Bilingual, Spanish, and Second language links

This morning, I thought I'd post some helpful links for those teaching in Spanish, bilingually, or Spanish as a second language. I did not collect these links on my own, rather there is a group of us that have compiled this, and continue as we find more. Later, I'll try to post more links to make worksheets, and flashcards. I know I have them around here somewhere.

Dec. 31, 2007 - Spanish as a second language

I home school my 3 and 5 year olds. Everything I teach them in English, I teach them in Spanish. It has been extremely successful!! My Father is originally from Argentina and helps me when I need it (he did not teach me Spanish growing up). They have been learning to read (in English) for a while now, using my ABEKA curriculum, but I have no curriculum to teach them how to read and write in Spanish. Do you know of any curriculum that teaches young children how to read and write in Spanish? I have been looking at a curriculum called "Foro abierto para la lectura". It is found on https://www.sraonline.com/products.html?tid=16&sid=30. If you have any other suggestions, for a curriculum to teach kids how to read and write in Spanish I would greatly appreciate it!

Jan. 3, 2008 - Spanish as second language

Thanks for visiting! I explained how I taught my daughter reading in a previous blog entry: http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/creativeplay/311486/. The jist of it is, I did not use a curriculum. I used a list I came across in a school of a suggested order of presenting syllables and notecards. I did find a good book and workbook later on. It is called La Pata Pita, written by Cuban writers. It is very inexpensive and can be found at http://www.mibibook.com. If you would like a copy of the list I used, join spanishrecursos (link at right) and download it from the Files section. Again, I did not use a curriculum, and don't find it necessary. Teaching vowels, then one consonant at a time (ma, me, mi, mo, mu) is very effective and pretty much how we did it in the classrooms I worked in.

Although your children learn as a second language, they are young enough to be taught in this manner. The first words they are learning are basic vocabulary anyway- mama, papa, gato, etc. Oh! I forgot, there is also a kinder curriculum in the Files of spanishrecursos that may be helpful in your endeavours.

Good luck! And feel free to come back with more questions or comments.
