UPDATED REVIEW!!!

Hi all, just a quick update here from the folk at ALEKS.  If you read my review from last year, you know that I absolutely loved ALEKS.  As a matter of fact, ALEKS made my TOP 10 TOS Crew Homeschool Product Awards.  (I have reprinted last year's review in its entirety below.)

While the main part of the program remains the same, there are several improvements to the master account.  As part of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I was given an addtional month of ALEKS so that I could check out the new and improved features.  Funny thing is, I spent all my time checking out the main part of the program last year and didn't spend much time using the master account anyway, so I am simply going to tell you what's new.  I will tell you that I HAVE made the effort to use the master account this year and it has been very simple and user friendly.

So here's what's new!!!

*  The ability to create a randomly generated or personalized quiz for your student

*   Attendance record sheets

*   A drop down menu which allows you the ability to choose which student's account you want to access

*  An overall better and easier to understand master account layout  (See the screenshot below.)

There are a whole slew of new reviews from our crew this year, so I'm going to give you the links for both years.  This will give you plenty of opinions to survey, or better yet, click on the icon at the top of the page (right there under the TOS Homeschool Crew banner) and get a free one month trial and try it for yourself!

Thanks for reading!

PS.  Right below is a screen shot of the pie chart.  This was my favorite part of the program, as well as my kids' favorite part.  It's just so fun to watch that pie fill up!

Student MyPie

Here's last year's review.

About the product/service:

According to their website ALEKS is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system.   It stands for "Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces."   Sounds very intellectual, does it not?  Well, it is!  LOL

ALEKS is a web-based math program for grades 3-12 (they also have some higher level courses.)  I really like the way it's set up.  Your child first does a series of problems from whatever level you choose.  Once this is done, the program assesses your child's strengths and weakness and sets up a program tailored to your child's needs.   Then the work the child is to do is represented in a pie chart.  For example, I have two kids in Level 5.  The pie is divided into five sections: whole numbers, fractions, decimals, geometry and algebra.  As your child completes problems from each piece of the pie, it's shaded in so that he/she can see exactly where he/she is at.  It's fun to see your pie chart filling up!

What I like most about the program is that once your child does a type of problem correctly several times, they move on.  No need to do pages and pages of problems that your child can already do.  My kids hate that and they start to get bored.  Sometimes I let them skip ahead and then they get too far ahead.  With ALEKS, it's all done automatically.  The kids don't have a chance to get bored.  They do review occasionally, but if the child is doing well, they will continue to advance.  Of course, if a child hits a snag, he or she can spend as much time as necessary until that type of problem is mastered.

This is not one of those "fun" programs.  There are no fancy colors or dancing dogs, or belching babies.  It's all business.  I think for the serious scholar, or the easily distracted child, this would be perfect.  I doubt they will beg to do their math, but most kids will get a sense of satisfaction as they see thier pie "fill up."  My kids don't seem to mind.  Of course my daughter Princess, 10, is much more agreeable than Woggit, 12, but he is not agreeable to changing his socks, so don't let that sway you!

What are the pros of this product?  I love that it's so automated.  I can see at a glance how much they've done, plus I am e-mailed a weekly report for each child.  I also like that it's very comprehensive.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a stand alone math program.

What's not to like?  Well, it can be a bit costly.  Cheaper than a tutor, but more expensive than most math texts.  However, if you can afford it, I think it's worth the cost.  (See the numbers below.)

The Crazy Mom take:  I would have to say, I think I like this program the most out of all the online programs I've seen.  It has been great for my daughter, Princess.  She is the one who was my "test student."  I wish now that I'd have had them all using it.  I just signed up three of my other kids for 30 days.  I am seriously considering using it for my son Woggit (maybe this summer) as he needs to just be able to do the work and move on.  He is always saying that math is "boring" because he knows it all.  This program knows what he knows, so it will put him exactly where he needs to be.

What's the bottom line?  The cost is $19.95 per month/$99.95 for 6 mos/$179.95 for a year.

I'm going to give ALEKS 4 out of 5 smileys.  *

  *The Smiley System:

I can't really recommend this product.

I doubt this product would be helpful to many people.

This is a good product, but isn't right for everyone.

Most homeschool moms will find this useful.

This is great, and I would recommend it to anyone!!!

Disclaimer!!!  I reviewed this product because I am a member of The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew.  I was given the product by the vendor to use and evaluate in my home so that I might share my insights with others.  Other than receiving the product, which I kinda have to to be able to assess the product, I am not compensated for my reviews in any way.  I am in no way obligated to give a positive review.  I do try to point out negatives when I see them, though I am admittedly a pretty easy going gal!  What you read are my honest assessments of the products I receive.

As with all products, you must do the research before buying.  Please visit the the other crew members' blogs, the vendor websites, and any other review sites you might find before buying.  I can't guarentee that a product will work for you.  You must decide what will fit with your teaching style, and your child(ren)'s learning style(s).  I do not judge anything other than the educational value of the products I review.  I am not qualified to make judgements as to the safely of any product, and I make no guarantee that the products I review are safe for you, your family, or anyone else.  I am simply giving my opinion, only you know what is best for you and your family.

Don't use your blow dryer while you sleep or take a bath.  Don't read my reviews in the tub either, and please do not read them when you are asleep, though I do not guarantee that you won't fall asleep reading them!

This blog is meant to be a humorous diversion for the harried homeschool mom. Crazy Mom is not the gal you'll see writing "how to" books, but you can look to her for a little humor and maybe even a little bit of wisdom thrown in here and there!!! Learn about my life and my family and you'll feel better about your own!!! :) ************************* Also, as part of the Old Schoolhouse Magazine Focus Group I will be checking out and reviewing some cool new homeschool products.
