• Sep. 4, 2009 - What do we put in our Workboxes?

I did a recent post about us incorporating the workbox system into our homeschooling this year.  It has been 5 weeks and things are going great.  I am so glad we are able to get around to doing things we would have not done before.  Today I want to share with you what I have been putting into my son's workboxes for him to complete each day.  Before I do that I will show you some of the products we are using this year.  Click on the pictures to take you to their websites.

Now on to the workboxes.  Sue Patrick's system is set up as 12 clear plastic shoe boxes on a wire rack.  We don't have space for that in our apartment so I bought the Smartspace 10 drawer rolling organizer cart.  It holds books perfectly without me having to bend anything.  Each day I fill up the drawers with the work for subjects we will cover that day, the supplies he needs to complete the work as well as some FUN Box activities.  Boxes 1-3 and 5 hold the same things each day.  This helps cut down on the time it takes to fill the workboxes each night.  Here are pics of those boxes...

1. This is a sheet and a crayon for my son to color a lightbulb that day for the countdown to his 100 days of school.

2. We're doing the Book of Virtues Unit Study and this is the last of unit 1.  Here is the worksheets, mini books that goes with it, and a pencil.

3. My son is working through MUS Gamma this year.  This is the DVD, his student text, and a pencil.

5. This is his Sequential Spelling book, a folder with paper to write that days words, and a pencil.

Boxes 4, 6-9 changes up each day.  Some are regular workboxes and others are the FUN Boxes.  Here are pictures of what's in those regular workboxes.

This is his grammar book, CD, and a pencil.

This is a Reading Comprehension worksheet with the questions on the back and a pencil.

These are the Write Shop cards with the character, character trait, setting, and plot as well as paper and a pencil for my son to write a story.  I took this pic after my son had completed his for the day.

This is what we are doing for Science this year.

This is his Prima Latina DVD's, workbook, and a pencil.

We are doing a unit study on the Stringed Family for Music.  Here are some cards to make a game as part of the lapbook we are making.

This is his art book, some crayons, and there's a sheet of drawing paper under the book for the project.

This is another example of an art box that has some crayons, the sheet from the CD with the project he is doing, underneath is some scissors.

This is a worksheet of the state he is learning about for Geography with some markers to color the picture.  I took this pic after he had already finished it.

This sheet is the History about the state he is learning for Geography.  We read this together and discuss it afterwards.

This is his workbook to practice writing Latin Hymns and Prayers in cursive handwriting along with a pencil.

I did not take pics of the FUN Box activities because this post is already getting too long.  Some of the things I put in boxes for fun are puzzles, mazes, jacks and a ball, marbles, brain teasers, flash cards, toothpicks and marshellows, fun science projects, Magnetix, Legos, and motor skills activities.  I hope I helped someone get a better idea of how to make use of their workbox system.

• Aug. 2, 2009 - Our Workbox System

Have you heard about the new thing homeschoolers these days are getting so hip to?  It's Sue Patrick's Workbox System.  I kept wondering why I was hearing about this on all my online support groups.  I even read the interview that TOS Homeschooling with a Heart did with Sue on facebook.  It sounded so great I went and checked out her website.  After seeing what she and others had to say about this system I knew it was something I needed to try with my son to help him organize his day.

We start our 3rd year of homeschooling tommorrow. I finally got our workbox system set up to begin our new school year. This is our first time doing this system and we are so excited about it. I took some pics of our completed setup to share with anyone who needs yet another visual...LOL!

In this picture you see my son's morning schedule he needs to complete before school starts.

In this picture you see my son's evening schedule after he has completed all his tasks.

In this picture is my son's school schedule, clock in and out pockets, and his schedule strip for workboxes. Each day I change up the school schedule so he will know what subjects we will cover that day.

This is "The Fidget Basket". My son has aspergers and ADHD. Whenever he gets a break he's allowed 10 minutes to play with things in this basket.

These are our workboxes. My son loves talking about the weather so my dh made weather number cards for him. His favorite color is also red as you can see above his schedule strip is red.

I hope this helps anyone out there who's trying to get theirs set up. I've seen so many different ways others have incorporated their system. It's amazing what you can do once you put your mind to it.  Well until next time Happy Homeschooling .

• Jun. 7, 2009 - Why do we homeschool?

Like so many others we have our reasons for educating our son at home.  Many people do it for different reasons.  There must be a purpose for why one does something or it won't mean much to you.  Here are our top 10 reasons we homeschool in this season of our lives (reasons may change over time):

1.  No one knows our son better than WE do.

2.  We can teach him 1 on 1 giving him the individual attention he needs.

3.  There are fewer distractions for him to have to deal with.

4.  There is flexibility in choosing curriculum that best suits HIS needs.

5.  He can learn at HIS own pace.

6.  We know he's actually retaining what he learns rather than him "just getting by" academically.

7.  We can cater to "his interests and abilities" so that learning is FUN for him.

8.  We can take breaks when it's needed.

9.  He has the freedom to "express and be himself" without the pressure of having to be like the other kids to be accepted.

10. He can be an "individual" which is better for HIS self esteem.

• Apr. 10, 2009 - Autism Awareness Month

I'm so thankful for our son that God blessed us with. Yes it's like a puzzle sometimes raising him, and that's why I rely on my Heavenly Father to guide me each step of the way.  Although there have been many challenges I wouldn't trade him for another. Yes my life has changed since having him around, but he has been such a blessing to our lives.  If any of you have children with autism (or on the spectrum) I want you to know you are not alone because we have something in common.  I may not know you or ever get to meet you so I'm sending you a big cyber {{{HUG}}} and share with you this tribute I watched for autism awareness month http://www.lindahodgdon.com/resources/autismFamilyVideo.html.

Note:  If you need more helpful information, check out one of my earlier posts.

• Sep. 2, 2008 - Special Needs Information

My husband and I have only 1 child.  He will be 9 years old next month.  When he was 4 years old he was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.  He also has NVLD (Nonverbal Language Disorder), SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder), and ADHD.  We wanted more kids but we have not had any success with that yet.  I guess they will come in God's timing.   If not, adoption is always an option too.

Since my son was diagnosed I have done a whole lot of research in the last 4 years.  Here are some links I like to visit to educate myself on things related to my sons special needs:

Through our homeschooling journey I wish to encourage and share resources as well as wisdom that would be of help to the homeschooling community. By bringing our academy to the public, we hope to gather more insight and information from other homeschool families, who have already walked the path that we are now on. I welcome your ideas and suggests that will help us as we educate our son more about God and His calling on his life.
