Home Makeover: The Boys' Room

We didn't do a whole lot to the boys' room because I really like it the way it is. However, we had the same problem as in the girls' room. Gabriel was 3 or so when we put up the border in their room. We (not-very-smartly) put the border near the center of the wall to separate the blue "water" color from the light blue "sky" on the top. It looked SUPER cute.... until he started tearing bits of it down. I think we have learned our lesson about wallpaper/borders- fa-get about 'em!

Their border was pretty easy to take down- not only because it wasn't very wide, so there wasn't as much of it like in the girls' room, but it just came down easier. We got most of it, except for the glue backing part, off by just pulling on it. In the girls' room we had to use DIF gel, a scoring tool, scrapers, warm water and lots of manual scrubbing and peeling. In the boys' room, we only had to resort to DIF and scoring after we got the front part off.

So Kenton did this room by himself. He decided to use a stencil to paint waves where the border had been. It turned out pretty cute! He touched up the rest of the paint and his part was done.

Now Josiah HAD a crib in the boys' room until one day, somebody decided to take it apart. It was kind of falling apart anyway (after only 2 children! We bought it NEW for Millie when we moved here!) so we just took the rest of it apart & took it to the dump. So he was bedless for a while. Well, kind of. He sleeps with Gabe most of the time. Gabe's his buddy and his protector and he feels safe with Gabe. And Gabe doesn't mind- he loves his little brother more than anything. Seriously. Their bond is pretty sweet.

However, since we figured the poor child would eventually need a bed to call his own, we decided to borrow the trundle from my parents' day bed. Well, actually, it's OUR day bed, but they're storing it for us since we don't have room for it. They weren't using the trundle and didn't even have a mattress for it so they didn't mind. So during the day, Josiah's bed lives under the bunk beds and pops out and up at night. Not by itself, of course. Although even though he starts out in his own bed, he always ends up with Gabe. Which is fine with me because it's either Gabe or us. ;)

Anyway, their previous bed spreads were literally falling apart. I found some comforters online that give a little color to their room- they're red. But they're reversible too, so if they decided they're in a blue mood, they can flip them to the other side. Another nice thing about these comforters is that they are made  for bunk beds! The end is fitted like a fitted sheet at the foot so that it stays tucked and they are shorter and not as wide as a normal twin comforter. Makes for making beds much easier and it looks neater! But the new comforters, sheets, the touched up paint and waves instead of a border and adding a trundle for Josiah are the only changes we made to their room.

I actually did take pictures of the boys' room after it was done the first time. Here's Kenton doing some final touching up the first time around (in 2005):

We sponge-painted the clouds on the wall. I thought they turned out pretty good! I liked their border because it added some color to their walls and broke up the blues a bit. However, it didn't stay that nice for very long, and a torn up border is not very nice looking.

Here's their north facing window. That dresser is Gabe's and some of Josiah's stuff is in it too- the rest of Josiah's clothes are in one of the dressers in our room- the one that is acting as a changing table. It's a wreck right now. The door is broken off & it's just falling apart. It will be going to the junk yard once we get their new dressers. It's on the opposite wall now and that little table isn't in their room anymore either- their fish tank is sitting on their book case now.

East wall, Their bunk beds and treasure chest toy box.

Their south wall. That big clunky dresser is against this wall now and the book case is on the wall next to the closet, with the fish tank on top. Alek's dresser is in the closet.

Now I'm not sure you will see any sort of improvement in the following pictures. Change yes, but improvement, no. But that's only because the previous pictures showed how the room looked after it was freshly done the last time- and like I said, I liked that border! And the bedspreads are still new and intact and stain-free.

Anyhow, here are the pictures of their touched up room.

Their bunk beds- and obviously the boys had made their beds that day and I didn't touch them up for the photos. LOL! You can barely see Josiah's trundle under the bottom bunk.

You can see the waves better in this one:

Another view of the bunks:

I didn't take a pic of the south wall because of the dresser situation. It's not a pretty sight!

And that completes the boys' room! Stay tuned tomorrow, when we make over the children's bathroom! The paint choices were a bit shocking at first but I really like how it turned out!

I've been playing catch up (or trying to). I really like the waves! And what a pretty pink for your daughters (I hear girls like pink!!!). And I must say congratulations on your daughter. Boy-girl patterns are so very convenient-are they not? (big smile)
I think Julianna would be a lovely name.

Fun room, and I like the girls' room, too-- it is beautiful! Good for you & your hubby, using your creative gifts to make your house a home. I regret not having taking the time to have more fun with my kids' rooms when they were little, even tho I always wanted to. Since we had to redo Fuzz' new room in this house, i decided this was my last chance and I took it! She is *almost* too old for a "kid" room-- but not quite! We (she & I) did an outdoor/jungly theme; she moved in a couple mos ago and loves it. I plan to post pics when we have the last little details done. (Knowing us, that will be in about 2011, and shortly thereafter, she'll decide she's too old for the decor. :-) No, actually, I have a goal to get it entirely finished before summer hits.)

btw, you once asked me whether my hubby happened to design/make kids' bedroom furniture. He actually used to do it for a living from 1997-99-- we had our own company and sold to stores in 5 different midwest states. He had a niche and people loved his stuff- but it grew too fast and crashed. Our kids still have bunkbeds & dressers from that company. But he likes to custom-make stuff as we redo their rooms (he did an outdoorsy/tree-ish loft for Fuzz' new room), and then we have the old stuff sitting around taking up space bc we don't want to get rid of it! Altho one dresser is being put to good use in our schoolroom and another as a TV stand...

Thanks ladies!

BJ- do post pics of your DD's room- I bet it's cute! That's really neat your hubby can do that type of thing! Is he upset about his business? Or happy to be done with it?

Love, Alyssa
