I remember a conversation that took place a few years back between my daughter Princess and I as she took clothes out of the washer and put them in the dryer. She was probably nine or so when it happened. I made a comment to her about what a good wife she would be one day and how glad her husband would be that she married him. She responded, "But the question is...will I be glad I married him?" Good question.
How do we figure out what kind of man is good enough for our little girl? And do we even have any say in the matter? Is good old-fashioned courtship a thing of the past? Voddie Baucham believes that is shouldn't be, and I happen to agree. I recieved his book, What He Must Be if He Wants to Marry My Daughter as part of the Crossway Books blogger program. (See http://www.crossway.org/blog)
This is a great book. It lays it all out on the line. I would say about 97% of the population would disagree with most everything in this book. If you limit it to Christians, it might go down to 92%. Baucham doesn't care. He has studied the Word, and I believe he is pretty much spot on in what he teaches.
If you already aren't of the persuasion that men should head the household, and that children are blessings, you will most likely hate this book. Yes, I said hate. However, you might just want to read it anyway. Look at our current divorce rates. We must be doing something wrong. I think Baucham is on to something.
This is a good read for anyone with kids who wants them to grow up to have a successful marriage. And guys, if you aren't the man you should be, it might not be bad to read it for yourself!
