Why We Homeschool, Issue # 2

4. Moments like this.
(and where else are you allowed to go to school dressed in a floral print shirt with striped pants and bare feet and have your classmates still adore you?)

5. Because he has the time to explore his many interests (the current being gardening), your curious 10 year old son can get things to grow way better than you ever could.
(and grows things you'd never think of growing)

Can you tell by the leaves what kind of plant this is? No? Scroll down.

Don't worry, I would never be able to identify it. Here's a root view (pun intended) with a bit of a hint (as if *having* a root view isn't any sort of hint). Can you tell now? If so, pat yourself on the back. If not, now see if you can figure it out. Scroll down.

Here's the whole plant. Now I'm sure you've guessed correctly.

A yam. A beautiful, glorious yam. Growing in my kitchen. Now what do we do with it?! I should just ask Alek...

You are already a pro at using pictures! Hopefully I'll learn!

We use the Weaver curriculum - Biblically based unit study.

OK, I missed #s 1-3 somewhere. I thought I was doing well at keeping up on your blog... I'll have to go look for them again. Beautiful pic of Millie & Josiah. And Alek's sweet potato is great!

OK, I'm back to edit. I clicked on the category title and found #1-3. From way back in April!- no wonder I didn't remember!

I was going to guess Sweet Potato--very close! We grew some last year, and I recognized the leaf shape. Lovely just for the leaves, they are.

I really enjoyed the Mutton-Bustin'! I have never seen the likes of it! LOL

And the piglets definitely fit the "so ugly they're cute" category.

Have a great weekend. Looking forward to some photo tips.

Hey, did you get sun this afternoon? After a gloomy morning, I took a shower after lunch and when I emerged, the blue sky and warm sun took my breath away! I hope it reached you, too. And it was warm until, like, 6:30, what a blessing! Unfortunately, we couldn't get out much today, all my kids have colds. But we sat on the deck and enjoyed the warmth.

Photo #4 is precious. And interesting. Is that done with a special lens or was the sun just right that day? (When isn't the sun right, I'm asking myself!) I love that root photo, too. We've got an avocado seed sprouting on our window sill. I love this kind of thing. So basic but fascinating. New life from a cast off. I just tried roasting sweet potato wedges last night, should have saved an "eye" to plant. As usual, your photos are stellar!

Have a terrific weekend!
Kate

Oh, I just love your homeschool moments in photos. I remember the one you sent to SL of your son reading in the swing. Such great moments are kids can have learning at home. I sent you an email about your meat packing plant question, since it was kind of long.

Thanks ladies!

Kate, no special lens, just the sun from the kitchen window! :)

May. 19, 2008 - Love the idea!

Is it as simple as putting a yam (or sweet potato) in a jar of water? Do you cut or pierce the end in the water? I'll bet the kids would love this idea.
