For the next seven days, I am going to share with you 7 common myths that homeschooling opponents usually throw our way. Each myth will be DEBUNKED!! I'm happy to report that after all of these years, the myths that have been thrown before my path have all been debunked and I will attempt to share with you some of the myths that I have encountered! We are now on myth #7: Myth #7 Your children will never get a good job if they don't go to college.
Although this final myth has more to do with a time after your children have already graduated it still factors into the homeschool equation at present. Take a good look around you. In the town or city where you live how many industries or corporations exist who will employ your son or daughter? Do they even need a degree to obtain these jobs? Will they be told that they are over qualified for the position they are seeking after they graduate from college? Have you considered encouraging your son or daughter to start their OWN business? Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-college but I am tired of that same old question (so what about college?) like it's a right of passage! It's starting to sound like the old, ("So, what about socialization?") question to me. College is NOT for everyone, NOT because these children are too stupid, quite the opposite!!! Do we truly seek the Lord when we are making the choice to send our children to college or do we just assume that it's something every good Christian parent does? Can you guess who spoke these words?
"But in college there is no time to commune with one's thoughts. One goes to college to learn, it seems, not to think. When one enters the portals of learning, one leaves the dearest pleasures – solitude, books and imagination – outside with the whispering pines. I suppose I ought to find some comfort in the thought that I am laying up treasures for future enjoyment, but I am improvident enough to prefer present joy to hoarding riches against a rainy day."
Do we look down upon our brothers and sisters who have chosen not to send their child to college? If we do, then knowledge has already begun it's work of puffing up instead of building up. Look for those gifts and talents that the Lord has placed in your child's heart. Do these gifts require further development through the vehicle of college? Then go for it! Are you already seeing an abundance of fruit from your child through these giftings? Seek to further encourage them through an apprenticeship or more independent learning at home! If we all had to go to college to further our own educations we would never get anything else accomplished in our lives. As Christians, we are all a part of ONE body, the body of Christ, but we are created with a wide variety of various gifts, bents and callings. Do you need wisdom today? Seek the giver of all wisdom and true understanding for YOUR children.
Please never forget, view all of this present life and all that it entails and every decision that we must make in the awesome heavenly light of enternity. Look through the eyes of our Lord Jesus Christ, you won't regret it!
College is of vital importance for some careers, but of little consequence for others. It just depends upon what path the Lord has chosen for your son or dd. My dd wants to be a lawyer. It is not only vital that she attend college but then law school. Which law school is also vital if she were to practice law for civilian society. She plans to enter the military and be a Judge Advocate General. That throws a whole new set of monkey wrenches into the college issue.
However, you have heard that A students end up working for C students, right? College doesn't prepare you for life unless your chosen path requires college. College may prepare you for a corporate job. My dh didn't finish his B.A. degree. He would be much more promotable if he had. He is in the accounting field with a large corporation. But he wants to own his own business someday. For this, you do not need a college degree.
Further, I think this question sometimes reflects a different question really. I think many think that a homeschooled child CANNOT get into college. That is incorrect and actually more and more colleges are seeking out homeschoolers because they are usually more well-rounded and better prepared for the independant nature of college. Even the prestigious colleges? Yes even those! My dd wants to go to Stanford. Stanford is almost homeschool friendly!
By the way, I loved your comment on my blog about the telemarketer who thought you had all kinds of time because you homeschooled. ROFL I guess that's just like all the time people think I have because I own my own business! We both do nothing all day long but eat bon bons and answer telemarketer calls! ROFLOLOL
I really enjoyed reading your posts about the myths. I find that more and more of the people I know that also know my dc don't believe those myths as much as they used to. People are beginning to see that hs kids DO thrive and are "normal".
Thanks for writing these, it's just what I needed today. ;o)

Welcome to our homeschooling treasure trove of learning and ideas. This is our place to share some of the exciting things that we are doing and learning together in our family's homeschooling adventure. We are Christians, and our goal is to yield to our Heavenly Father's will. We hope to encourage others who may be considering homeschooling and help to dismiss some of the misconceptions they may have about living a life of learning!
