New Review!!! SpellQuizzer!!!

Posted in Reviews

About the product:  SpellQuizzer is a very simple program that will help your child learn to spell.  Period.

It's so simple, yet so flexible!  All you do is decide what words your child needs to learn to spell.  You can decide this yourself, you can use words from any spelling program you are currently using, or you can use the lists that are available free from SpellQuizzer.   (Some example of available lists are Easter spelling words, Sample lists by grade, or frequently misspelled word lists.)

Once you have decided on the words you want your child to learn, you simply input them into Spell Quizzer and it will create the list.  There are two ways you can do this.  You can input the words with a microphone, or you can write in hints. You can do this in a very serious way, or you can have a lot of fun by speaking in a crazy accent or giving goofy hints.  (I recommend the fun way, of course!)

What are the pros of this product?  I like it because it's so simple to use.  Check out the screen shot of the main menu.  Notice how easy it is!

Also, once you create the list, you child can practice it over and over.  You put in a little time up front and then you can go off and take a long hot bath, surrounded by scented candles, while eating chocolate candy.  Or you could go cook dinner or scrub the toilet.

Now, if your child has a list of ten words and only gets eight right, the quizzer will let him or her go back and try them again.  It will keep quizzing your child until he or she gets them all right. (Or course, they can quit at any time if that's what you want.)

Of course you can use this program with all of your children.  As far as I can tell there is no limit to the number of lists you can create.

Here's an idea of what the screen looks like:

What's not to like?  The only thing I didn't see, that I would have liked to see, was any type of progress report.  I could be wrong, but I don't think there is one.  This is probably because many of the program's users are not homeschoolers, and the weekly spelling test from school would act as the progress report.  However, all you really need to do is set a time to give your child the quiz and be there to see how he or she did.

The Crazy Mom take:  This is a fun program to use, and my kids have enjoyed it.  One thing I did was make a list of names.  I put in everyone in the family's name and then made up a hint so that they had to figure out who I meant.  It made it a lot more fun.  I also added the name of our street and state.  These are two words my kids don't write much and it's embarrassing when they fill out the forms and can't spell them!

I have to admit that with everything else that I've been doing, we haven't done much spelling lately.  I am glad that we at least have this program so the kids are learning something.  When we get back to doing spelling regularly I will most likely use this program so that the kids can practice their words without me.  Everything is more fun when you can do it on the computer, don't you know?

My daughter, Princess, 10, really loves the program.  She likes the fact that she can keep trying until she gets everything right without having to spell every word over.  So far, with the exception of Woggit, 12, who is in the pre-puberty bad attitude mode, all my kids like it.  (Actually, I think he does like it, he would just never admit it.)

I think this is something we'll use for years to come.  When I want my kids to use it all I'll have to say is "come over to the computer and sit for a spell."

Aaahhh!!!  I just had to end with a bad joke.

What's the bottom line?  $29.95

*The Smiley System:

I can't really recommend this product.

I doubt this product would be helpful to many people.

This is a good product, but isn't right for everyone.

Most homeschool moms will find this useful.

This is great, and I would recommend it to anyone!!!
