Death Of A Girlie-Girl? (be warned- not for the weak stomached)

Posted in PhotoBlogging
Gracie loves pink. She loves dresses. She loves tights and bows and fancy shoes. She will sometimes come downstairs to begin homeschool in her Sunday finest, complete with all of the above. She loves princesses, ballet and playing house. She loves babies and great grandmas and everyone in between. She loves snuggling and hugs and kisses and praying for people.

So I was surprised, to say the least, when Gracie ran in to show me the treasures she found in our yard yesterday. Normally, it would be a pretty rock or a freshly picked flower. Not yesterday. Nope.

To my surprise, this is what she presented me with:

A big fat earthworm.

And Millie had to share her worm with me too. At first I thought it was a maggot. But we don't have flies around here. Not until summer anyway, and even then, we don't see much of them. So it must be an earthworm in its pupal or larval stage or something.

Yes, those are my GIRLS' hands. Did you notice Gracie's fingernails? If not, check out this next one. Nasty.

I hope none of you have just eaten. I couldn't finish my breakfast after I pulled these photos off my memory card and took a peek at them.

Now this hand belongs to my 12 year old niece, who'd spent the previous night with us. She was showing me the vast collection of earthworms they'd acquired. Yes, she helped too.

After these pictures were taken, Gracie had to come in and get cleaned up. For what? It was time for ballet. Yes, from pulling slimy worms out of the ground to gracefully performing chasse arabesques in a tutu and ballet slippers across the dance floor, in the matter of an hour.

And I don't think I even want to know what *that* is.

I think I want my girlie-girl back. Maybe this was just a glitch. I hope.

My little one still shreeks (sp??) at the sight of a bug or anything gross. Just today in the grocery store she gave a dead bug about a 10 foot birth all the time talking about how yucky it was. That's my girl!!!!!!!!

Ya know, a few weeks ago when I was doing our gardening unit at school, I bought a box of nightcrawlers (earthworms) & the class and I played with them for several days. Loved it! They're really not slimy or anything. But then again, I'm a bit of a tomboy myself.

Alyssa,
I am so sorry about the loss of the girlie girl, I hope it is not Ambers fault. This is a very common scenerio at our house. But we are lucky if it is only an earthworm. I hope that Gracie has not been tainted by the tomboy in my Doodle"bug".

Hi Alyssa,
I came by yesterday to say hi but then got called away to pizza before I could leave a comment. I'm with you on wanting to keep our little girls girlie (and I'm sure she cleaned up beautifully!)
Ruthie is my little girlie girl, and for the longest time the only thing she would wear is dresses and skirts. She just started wearing bluejean capris - it's certainly not the end of the world :) but I keep thinking like you are, I hope this is a phase and the girlie girl in her stays.

I remember the first time my girls went through this kind of thing. It has it's moments of fun, but it is wild! Your girlie-girl is still in there somewhere. This will be great practice for getting past things like baby diapers in her future, or a house full of children with the stomach flu...it will pass, but it is great knowledge regardless. What fun!! And how awesome that they would just check it all and not even stop at the first one, but keep going! You are raising a great little bunch. Hugs!

hi....I was just laughing at your Gracie! She reminds me of my 10 yr old viviana in being a girly-girl! But I don't think Viviana would even touch a worm! It was nice visiting your blog! God Bless! juliet

I think it's great that your girls can go out and get dirty but also keep their girly side too with ballet, dress up, etc. Shows that they love to explore and learn about the world around them. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the good job you are doing as their homeschool mom Alyssa!

Wow! I always wished my daughter was more girly but doing that kind of stuff is her typical personality. Cute pictures

That is so funny that your kids hunted earthworms too. My girls just watched closely but even though they are so girly I wouldn't be surprised if they helped more next time!
Love the pictures, do you use Photoshop Elements?

I can relate. Your Gracie sounds like my 8 year old daughter! She loves all things pretty, so it's funny when she gets herself into dirty things. I guess we can call them diverse.
I am enjoying your blog very, very much. I love your photography.... Pictures say so much! I hope you don't mind, I've added you as a friend so that I can continue to visit.
Many blessings.
