made our purchase.  Our last ride of about 10 miles was several months ago and baby girl had to be bribed with promises of “as much ice cream as she could eat” to make it the last few miles.  Since that time, she has received a larger bike for her birthday with gears to shift, and she was so excited to start our ride.

At least for the first two miles.

We hadn’t gotten very far into the ride when the complaining started.

My feet hurt.

I’m thirsty.

Can we turn around now?

Well, it’s not as bad as it sounds.  She really is a little powerhouse on the bike.  When she had just turned four, she asked for her training wheels to be taken off.  I said, “go ask your dad,” thinking that he would say “no.”  Well, she has been on the go ever since.  But I will admit that riding on the trail is not quite as exciting as tooling around the neighborhood.

When we reached the 5 and a half mile mark, we decided to turn around.  I mentioned to Honey that “maybe we should let Bubba try to ride on the back of the tandem and I’ll ride his bike and go slower with Baby Girl.”  Of course, there’s a little bit of a learning curve on being the stoker (rider in the bike), but we found that this ended up being the best for everyone.  Bubba, unlike older brother Bud, had complete confidence in his dad’s ability to keep the bike upright.

The boys were able to ride on ahead of us (but not too far) and Baby Girl felt that she could go at her own pace.  She didn’t go any slower than before, nor did she go much faster, but having me ride beside her helped her gain confidence that she could do it.

On the spur of the moment, Bubba asked if we could take a picnic lunch.  Well, we had finished the last of the bread this morning making french toast, but we did have crackers.  There was plenty of salami, ham and cheese, plums, pretzels and I even had some hostess cupcakes for dessert!  I’m ever the planner, so this impromptu lunch was not what I would have normally put together, but it ended up being so much better and easier, and of course, less stressful.  What a great idea, and one I wish I had thought of myself.  Thanks Bubba for the great idea!  We stopped at a state park for our picnic, had a few moments to rest, then checked out a local site on our way back to the car.

We didn’t try to rush our trip, but just took it slow and steady.  And now Baby Girl can add 11 more miles to her accomplishments.

Way to go!

Today's Tandem Tale

Posted in Tandem Tales

Today honey bunch and I decided to try a new bike path that goes by the river.   It was overcast, with a few sprinkles here and there, but overall a nice ride of 22 miles.    We're preparing for a tandem tour this weekend with rides on Saturday and Sunday of 50 to 80 miles in length.  I'm not sure I'm ready for it, but honey assures me that we can take it slow and steady.

Tomorrow is my b-day and my gift from my parents is a pair of bike shoes.  Yesterday we visited five bike stores looking for the right shoes for me.  I have a WIDE foot, so the length is always too long to have it comfortable across the top for me.  I wasn't quite sure how they are supposed to feel, and I tried on so many shoes that by the end of day I was so confused.  When I finally settled on a pair, we realized that they were only available at the first place we had visited, over 25 miles away.  Well, needless to say, I do not have a new pair of shoes.

Anyway, our total riding miles since we bought the bike is five rides and over 100 miles!

My View from the Back of the Bike

Posted in Tandem Tales

My honey bunch came home from Iraq in the Spring of 2004 and bought a bike.

Not just an all ready assembled, department store bargain:  An expensive bike.

And he rode.

And rode.

 And...

I got a little bit jealous of his time away

Yes, I've said it.  I didn't like him leaving on Saturday morning to ride with someone else.  I knew that he enjoyed it, that he needed the exercise, that it was a good thing for him.  But I still felt left out.

I didn't care to train for the El Tour de Tucson; no, riding 109 miles is not my idea of fun, but I did want to enjoy his sport with him.  So, when we moved to our new location I started thinking about getting a bike of my own.  I soon realized, however, that my skills (and yes, I’ve got skills for all of the Napoleon Dynamite fans out there) in cycling were sorely lacking.   But I found an interesting article about tandem cycling and mentioned it to my honey.  Well, that’s all it took and he started the research process.  We even went and rented an ancient model because I wanted to make sure he would enjoy the ride—remember, he’s an expert rider now.

Well, despite the experience of the rental, we did enjoy it.  And, most importantly, we could ride two-gether!

So, we are now the proud owners of a Cannondale Road Tandem.

Although we have had several mishaps along the way, (stories for another day!) I am so enjoying our time on the bike. We are able to talk freely about the day, or the children, or the finances; or just enjoy the surroundings.  We have seen many birds and other wildlife and have enjoyed the cafes along the way.  It’s a chance for us to reconnect and refresh our marriage.

It’s an interesting experience—We have learned to communicate in a new way; I must allow him to steer for both of us, to set the pace, and to watch for hazards—encompassing all of what I feel mimics accurately what the Bible teaches me about being a wife.

So many people get caught up on verse 22 in Ephesians 5:

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.”

But I treasure verses 25-28:

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it…He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

Both of us can’t steer the bike—one has to make the decision or we wreck.

My safety is in his hands—I’m going to let him steer because he loves me and is going to make certain that I am safe.   It’s a lesson I need daily, but one that I know for certain will keep our marriage strong.
