As part of the TOS Homeschool Crew I received College Prep Genius: The No Brainer Way to SAT Success. We were asked to simply give you a little peak at what the program is about before our full review is due in a few weeks. So here it is!
I was actually very excited to get this program. Even though my kids take the ACT, they still take the PSAT in their junior year. My son will be taking it in about one month. I'm not sure that is enough time to really take full advantage of the program, but it sure will help! Also, I do think some of the information, or maybe most of it, is just as helpful for kids taking the ACT.
With my older son, the hardest part of the ACT was the essay. He took the exam three times before getting a high essay score. We finally came up with some tips for essay writing. I guess we were on to something because College Prep Genius gave the same tips, plus a few more. Had we had this program two years ago, First Born could have saved some time and money. Oh, well, we have seven more kids to take the test! :)
Anyway, I have looked through the whole program pretty thoroughly, though my son has yet to use it. Actually, I plan on him starting today. This is his first day of homeschool this year and this is going to be one of his subjects for the next month. I also have a PSAT prep book that I used with my oldest, and I have an official SAT prep book. Oh, boy, looks like loads of fun! LOL
I do think, from what I've read, the book will be helpful. It's loaded with all sorts of ways to help remember key strategies to sucessfully take the test. Lots of acronyms have been created to help memorize helpful tips. Honestly, I don't know if my son will be able to remember all of them, but I figure if we pinpoint his weak areas he can learn the ones that pertain to those and not worry about the rest.
So, we'll see! The test is in mid-October, and we'll see how he does. For privacy reasons, I won't be publishing his actual score, but I will be able to tell you if it seems like this program helped him. We have a book of actual SATS so I will simply have him take one before and after using the program to see what kind of unscientific results we get!
Looking forward to the real review!
