Last Friday our homeschool group went on a field trip to the George Washington Carver Museum. It was great! B learned a lot of stuff, he spent 30 minutes telling Dad all about it! One of the neatest rooms they had was where they had on display a lot of the items that African Americans had invented. This was very eye-opening to us! I was excited that an African-American had invented the ice cream scoop! (tells you were my priorites are!). B was excited about the NASA engineer who invented the Super Soaker! After we came home B asked if we were going to learn anymore about what African-Americans had done? I hadn't planned a unit on this but when he ask, I teach. I asked him if he had any ideas and he said "How about a lapbook!" I love it!!! Today, we start looking at 20 African Americans that have made an impact on our lives here in the United States. The book I am using is "Values in Action: Life stories of 100 American Heroes" by Joanne Mattem. I bought it at Barnes and Nobles three years ago! I knew it would come in handy someday. SO, War of 1812, we will visit you soon. We are off to learn about some great people! Be blessed! |
