Back to School Shopping
It's that time of year again. The papers are full of Back To School ads. All the local schools started last week or this week. The neighborhood kids proudly showed us their new shirts and shoes and discussed the merits of different backpacks. We have one more week until we'll start school. The weather here doesn't really change until October, so I don't buy new clothes until then. My daughter has gone through at least three different sizes of shoes over the summer, so I don't plan on buying any back-to-school shoes right now. I remember how fun it was to go pick out outfits with my mom and sisters before school started. I was feeling a little sad that my daughter won't have quite the same excitement of waiting to wear that special outfit to school.
We homeschool through a charter school. Over the summer I have been compiling a list of books we'll use. I was getting the list together over the weekend so I can put in my order next week and showed my kids some of the books we'll be using. They've been listening to Pippi Longstocking on cd's the past few weeks, so I thought maybe we would start out with some Pippi Longstocking for the first week or two. My daughter was so excited...she didn't even want me to order the book through school. She wants her very own copy, because "Pippi is just like Paddington Bear...she has so many great adventures, and I want the book for my very own." She discovered a Read Aloud book with excerpts from different books today and was excitedly showing it to her neighbor friend today at lunch. "Look! There is Charlotte's Web, and Dr. Dolittle and even Wizard of Oz!" Her friend looked blankly at the book until she heard "Wizard of Oz" and then said "Oh, like Wizards of Waverly Place?" My daughter tried a few more times to find stories her friend would recognize. "Don't you know Paddington Bear?!" but they had to settle for discussing TV shows her friend watches.
I think I've figured out what Back to School Shopping I'll do this year. I'll order that copy of Pippi Longstocking and my daughter can wait excitedly to read it for the first day of school. |
