The math that we teach in our homeschools isn't exactly rocket science, but for some of us, it might as well be. However, if I am reading his bio right, Jason Gibson is a real live rocket scientist. So let's just say, with a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering, and a Masters of Science in Physics, he's pretty good at math.
Now wouldn't you just love to have Mr. Gibson stop by sometime to help your kid understand his math schoolwork? Well, you can. OK, so he doesn't actually come to your house, but you can bring him into your home via DVD. (This I like, no cleaning necessary!)
The DVD's are available in the following subject areas:
- Basic Math Help
- Basic Math Word Problems
- Pre-Algebra Help
- Algebra 1 Help
- Algebra 2 Help
- Algebra Word Problems Help
- Advanced Algebra Help
- Matrix Algebra Help (NEW!)
- Geometry Help
- Trigonometry Help
- Pre-Calculus Help
- Calculus 1 & 2 Help
- Adv. Calculus 2 Help
- Calculus 3, Vol 1 Help Calculus 3, Vol 2 Help (NEW!)
- Physics 1 Help (Newtonian Mechanics)
- Physics 2, Volume 1 (NEW!) (Thermodynamics)
- Unit Conversions Help(NEW!)
- Probability and Statistics Help (NEW!)
Each of these DVD's features Mr. Gibson speaking directly to the student as he works out actual math problems. When he speaks to your child, he assumes that he or she has no prior knowledge of the subject, so he is very thorough in his approach. This is not a Hollywood production. It's just a man and his whiteboard.
What are the pros of this product?
Well, obviously the guy is smart. He know what he's talking about. If you look at your child's textbook and don't have a clue you will love to be able to pop in one of these DVD's and let Mr. Gibson explain it.
What's not to like? Like I said, it's not Hollywood. You kids most likely won't want to watch it over and over again. Mr. Gibson talks about math, knows his subject and is good at breaking down complex subjects into simple parts. However, if your child is used to lots of glitz and glitter, he or she may find him a tad boring. Of course, for most of us math IS boring! LOL If you have a kid who actually likes math, they will most likely find it interesting.
The Crazy Mom take: I have two kids for whom math is a favorite subject. (Yeah, lucky me, but don't be too jealous, I have one who hates everything! LOL) Anyway, I had these two test out the DVD's. Dode Man, 9, checked out the Basic Math Word Problems. He claims he didn't learn anything, not because of the DVD, but because he already "knows it all," but he called Mr. Gibson "a pretty cool guy."
Mr. Personality, 14 and a freshman, watched the Algebra 2 Help. Right now he's in Algebra 1, but so far he has also "known it all." Still, he says the DVD is fine, though he did say he felt Mr. Gibson repeated things a bit much.
Now I actually learned something! I took algebra in high school and college, but struggled the whole time. When it came time to teach First Born I was pretty clueless. I did manage to figure out most of it, but I never did learn how to figure out the slope of a line on a graph. Well, I am happy to report, I get it now. I watched the DVD with Mr. Personality when Mr. Gibson taught it, and he was able to make sense of it for me. That says something!
I would highly recommend these DVD's for any mom who for whom math is rocket science!

I can't really recommend this product.

I doubt this product would be helpful to many people.

This is a good product, but isn't right for everyone.

Most homeschool moms will find this useful.

This is great, and I would recommend it to anyone!!!
