Sunday, November 22, 2009 - Festive Beverage Suggestion

Miss Dog Lover has developed a festive, somewhat non-traditional beverage just in time for you to be able to serve it to your guests at Thanksgiving Dinner. That is, if you are bold enough to be first.

Last evening at snack time I walked in the kitchen to hear the iced tea she was pouring for herself making odd, non iced tea, sounds. I asked what she was doing and of course she said, "Just getting some tea."  Hmmm.

My maternal instincts went immediately to red alert. I took a closer look and listen and noticed the empty poprocks packet.

The somewhat noisy and unpredictable combination of iced Mandarin Orange Celestial Seasonings and Strawberry Poprocks was such a hit Miss Dog Lover chugged it and made herself a second.

Let me know how it goes over with your guests if you give it a go. Me? I'm wondering how it would work to add poprocks into the stuffing of the big bird before baking. Could be an explosively good Thanksgiving at our place.

Thursday, November 19, 2009 - 63% Asleep

This entry has an apologetic tone. That is because I am such a doofus.

I lay in bed this morning trying to decide if it really was warm enough to get out from under the blankets or not. During that time of semi-wakefulness, I composed three great blog entries. As soon as I got up, I jotted down enough of each idea that I'd be able to post the entry. Wonderful - I figured I was set for posts for the next week or two. As I count, that was my first mistake.

I wanted to link to my Miss Language's blog and also to her friend's. So I dutifully sent off an e-mail, making sure that was OK.  There was my second mistake.

So now, they are reminding me I have not posted yet. So I went and grabbed the list so I could spout off with this wonderful post, first of three. (Yep, third mistake and here I shall quit counting.)

I grab the list and what does it say:

black holes/FB

Outwitted/Fort Knox

type-O angels/HS

and I have almost no idea what it means.  Now, I know I should quit while I am behind, as the saying goes, but as I say, I have quit counting mistakes so here goes.

The first part (black holes/FB) had something to do with a comment I saw on Devastatingly Handsome's FB about FB being one of the biggest black holes in the universe, and then there was a comment about "what do you mean, 'one of'?" And I know that somehow I then had hold (in my semi-waking state) of a brilliant insight about the nature of black holes and I am pretty sure about whether or not relative sizes comparisons are, well, relative or not. And I think it had a tie-in with Francis Bacon. But beyond that... no idea. My great blog post was sucked away as by a black hole.

And then part two, the Outwitted/Fort Knox was going to be something beautiful and inspiring about Edwin Markham's poem "Outwitted"
He drew a circle that shut me out—
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!

and how it applies to some people we know, in particular one whose heart has been locked down tighter than Fort Knox since toddlerdom. However I know nothing about the brilliance of this post whatsoever.

And the final thing on my list (type-O angels/HS) was from a chat I had with Miss L's friend. We were talking about a matter for prayer and I thought I had the name wrong. She told me it would be ok, something like there were angels who correct type-Os (is that spelled right?) in prayers. It occurred to me that the Holy Spirit does that on a major level, not a spell checker so much as a prayer checker. But, again, I have No Idea where I was going to go with any sort of insight.

So, today's moral: my first thoughts of the day are probably not the best. Let's hope not. And even if they are, I can't hold onto them.

Nov. 16, 2009 - Reasons I Like it Here

1 Saudi people are very hospitable, generous people.

     2. Safe place for kids.

     3. The location is a great starting point for traveling and exploring this world.

     4. Great place to study the geography of the bible. It is all right here.

     .5. Great Food

      6. Saudis believe in the same God as I do. They love  Abraham, Moses, and Jesus too.

      7. We can swim eight months out of the year.

     8. Arabic is a widely spoken language in the world now and there are many opportunities to learn it here.

     9. Living here has made us focus on what is really important. It has been easier for us to set goals and reach them here.

   10. Cooking Western food is very easy here. In other countries, it has been a lot more challenging. We have a full- size oven and Western food is available to us here.

    11. The houses are big and fire-proof.

   12. The Western community comes together and really helps each other out.

   13. We get to go to parties at the embassy.

   14. We have English channels on our tv and can even watch sporting events we like, like the World Series.

    15. We can use Skype to call our family. Then, it seems like they are not so far away.

   16. I never have to change before going out because I can just throw my abaya on.

   17. Saudis have many children, so we don't have people counting us in amazement as we're walking down the street.

18. There are many inside play places for the kids.

   19. It's fun to camp out in the desert.

   20. The Gulf is very beautiful.

   21. They have many of my favorite restaurants from the U.S.

   22. Flying domestically is very cheap.

   23. Saudi Arabia is a very mysterious place and it's fun to explore it.

   24. Domestic help is cheap.

    25. It's a very fun place for 4 boys who love to dig and play in the sand.

For Today, Monday,  November 16th, 2009

Outside My Window
... there is a beautiful bright blue sky and nothing but sunshine.  We have a heavy white blanket of frost as it is only 23 degrees ~ expecting a high of 50.  Today's normal hi/low is 40/24.

I'm thinking...gotta get going...I already feel a little behind this morning as puppy's 2 am and 4 am play sessions threw off my sleeping schedule.

From the learning rooms...still need to fill out our weekly school schedule, but this should be a normal full week of getting er done.

I am thankful for...good Christ-honoring Christian hymns and songs.

From the kitchen...
M - Lasagna

T - Soup & Corn Bread
W - Chicken

TH - Roast Beef
F - Pizza
S - Chow Mein Hotdish

I am wearing...
black exercise capris, berry-colored fleecy top, sports socks, hair is in a pony.

I am reading...
Thru the Bible Each Year: OT: Ezekiel; NT: Hebrews, KJB;
Haven't had much time to read lately, but catching various articles on prophesy; Sunday School handouts on cults (our current Sunday School lesson series); and holistic dog care.

I am hoping... to have a productive day/wk.

I am creating... need to get to a good fabric store so I can make the puppet theater.  (I know, this has been up for how many weeks?).  Haven't had much time to be creative.

I am hearing... the clock tick; my fingers bang on the keyboard; Amber is getting herself some breakfast and Anna is talking to Elsa (the puppy).

Around the house & barn... well, our house was nice and clean Friday morning - sorry you missed it.  Now it will be a daily vacuuming & cleaning up around puppy area as we are tracking shredded paper all through the house.  I'm trying my best to keep the house from smelling like a pet store.

One of my favorite things... visiting with my bloggy friends.

I am going... to stay home most of the week, woohoo.

A few plans for the rest of the week (besides school)...
M - Jeff took the day off to get the final fall chores buttoned up before it gets really cold.  Today he is doing his annual moving of some of Pasture 1's fencing to make room for our sledding hill.  He also has to get the heater in the horse stock tank; store the glass picnic table under the deck; and wash the windows on main floor and basement...but...he has been asked to help with a remodeling project at church so I'm guessing the windows won't get done.  Meanwhile us girls will be doing school as usual; taking puppy out to play multiple times; laundry; mucking and perhaps riding horses -- a busy day!
T - repeat of Monday only Jeff will be at work
W - clean house; lead Awana Cubbies ~ a special Cubbie Bear Birthday Party

Nov. 16, 2009 - First Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration!

Our First Thanksgiving Dinner was Friday and it was AWESOME!  We had 40 kids from 18 families attend for a total of 60 people in attendance.  (Just a few more than the 53 Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving!)

Here is the day in pictures...

Here I am with my 2 youngest.  (Oh, come on you knew you would see me dressed like a Pilgrim at some point!  LOL  My costume was just a black shirt and skirt I had in my closet.  Then I wore one of the hats I had made and added a collar and apron made from white felt. Super simple!)

Here are some of the Indians and Pilgrims arrving.

My handsome Indian teenager!
His shirt is a white t-shirt we tea stained and then fringed the edges with scissors.  It was super easy!  (I boiled about a gallon of water and then seeped 7 tea bags until it was pretty dark.  Then I removed the tea bags and soaked the shirt for about 30 minutes.  Then I put the t-shirt through the spin cycle of the washer and ran it through the dryer.  Once it was dry we fringed the edges with scissors.  You could add beads too.)

After everyone arrived and got their hats on I spent a few minutes talking to the kids about the first Thanksgiving.  Here are some of the kids listening to me talk.
I asked them lots of questions too so they all got to tell what they know about the first thanksgiving.

Then we had a story.

The First Thanksgiving By: Linda Hayward

Here is my daughter reciting a poem she memorized as the blessing for the food.

The First Thanksgiving

When the Pilgrims

first gathered together to share
with their Indian friends
in the mild autumn air,
they lifted the voices
in jubilant praise
for the bread on the table,
the berries and maize,
for field and for forest,
for turkey and deer,
for the bountiful crops
they were blessed with that year.
They were thankful for these
as they feasted away,
and as they were thankful
we're thankful today.

She did an AWESOME job.  I was so proud of her!

The FOOD!

We had turkey, fish, deer stew, fruit, nuts, cheese, corn chowder, potatoes, cranberry salad, apple sauce, and a lot more!  Yummy!!!!

Pilgrims and Indians eating together.

Lots of yummy food!

We also played games.  Here are a few of the pilgrim girls heading out to play games.

And my WILD Indian boy!

3 Legged Races!

Corn Toss

The Turkey Shoot!

There was also a corn hunt (Similar to a egg hunt except dry corn was thrown in the grass and everyone hunted for it.) and pumpkin races where the kids pushed a pumpkin with a stick, The games were great!

And lastly we made
our craft (Which the kids LOVED and I didn't get any pictures of.) and then played Thanksgiving Jingo!

It was an awesome day.  I can't wait to do it again next year!

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

Nov. 15, 2009 - Science experiment....before lunch.

Science isn't my thing.  I'd rather....just.......not.  BUT, the silly state regs require it to be done, so we comply.

Barngirl is doing Apologia General Science (which she really likes), and this was one of the experiments she chose to do:

"Get a glass and some toilet bowl cleaner." (Really, what could go wrong with THOSE ingredients.....?)

Boil some red cabbage leaves in some water for a few minutes and pour the cooled cabbage liquid into a glass cup:
Mmmmm.  Looking good.  (Smells like dirty feet, but LOOKS nice).

Pour purple cabbage liquid into the glass, and add a teaspoon of toilet bowl cleaner.
It turns the liquid red.  The hydrochloric acid "acidifies" the liquid.

Gameboy likes to get in on the action too:

Then we add an antacid tablet to "neutralize" the acid:

And the liquid turns purple, I guess indicating the change in the chemical balance?  Actually, this was about a month ago, and I can't exactly remember all the particulars.

We then added more toilet bowl cleaner (the acid).....
So this is what is going on in my tummy during our 5-hour marathon movie nights with the girls?  Hmm.  Well, let's not read too much into this....
HEY!  This picture in NO WAY represents what we eat on movie night.  I don't even know who slipped this image onto my blog.....it's some kind of high-tech espionage....I will be lodging a formal complaint momentarily....

Well, science has been done.  CHECK!  So after I got the kids their lunch, I settled down to throw mine together.  Let's see.....add a little bacon, and VIOLA!

On second thought, maybe science isn't that bad after all.....
