Debunking Common Myths About Homeschooling Post #2
Posted in Its all a Matter of Learning
For the next seven days, I am going to share with you 7 common myths that homeschooling opponents usually throw our way. Each myth will be DEBUNKED!!
I'm happy to report that after all of these years, the myths that have been thrown before my path have all been debunked and I will attempt to share with you some of the myths that I have encountered!
Myth #2
You should send your children to school to be socialized.
This is one of the many reasons we homeschool, to avoid all of the negative peer groups, the pressure to try drugs, the exposure to violence, and the all too early obsession that occurs for the opposite sex. Children are also persuaded to give up their individuality. To a Christian, this is equivalent to leaving your faith by the wayside in favor of the politically correct (group-minded goals). Are these the values that you want your children to hold dear?
I was a very good student socializing in school but I ALWAYS got into trouble for it!!! Did you ever hear, "Now girls!!!!! Turn around!! Pay attention!! Sit up straight and stop that chattering!! Is there something that you would like to share with the whole class?!! Remember, WE ARE NOT HERE TO SOCIALIZE!!!!!" Yeah, I have it all memorized! LOL :-D Socialization nearly ruined me!
In His Love,

I always thought that the socialization myth was crazy. Putting children in a totally artificial enviornment of a school, (only among peers, emphasis on being one with the crowd etc.) and calling it socialization for real life! Nothing is more real life than schooling within the family community. Learning real skills and talking and learning about real life within the 'real' life setting! I have noticed the biggest difference between those teens that have been in a public school enviornment and those who have been homeschooled. The teens who have been homeschooled interact much better with younger children and those older than themselves than those who were 'schooled.' Teens in schools tend to herd together at events and homeschooled teens interact with everyone!

I am afraid that in my experience when it comes to the socialization myth, my sister's are blind and cannot see. When we were all together for my Dad's funeral, both of my sisters commented on how mature Marissa is. My uncle described Marissa as poised. She got along with all the cousins (age 5 through 21) and was comfortable with my Uncle Bob who is 71.
I had started homeschooling Marissa due to lack of special ed programs in our area, so my younger sister was surprised when I told her I would be homeschooling the two kids we are adopting from Haiti. "Well, they need to learn how to get along with other kids." ARGH!!!

LOL, You are totally correct. We weren't there to socialize. Great point.
