Searching for Buried Treasure!!!

Posted in Life in the Crazy House

You know the commerical that asks, "What's in your wallet?"

Well, I'd like to ask you, "What's under your couch cushions?"

I used to try to keep things clean under my couch cushions.  Several years ago I had a weekly meeting in my home.  Each week I would make sure to dutifully clean and even vacuum under each cushion.  There was one time I didn't get to it, and wouldn't you know, some friends brought their sick kid over who proceeded to throw up right in the corner of my couch.  It was clean up the puke myself and avoid letting them see what was lurking under there, or let them do it and expose myself.  Well, in that case, I chose the latter, but any other time I would be just horrified if anyone saw what was actually under there.  That is, until now.

I see the junk under the couch cushions in a whole new light!  It's amazing how helpful it has been to keep that treasure trove just as it is!  The other day I needed a pencil.  I reached my hand in the cushion and "Voila!" there was a pencil!  Then my husband yelled that his comb was missing as he rushed to get ready for work.  I reach in my trusty treasure stash, and "Tada!" there's a comb!  The other day my daughter had a great time.  She decided to reach in to see what she could find.  Wouldn't you know, she came up with two miniature Mr. Goodbars and a Starkist candy!  What fun!

So you see, you have to look at things in a different light.  Now, whenever I need something, a pencil, comb, nail clippers, ponytail holder or midnight snack, I just reach on into my trusty couch and I am never disappointed.  Just don't bring over any sick kids.

Take that cleanies!!!

Oct. 1, 2008 - treasure hunting

Posted by Anonymous

We call cushion spelunking "treasure hunting". Of course, you always take your life in your hands reaching under there- usually there's some good stuff, but stuck to old snotty kleenexes and guinea pig turds! (don't ask!)

For myself, under the cushions is the only place I can be SURE to find a pencil, since, heaven forbid, anyone would ever consider putting a pencil in the pencil drawer!

Thanks for the invite to your blog and the LOL. I only clean out my couch when I'm looking for something and even then I don't vacuum it.

Oh, thanks for the laugh! I, too, used to faithfully vacuum under all couch cushions once a week...back when I had only one child, lol! I've never thought to use the mess as a treasure trove, though. I usually just try to ignore it. But maybe I should give it a try...I sure could use a fifty.

Oct. 7, 2008 - Loved your post!

I loved your post and you are so right! I once was sitting with a friend on my couch, back in the day when I had only one baby girl. We were chatting and he said there was something sticking him in the back. Wouldn't you know he reached down and pulled out, voila! a banana! We laughed for nearly twenty minutes and probably could have used some oxygen. It's good to know I'm not alone in this world. Thanks for sharing

Oct. 17, 2008 - Five bucks and a jawbreaker...

Okay, so I'm visiting the crazy house and decided to dig into the treasure trove. To my delight I found a unopened hot chocolate mix, a jaw breaker and five dollars. Too bad it was only Monopoly money :(

Oct. 22, 2008 - What's under your couch cushion?

Good question, I use the middle cushion for my filing cabinet. I keep papers, bills, important articles I want to keep close at hand. This way I know where they are. Because of my health problems ,I sit on the right end of the couch most of the time, and have my filing cabinet right next to me. I can also reach down in the sides and find pencils, handkerchieves, prayer cards, and a few morsels of cheese bits and corn curls from my night snacks. That my friends is what's under my couch cushion.

This seems to be a pretty popular question. Well, down in the side of the couch, I purposely put those smelly perfume samples.Once in a while I pull one out and take a whiff. I can't wear perfume because of my husband'd allergies, so that's how I get my perfume fix. I also find pencils like everyone else, but I am not usually desparate for them. Our pens and pencils seem to multiply like rabbits. I don't know where they come from. I still have some unopened packs I bought 18 years ago. I could put pencils on E-Bay. Usually a remote or two slips down there also . Like most of you we have an abundant supply of those. Have to keep four of them handy to work all of my gadgets. That's about it.

I feel like I can relate to you, even though I only have two kids and babysit 4 more. I am so with you on the couch cushion cleaning! Sometimes you just have to say, "Lets skip it!" and sit down with a glass of iced tea and a smile, knowing that you might have 45 seconds before a kid "really needs" you.
