Sep. 22, 2006 - Look at these great books!

Our library has a little shelf right by the checkout desk in the children's section where the librarian usually puts books that fit a certain theme, like holidays, sports, etc.  This week as we were checking out books, both my son and I noticed several books on the little shelf that we really liked...I pointed out several I thought were really good, and he grabbed Anastasia Krupnik (He already read another book about Anastasia's little brother, Sam)  We were at the library with a friend from church, and she pointed out James and the Giant Peach, one of her favorites.  As we happily chatted about our favorite books, I noticed the "theme"...Banned Books! OOPS!  All the books on the shelf had been challenged or banned!

I let MBB check the book out anyway, since I don't remember anything in it that was too terrible.  Guess we'll have some interesting discussions on why some books get banned (Some of the books on the list are no brainers....I'd never let MBB read them ....but many of them are my old favorites...Wrinkle In Time, Bridge to Terebithia, Huck Finn....)

A Wrinkle in Time and Huck Finn were banned? I wonder exactly why....

Thanks for your comment! I'm fairly anti-social myself. It's something my husband wants me to "get over," but it's difficult. I know I probably need to get out more, though. But online communities are much less stressful. :) And such a wide variety of people! I'm just so glad that homeschooling is more acceptable in so many more ways than it was years ago. If I had to deal with pressures of decades past, my son probably would have ended up in public school — to his detriment, I'm sure.

The church side of things is...well, can be a bit rough around here. I live in part of the "Bible Belt." We can't even have metal music stations down here. One emerged about 12 years ago, but was brought down by religious establishment. I think things may have lightened up a tiny bit since then, but people take church (way too) seriously around here.

I was just reading through some of your entries. I really liked the 9/19 one. :D Your kids sound great! And I hate those on-the-spot questions, too. I totally go blank. I have an answer, it's within me, but it hides away until the stress is off. I wish I could think straight more often. :) But I think moms, especially homeschooling moms, should have a pass on that.

Wow, it's after 1am! 8-O I'm gonna add you to my friends before I turn in. So, later!
