Featured Blogger ~ HomeschoolCrew

Posted By HomeschoolBlogger Company Blog in Featured Blogger of the Week

We have a new blog here on HSB and it's one many of you will get excited about! It's the TOS Homeschool Crew and they will be steering homeschoolers toward great products.

Here's how this blog works:

The blog will be the home-base for the TOS Homeschool Crew reviews. Heidi is the captain and she will post a basic product description. The members of the crew will come and post a link to their reviews.

So what are some of these product reviews? For starters we have The Old Schoolhouse Magazine's Fall Promotion and Help Me to Teach. The Crew has been kept busy and they already have something to share with you, their thoughts on the above products!

A couple of reviews coming up are for
Peterson Directed Handwriting and Knowledge Quest - Homeschool ABC's Class. Now keep in mind, there are no reviews yet, the Crew has just got under way, but there will be reviews here for you to check out soon. Give the Crew a chance to look the products over and get things ship-shape so they can help direct you to the best course of action.

You know what I love about this review blog idea? You get to leave comments with your questions and your own thoughts on any of the products being reviewed! If you aren't a Crew member, don't sign Mr. Linky with a link to your own review of the product, just leave a comment with a few of your own insights. You don't find this kind of product testimony action every day!

So turn to and get busy reading these reviews!

The State of Education: Doing Hard Things

Posted By Gena Suarez, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

"Do Hard Things.” That’s the title of a book by Alex and Brett Harris, twin brothers of Josh Harris of “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” fame.

If you haven’t read the book, I think you’d find it worth your while. While the book is aimed at teens, it has some real lessons for everyone. I know I stepped away from it reflecting on its lessons for me.

The premise of the book is that society sets expectations for teens ridiculously low, that teens are capable of excellence in their spiritual and material lives, and that the revolution – or as the twins like to say, rebelution -- is already underway.

The book outlines ways for teens to identify their weaknesses and overcome them and ways they can maximize their strengths. It’s packed with real life examples. Above all, it’s a cheerleader in print – a “you can do it” book.

You won’t mistake “Do Hard Things” for C.S. Lewis or Chesterton or any of the deep thinkers of Christianity. It’s more along the lines of the ever popular motivational books that sell by the millions today – but with the twist of simple spiritual substance where many of those books lack it.

I think that if my children were still teens and I wanted them to read “Do Hard Things,” I’d want to make it a discussion book, one that all of us would read and talk about. On the other hand, teens in the throes of rebellion or lacking a good relationship with their parents would benefit from a read-alone approach.

The book would make a very good gift for public school students who long for something more challenging and meaningful in their lives.

Finally, if you read the book yourself, look for the lessons that can apply to our job as parents. Homeschooling can sometimes be one of the very big “hard things” we do in life, and you’ll find help in mustering the courage and tenacity to stick with it as well good examples of what it means to not give up when the going gets tough.

Freebie Finder - ID Cards

Posted By Gena Suarez, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

I was in JoAnn’s this week picking up supplies for a couple of homeschool co-op classes I am teaching and found that my educator discount card was expired!  I sure was glad that I had my teacher ID card with me so they would issue me a new discount card.

Did you know that you can print a free teacher ID card and ID cards for your kids online?  Here is the site where you will find them. All you need to do is fill out the form on their website and they produce the card and email it to you in pdf format. From there you can print it out or even have it laminated.

There are A LOT of places that offer a discount for teachers, so be sure to ask wherever you purchase things for your school.  Some of the places I have discount cards are Barnes and Noble, Borders, and JoAnn’s.

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

Special Words for Special Needs ~ Getting Started

Posted By HomeschoolBlogger Company Blog in specialneeds
Hello! I'm Heather and I'm going to be your blog host for Special Words for Special Needs.  I hope to give you uplifting encouragement and practical advice to those of us with special kids.  I would like to take a moment and define special needs. This term gets such a bad rap from it's usage in the public schools. I see special needs as children that learn outside the "norm".  That means a genius or a mentally impaired child. Physical, emotional,  and medical difficulties that interfere  with learning.  Chronic long term issues or acute short term issues.

As a first article and with it still early fall lets talk about starting off homeschooling our special kids. Or perhaps you began your year and problems are cropping up. I am a big fan of know where you are so you can know where you are going. Other words get a base line knowledge of your child's skills and then set about making goals to shoot for. Here are a few steps that might help.

 1.   Make an assessment of education, physical, and emotional skills.   This can be a formal assessment with the local school system or hired professionals.  Beware if you use the school system you maybe inviting long term involvement with the school system into your homeschooling program. Check your laws carefully before contacting them, if that is the what you choose. Also, depending on your insurance, professional assessments can be expensive. Shop around, check references, be a savvy shopper!  You may also choose to assess your child's progress at home. There are myraids of milestone charts to be found on the internet, Google "milestone charts" or "education milestones".  This is your baseline, the foundation of the year.

2. How does my child learn?  Now that you have a baseline, which areas were the best?  Did your child learn best with art?  Then perhaps they are a visual learner. If your child can remember songs off the radio easily, then they may be an audio learner. Does your child remeber best while bouncing in their chair or hands in the sand reproducing erosion? Then they may be a kinetic learner.  Take their learning style and use it! Make their strengths the focus of their schooling not the weaknesses. By this I do not mean forget their weaknesses. I mean develop a feeling of accomplishment in education.

3.  Take the time to write out a HIEP (home individual education plan)  This can be something very formal such as, you are working with the school system and have an IEP with them, to less formal for mom and dad's eye's only. I say write it out so that you have something to refer back to in three months. Don't let your hard work of assessing and noting learning styles go to waste.
Write out where you are.
Write out the best and worst methods of learning.
Write out the goals for the coming year.  "I would like Grace to be reading simple 3 and 4 letter words."
Write out how you intend to get there. "I will reinforce the alphabet. Use Horizon's Phonic workbooks. We will use flash cards with simple words on them since she is so visually oriented."
Write out how you know that you have accomplished your goal.  "Grace can read a "Dick and Jane" book to me."

It may seem like a lot to do. I have found that when I sit down and write out my goals like I have outlined, the pressure is off. Homeschooling a child with special needs can be a pressure cooker. If I can in any way release some of that pressure I am willing to do it. I have also found that my husband really appreciated the goals list. The HIEP helped him get on the same page with us and he was better able to assist and cheerlead when I needed it.

4. Finally  take it easy on yourself and your child.  If you have high goals set your sights on them. But do not let the drive to bring things up to the standard hurt your relationship. Some child are learning but they must learn slowly to fully understand. If you push on before they are ready, you are courting disaster and most likely frustration.  Keep your family and life priorities straight.  "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth."  3 John 4

May God bless your homeschool with abundance and joy!  Peace my friends.

Homeschooling Only One ~ Big Doings!

Posted By HomeschoolBlogger Company Blog in hsingonlyone

Sorry I missed last week's column. Suddenly it was Friday! (...but wasn't it still Thursday? Nope, I was totally off on my days! Yikes!)

I have been so very busy in the last couple of weeks and now can announce the Great Move! I've been moving HOOville (message board for those who Homeschool Only One, affectionately called HOOville). It's a totally new format, so there has been (and still is) a LOT to learn. I'm using phpbb 3.0 instead of websitetoolbox.com, which I still can heartily recommend.

I've revamped the title of Parent Forums and the Forums to reflect the idea of "HOOville" as a village. There is the Town Square where one would introduce themselves and at The Serendipity Tea House we do all our chit chat and general discussions. There are also some private areas which we call Our Sanctuary (members only). The member ranks at present are according to a medieval list of gentle ladies (starting with Peasant Woman to Gentlewoman, on up to Baroness, Countess, Princess, and Queen). We've not had any HOOdads join us, but if they do, we will give them their own honorary titles. They will be most welcome and I can even open a forum just for them.

I hope if you are homeschooling only one student, you'll come check HOOville out and join us! Lots of good fellowship and support is to be found there. It's a very nice group to be a part.

Donna Conner lives in Fort Worth, TX with her husband, Glenn, their son, Mike, and their dog, Lucia. Donna and Glenn have been homeschooling their son since the beginning of his education. Mike completes his homeschooling this year. Donna is an artist and has always enjoyed writing. She wrote Homeschooling Only One five years ago, after discovering that there were many other families homeschooling only one child. Her website is devoted to those with only one student in their homeschool, with listings of online resources. My week in pics...

Posted By TnMomwith3kids in Crafts

I'll start out by saying my week was full of candy corn...crafting that is. My kids wanted to do a whole lot more, but I had to put an end to all the madness.

Earrings made from REAL candy corn

Paper cone candy corn holder

Paper corn holder doubles as a party hat

This is her 'candy tote' for the festival this year.

Pizza is apparently the theme in October. I didn't know that until I bought this pack at Currclick. I was looking for some pizza themed activities, since my DS2 chose that for his birthday. I have to come up with a pizza cake. So far this week we have had pizza sandwiches (no picture because we were all starving).
 Tonight we had pizza lasagna....

Note our three science projects that are currently underway...
1. Chicken in vinegar (since Tuesday the 7th)
2. Spider plant -regrowing roots
3. Eggplant just rotting on my counter...I assure you there is a good reason for that one. Just not sure what yet.

This is over at a friend's house for dinner last night. YEP, that's a squirrel on DS1's head!

Home this morning

Posted By Hands and Hearts in Noah Updates
When we got to the ER last night we were not able to see an attending surgeon.  The resident was very nice, but it was a bit unnerving that he was in Noah's ER room Sunday watching the broviac repair for the FIRST time ever . . . . which meant that the surgeon and I had exactly the same amount of experience doing these repairs - we had each watched it done one time.  Ugh.  Anyway, it isn't rocket science and he did fine.  He messed up the first time and there was a bit of a tizzy when a second kit couldn't be found.  They said they usually only keep two on hand and Noah used them both up in a matter of three days!  Another kit was finally located and the line was repaired.  We got home about 3:30 this morning.

That is the good news.  The more frustrating news is that this line will break again.  It isn't a matter of if but when and where.  We don't want Noah to need a new line.  We don't want to lose this established line, put him through the risks, pain, and trauma of surgery, and be one line closer to his last possible line.

We also don't want to see him walking around like a time-bomb.  I KNOW that he is in God's hands and that God is Noah's shield and his safety, but right now I'm afraid - truly afraid - that Noah will catch and snap this line when no one is looking.  We've come close to losing Noah before, but never in such an acute, emergent way as last night and I am still shaken.

Add to this my frustration (see - I'm being honest LOL) that Noah is about to have to turn around and be admitted AGAIN for a transfusion, and it all adds up to a bruised and hurting mommy.  We are seeing our fantastic beloved family doctor this afternoon and will seek his council.  I'm also making an appointment to see our regular surgeon.  Our home nurse (who is amazing) is very concerned about the line and felt that it should have been replaced.  I don't see the surgeon being willing to do it while it is still working - and I don't want it to be replaced.  I don't want a weak repaired line either.  They say it's a woman's perogative to change her mind, and I'm doing a pretty efficient job of exercising my perogative right now!

In my heart I know that it goes down the double-mindedness that James wrote about so long ago.  I hate being tossed about and I'm trying to find my footing - my Solid Rock.  I know that my very complex emotions are making everything harder right now.  I'm having to make the choice every moment today to walk in the TRUTH, not in the way that I feel.

I will update when we have information.  Thank you all more than I can say for your prayers and outpouring of love and concern.

Blessings,
Kate

Good Busy

Posted By hugmom in Family News

We all know there is such a thing as "Good Busy" and "Bad Busy" and I must say that recently we have been a very good busy! It certainly shows in my lapse from blogging. I miss being on here more regularly, but life just keeps on moving along far too quickly. So much to do, and time keeps moving too fast.

For those who keep up, I did begin teaching in our 3s Sunday School class a month ago, I can hardly believe it has already been a month!! They are a fun little group and it helps me come up with new activities for my little guys at home as well, which is an added blessing. The little boys are doing well, staying busy with the usual toddler and preschooler activities that seem to spur them on to growing up far too quickly. Hearing them laughing together is such a joy, once I get past the "uh oh, what are they up to?" feeling! Oh, the things these two can giggle about, and yes, they are definitely boys. I even caught them one day spitting, yes spitting, lovely thing to have a 1 year old and 3 year old boy doing, part of the joy of having them in the same room together! Anyway, that was just one of their gross moments, usually I find them bouncing balls all over the place, rolling matchbox cars off of tables, or sitting beneath the piano lightly banging their heads in unison to hear the echo. If you haven't seen two little guys sitting side by side under a piano, it truly is something to see. I'll do my best to get 2G17 to click a picture for me to put on here, they are adorable.

School is going full force and quite well, we are enjoying the year and can hardly believe the holidays are creeping closer. We were in Lowe's the other day and they already had Christmas trees up!!! YES, Christmas trees, at the end of September! Commercialism, such a sad side of the holidays. BUT, on a good note, I made it into a Marketing course with The Old Schoolhouse, and am so excited about it. Perhaps I'll learn more so that I can understand the up-side of commercialism. This should help me write better press releases for our daughter. And I hope to learn about the marketing side of the business world, what works and what doesn't. 1G21 is done with the first round of editing for Book 2, so the coming months will bring much more editing and proofreading work as we near the publishing of her second book in the series. You can still check it out at www.jessicalynncampos.com. Perhaps you'll see some website improvements soon as I learn more about marketing!

If you are one of my marketing members, please drop a comment. I will be doing my best to add you all as friends if I know you have a homeschoolblogger account. I love to learn, it is one of my greatest joys in homeschooling. I've learned so much more while teaching my children than I ever did in public schools. Learning is definitely a lifetime joy, enjoy it!!

So what is your October bringing for your family? Will you Trick or Treat traditionally? Or attend a Fall Festival of some sort? Or do you choose to skip it altogether and focus on the wonderful season of Fall? Share, we'd love to hear it!
