As part of the Bethany House blogger program, I received Alicia Britt Chole's Finding an Unseen God: Reflections of a Former Athiest. The book is an autobiography that tells Chole's life story as a girl who grows up with no reason to believe in God. As the story unfolds, we are given glimpses into the mindset of an athiest. In the end, she is converted in a way not unlike Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus. In other words, as she followed a path that she felt would in no way lead her to Jesus, she suddenly found herself in his presence.
I enjoyed the book. It is not fluff, yet it is a quick and enjoyable read. The writing style is friendly and conversational. The way the book is written, with excellent advice for dealing with unbelievers woven into Chole's testimony, makes it helpful as well as interesting to read.
Reading a book such as this one makes it easier to see the athiest not as an ememy, but as someone who is lost and in need of redemption. It reminds us of the power of prayer and of the power of God. There might have been people who thought Chole would never come to know Christ, yet people prayed and never gave up, and one wonderful day, the angels rejoiced.
Happy Reading!
