Memorization: Bible Verses

I am still not quite done with our school plans and have been finishing up some last minute things.

I now have (as of last night) ALL of my maps copied & ready to go. That was a much bigger job than I'd thought. I pulled what I thought was the best from my pool of Knowledge Quest maps, Story of the World activity book (I wish they made reproducibles CD's), Mystery of History reproducibles CD, and online maps. I wrote down map & page numbers from my pool of atlases (2 biblical atlases, 1 historical & 1 modern day) that I thought would be the best help for that particular activity.

I also have all of our timeline figures (set by Homeschool in the Woods) printed on full sheet labels and filed under the week we will need them in my binder.

Another thing I've accomplished is completely organizing the children's toys. Again. We can now close their toybox and I have all of their toys sorted: Lincoln Logs, Legos, Tinker Toys, blocks, colored blocks, wooden train set, lacing cards/laces, lacing beads, Playdoh/accessories, Mr. Potato Head and his parts, almost all puzzles now have their missing pieces, dress up/play clothes, Leap Frog cash register/shopping cart pieces are happily together again, Little People Noah's Ark/Nativity/Barn are in their proper spots, shape sorters/stackers, musical instruments, plastic animals, Bristle Blocks, puppets, play kitchen items are all back where they should be. I have a few sets of shelves with plasic tubs full of these things. The rest of the toys that fall in the "other" category are in their toybox (cars, etc.). What does this have to do with planning for school? Josiah! He needs something to do as he will be without a playmate during school hours. He absolutely LOVES puzzles and I have TONS of 'em! Most of them are made of wood and are of varying ability. Those will keep him busy and the rest of the stuff we'll rotate through. Now if we could just keep it this way.... Ha!

Last night I went through and scheduled out the Bible verses I'd like my children to learn this year. I tried to make them go with what we're learning for the week. In some weeks, it's more the music that goes with the theme than the words- especially the songs from All Nations (ex: track 10: China). In some weeks they don't really go at all, but it's an important verse to learn.

For example, the week we read about David & Goliath, we'll be memorizing 1 Samuel 17:45-47. Same with Joseph- Genesis 50:20. Our first & last weeks I like to keep light, so to kick off our "Creation to Christ (resurrection)" studies, we'll be learning Genesis 1:1 the first week and John 3:16 the last.

And in some weeks I chose a verse that we would be reading in the Bible that week.

I don't know about you, but I (and my children) am an auditory learner when it comes to memorization. I have all of the Harrow Family CD's used in Sonlight's bible curriculum and love those. I can probably recite every single verse from K, even though the last time we used it was when Gracie was in K (we did something different with Gabe last year). Aren't you proud of me? Tee-hee. A- All have sinned...; B- Believe in the Lord Jesus....; C- Children obey your parents....; D- Do to others..., etc.

So we will be using those, along with the Seeds Family Worship CD's. Every verse we will be memorizing has a song to go with it. It took me a couple of hours last night, but I burned a couple of MP3 discs with the songs in order by the week we learn it. I even repeated the songs that which they have 2 weeks to learn so that the track number goes with what week we're in to make it easier to find. Now I've just got to plug them into our schedule somewhere.

If you'd like to see my lists, I have them uploaded in Microsoft Word. They're in order by week # and next to the reference, I listed the CD they're pulled from & its track number. I purchased the Seed's CD's from Christianbook.com. (they have samples on their website)
Here's the list for my K & PreK students: CLICK HERE.
And here is the list for my 3rd & 5th graders: CLICK HERE.

I cannot believe how much time this has taken! I STILL don't feel like I've had a summer break (and I could talk about the weather here too, but I'll spare you- for today anyway) and here we're officially starting school in a few weeks! Argh!

I am so jealous! You did all this and took care of 5 kids and a puppy?

I am started on my lesson plans for the year but they are not nearly as detailed and not nearly as close to being done.

We are scheduled to start school on Monday but I won't be ready. I'll never be ready so we will start, 'ready or not'.

Thanks for stopping by. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I don't know how you keep up with so many comments. I have a fraction of the blog friends and still always seem to be behind.

I wonder if that timeline you mentioned would work with Konos. Hmmm... might have to check into that one!
I dont know what my learning style is... I would like to evaluate that this year for the kiddos. Any tips there? You were talking about memorization and it seems that for me, if its set to music, I remember it. Such as the "Hide them in your heart" Jeff Green CD's. "In my father's house are... many mansions. Many mansions in my father's house!" but I have a hard time remembering the reference. Numbers are completely difficult. I hardly ever remember phone numbers and I mix the numbers all up like I have digit dyslexia. I remembered how to count as a child because of that Electric Company song (one two three FOUR five, six seven eight NINE ten... ELEVEN twelve! Doo doo doo do do do....").
But we all knew I was weird before this amazing revelation!

This is a wonderful post - you have given us a WEALTH of information. Thank you! I will have to print this post out so I can follow up with all of your recomendations. Especially the Bible memorization stuff. And I AM impressed!!! That is so important. I have been good about teaching the Bible and making it a priority, BUT I have not been good about memorization, with the exception of my 12 year old, I have him on a special program that is different than everyone else.

I love that timeline, too.

Toys...I used to do just what you did - taking the time to totally organize all the toys in separate boxes. I don't know about your family, but it never lasted long in my house. Then I'd be giving another entire day to this process.

Rachel would help me with this...I think it was totally good for her because she learned organization and I can see now that she seems to have a gift for this. I secretly like to think that this gift came from that time we spent together sorting toys and putting them away.

However...finally...Rachel and I had enough. We went through the toys (when the kids weren't looking) and we threw TONS and TONS of stuff and toys into big black bags. Rachel was instrumental in telling me what toys they would miss and what ones they wouldn't. Then I put them all in the back closet.(Embarrasing moment: my son's fiance seen all of these big plastic black bags piled high in my closet and she thought that was all my garbage being stored!!!)

After it was evident that no-one was crying over a missing toy, they went into my son's pickup truck. The bed was totally full and piled sky high with big black garbage bags. We sent them all to my mom to either keep some at her house (for kids to play with) or for her to give to Good Will.

I can't tell you how much that one decision (to get rid of all these toys) has made my life better! I've never spent an entire day de-cluttering and organizing toys again. It's like a big heavy cloud that got lifted off my shoulders.
