Poetic Maiden has won The Weird Blog's Contest #2! Here is her amazing short story:
Shattered Night - by Cherise A.
Elian perched high in a tree above the falls, contemplating his struggle and the choice that lay before him. If only life were not so cruel, forcing him to choose between the maiden he loved, girl that he was betrothed to.
The stillness of the night was broken by a clear, pure voice: the last voice he wanted to hear at this moment.
Elian jumped, caught unawares, and fell from his hiding place. However, he reached for a nearby branch out of his elven instinct, and looped gracefully into a soft landing on the ground.
“Nihmiwaye!” he called into the woods. “You scared – you startled me!”
Nihmiwaye emerged from behind a tree, the clear moonlight shining on her pale nymph face. She looked directly into Elian’s eyes. Elian felt himself melting under her gaze.
“What is it you want?” he asked, turning his eyes away from her.
Nihmiwaye continued to stare at him, and he felt his face grow hot.
“There were two humans that passed through Aenywroe and entered into Raendolin,” she said. “A man and young woman.”
“Yes,” said Elian. “It is as you say.”
Nihmiwaye’s silence was unbearable to Elian, and he wished she would speak faster and stop staring at him.
“Elian,” she said. “Why is it you think ill of me?” Her voice was like the voice of a young girl, light and innocent, yet behind it there was a will that would not be moved.
Elian hadn’t noticed before that he was bent over under the weight of Nihmiwaye’s gaze, and he tried to straighten and face her.
“I…” He didn’t know how to respond. He was used to always being on top of a situation, and he hated this feeling of weakness.
Nihmiwaye came up and touched his face with her delicate hand. He flinched at her touch, icy cold upon his face, and she withdrew.
“Why can’t things be as they were before?” she asked him. “Why must we be separated? Why can’t you trust me?”
Elian longed to run to her and take her in his arms and tell her that he loved her, but he could not. “What is it you came to speak to me about?” he muttered quietly.
Nihmiwaye took a step back from him, and he could feel her pain and her hatred, even though he was not looking at her.
“The human girl,” she said, her voice hard as steel, “is under the protection of my queen. You are not allowed to do any harm to her.”
“Byerron is a dear friend of Anwyr,” said Elian. “My lord will not allow any harm to come to them. You have my word of honor.”
Nihmiwaye stood there, silent, and once more Elian wished with all his heart that she would speak. He knew that the errand from her queen was not the only reason she had come.
“Elian!” she cried, and the pain and heartache in her voice hit Elian like a mighty wave of the ocean, making him fall to the ground. His heart wrenched at tore at the sound, and he screamed her name. He leapt to his feet, determined to pursue her, to take back every word of unfaithfulness he had ever spoken to her.
She was gone.
Elian fell to his knees and wept.
