Aug. 12, 2007 - Under foot
The other day I was a bit down about the state of cleanliness my
house has fallen into since little Myles has joined us. I was trying to get things done but was not making much progress due to the reality of now having two children under the age of two in the home (I have concluded that it's not transitioning from three kids to four that is such an adjustment as much as it is having an infant and a toddler in residence). Well, I was trying to get through my to-do list and my son was trying to help. He is a little guy full of good intentions and often I think that he is of the opinion that mom is defensless without him. It appears as if he has made it his duty to be by my side at all times just in case I need him. All this being said, somewhere during the morning I determined that NOW would be a good time for some crib play. I settled him in and returned to the next project on my list-dusting. With tools in hand I set out on my task. I made it from room to room and as I was nearing the finish line my eyes caught a glimpse of my floor lamp. If my house had been clean I would have missed it. Right there etched in the endless Central Oregon grime, was a contrast in prioraties. Symbolized by my son's footprints and the dust was the eternal and the temporal. One of my biggest struggles is trying to balance the pull of the two. On that day, I quickly finshed what I was doing and rescued my one year old to go outside and play. I figured next time instead of impressions on a dirty surface, we could make dirty footprints on my clean floor.

Aug. 15, 2007 - thanks for the wake up call!

What a *wonderful* post! I will have to remember that one when I begin to have kids. Wasn't it Martha that was busy in the kitchen while Mary sat and listened at Jesus' feet? I'm Martha. I LOVE to be clean, I love to have my HOUSE be clean and everything organized. Even my poor husband will often come inside while I'm reorganizing my kitchen, for the 233rd time, and BEG me to stop and come outside to play with him! It's HARD for me to say yes, even as "newly wed" as we are! But I'm learning that riding 3-wheelers around the house with him, and playing catch out in the front yard, is going to matter a lot more to my young, energetic husband than whether or not there are a few dishes in the sink.
thanks for that reminder! God Bless and come by my blog some time!
