Jul. 15, 2007 - A Formal Introduction

Our little guy is here! At 11 PM, after a day little unlike the one before, I informed my husband who had settled in to listen to some music, that he might not want to get too comfortable. "Really?" he replied in suprise. Up until that point 'nothing' had appeared to be happening beyond the usual crampiness I had been experiencing for sometime. In fact, he and his brother (who's wife is also expecting) had just been making fun of HollyWood's portrayal of the helpless pregnant woman and the sudden, rushed onset of labor that leads the panicked father heading to the hospital. To affirm for him that I was not joking, I made a quick phone call to the on-call doctor who told me to come in. I had told her that I'm a poor judge of what is happening with my body sometimes, and that in labor I am fine coping until transition, which is often where I show my first outward signs of discomfort. I was afraid that if I let it get to that point, I might not make it to the hospital. My mom lives just down the road and was there in minutes. My husband was trying to gather his things and I had to push him out the door because he did not understand that I REALLY did NEED to get to the hospital. When we arrived he was still gathereing some of our belongings and I just started walking to the entrance, apologizing to him for not waiting as I went. Once in, we had to do the normal 'check baby's heartbeat, check for contractions stuff' that they need to do before they decide to admit you. We were left in the room briefly and I started feeling urgent. They needed to hurry and get back. The nurse was having a hard time picking up any of my contractions, though she could see by the way I was acting that I was having them. She thought that they were small ones that I was not tolerating well. Another nurse came in to double check and then suggested we just see how dilated I was. She started laughing and then said, "Oh, they are going to love it when I put that you are at eight-centimeters up on the board!" She then started joking about how at least now they would not have to rush to get me pain management. We got to the room, and soon I began to push but the Doctor had not arrived and the nurses tried to slow me down. I must admit, I yelled at her. It's the first I have yelled at anyone during labor. I screamed that I could not just sit there and do nothing. She then suggested to the baby-nurse that she glove up too, shrugged her shoulders, and told me to do what I had to do. Enter Doctor-just in time to catch. A couple more pushes and TA-DA! Our baby boy was here weighing in at 7lbs 11oz.
Some of my four year olds first words to her brother were:
"Hi Myles, I am Eilidh! This is Asher, and that's Mommy." ...A perfectly formal introduction if you ask me.

Beautiful baby!
Great story! PTL! And a great name! Very manly.
See, you could've saved alot of money and just had the baby at home. It sounds like the nurses/doctors didn't do much. :-) (You know I'm kidding, right? I was Miss. Induced with Epidural put in a week before labor. LOL.)

Welcome to the fam. Myles!
'bout time you had your little man. Aren't you just so relieved to be NOT pregnant? :)
and nothing like a close call, huh? My friends baby was born in the parking lot of the hospital. (in the car) Not the most sanitary place to birth. So I was happy that you insisted on walking QUICKLY to check in. :)
God Bless your new little person.
