Jan. 22, 2007 - Daughter off to college
Well we did it! We sent my daughter to Pensacola Florida to attend PCC! She just turned 18 and has never lived away from us so it was a melancholy feeling for sure. She has called me several times since we dropped her off, so I have a feeling I'll be hearing from her more than I ever did before!

I've been journaling every night so blogging just seems redundant, but this was such a milestone I just had to post! I did receive my new Thomas Kincade calendar for Christmas but it doesn't have any quotes on it which is a bummer, what am I going to be inspired by every day? I have started the chronological bible in one year that I read every night, so that will do!

We are excited about the homeschooling cruise we're taking this weekend out of Galveston. We're touring the Mayan ruins for 5 days! I pray it is sunny and nice weather! My husband is going with me and my 11 year old son, his first cruise! What a crazy month January has turned out to be!

Nov. 14, 2006 - Creativity isn't optional for any human being
That is another quote from my Thomas Kincade calendar. I just love it and will be dropping hints to my family to get me a 2007 one for Christmas! I think the quotes are great conversation starters that inspire me and make me ponder life which we need to do occasionally, right? I was reading a comic the other day, one of my favorite ones called, "Sally Forth," you know that one?

Anyway, the daughter is talking to a friend about what she wants for Christmas. They are reading a catalog of expensive gadgets and the one girl says to the other, "What are you gonna ask for?" She answered, "Money's kinda tight at home, so my mom and I usually make each other gifts. That's how I got into painting and writing songs in the first place." Her response was, "Wow...You just sucked all the joy out of the holiday for me." It is a reality check, isn't it? I believe we become creative when we're at our humblist (is that a word??!!). So just like another Kincade calendar quote says, "Every time you attempt to solve a problem, you're being creative."

I certainly believe the quote that creativity isn't optional for any human being. Once we forget about creativity, we've become spoiled and lose our connection to our inner self so to speak. We push it away with selfishness. Because it takes time to be creative, and we're so selfish with our time. Proof for me is the last time I blogged, it was last summer! That's too long. If I am going to stay connected with my inner self (which is being a writer) then I need to write!

What do you have in your inner self that you haven't practiced lately? Remember, all our time is free time. How we utilize our time to make the most of it is key. I never schedule time for creativity but I do think about how I can be creative in everything I do so it is a mindset. It's probably easy for me because I am a people pleaser. I love it when people tell me, "You're so creative!" because I can give the glory to God since after all, He created everything in the first place!

We are all called to "be" or "do" something. I think we all know what that is too. I challenge you to take some time this weekend to do some of what it is you were called to do. The laundry can wait! Is it photography? Go to the botanical gardens and take some pictures and put them on a slideshow as your screensaver and you'll smile every time you see them. It will remind you of your creativity, and hopefully God's beautiful creation too.

Are you an excellent thinker, therefore a great chessplayer? Dust off the old board and teach someone how to play the game. Hand down that wisdom to the next generation and you'll have made your mark on this world. Do it NOW, you'll feel better for it. It will make next Monday easier to tackle. Let me know how it goes for you!

Jul. 25, 2006 - CHEACT newsletter Info
I realized I haven't blogged since I volunteered to be the editor of the CHEACT newsletter! (Christian Home Educators of Central Texas) www.cheact.org
I've since put out three editions this year and we're working on the fourth which is a conference wrap-up. The 19th annual Home Educators Conference and book fair was recently held in Austin this past June and we're looking forward to celebrating 20 years of conferences by putting memories in upcoming editions of the CHEACT newsletter.

At the same time, I started freelance writing for the local newspaper the Pflugerville Pflag and was assigned the Religion beat (yippee!). I've since written four stories that made the front page! But my favorite interview by far is with Dr. R.C. Sproul, Jr. for the third issue of the CHEACT newsletter. The interview was about his life of course, and his passion for homeschooling. If I can figure out how to add a link to that story, I'll add it on my home page somewhere. RC (who is the son of the famous Christian speaker by the same name) is battling cancer right now and needs our prayers. The prognosis is good, but the treatments are hard on a father of seven!

My other job this year is being the information officer for our local homeschool group. I get to play around with our website (we're a closed group, so no advertising needed, word of mouth works just fine!), and organize service projects for our 10 year old and up group. We've been volunteering at the Storehouse which is an awesome Christian organization (www.the-storehouse.org).

So that's about it! Since I'm writing so much, I haven't had time to work on my novel. As a matter of fact, right now I should be on ebay selling some stamp sets that I promised to help a friend out with! But this summer (especially since we're hosting a Brazilian exchange student) I haven't found much time for any work (aw, my dh would say, must be nice!!) but I'm up to date on my scrapbooking! But now that my daughter isn't leaving for college until the spring, I want to spend as much time as possible with her. Then it's just me and the boy! Please pray for Steph as she prepares her heart for Pensacola Christian College (a place that my pastor said he wouldn't even go to because they have so many strict rules!).

Speaking of my pastor, I'm interviewing him for a story since he just got back from Israel (he's on sabbatical). He saw the bombings and has some interesting stories to tell that I am going to submit to the newspaper. Alright, this post is long enough already! Ta ta until next time.

Jun. 21, 2006 - Another Thomas Kincaid Calendar Inspired devotion

When Jesus returns

The Thomas Kincaid calendar for Easter said, “We can choose to trust that things will work out.” How true. It’s our choice. Easter has come and gone, and our hearts were either stirred by the possibility of His returning soon, or we were like the stubborn Israelites in the wilderness either ignoring it or just not seeing the hope before us.

If it’s the latter for you, maybe a picture painted from the Bible will be encouraging. Close your eyes and see before you a beautiful garden. The vibrant colors of God’s creation are breathtaking; like nothing we’ve ever seen before with our fallen eyes. Even the cosmos are aligned with perfection. The stars are twinkling with full power, and there is no need for the sun or the moon, because Jesus is the light of the world.

Work in the garden is all for the glory of God. Life is consumed with taking care of the animals, eating the right food, hand tilling the crag-free soil with gladness and joy in our hearts. There is no smog, no stressful commuting or labor, nor complaining. There isn’t any death. God walks and talks with His people and pours out his love on them for all eternity.

That is what it was like when Adam and Eve were created in the Garden of Eden. God’s intended perfection for mankind. That is what He is going to restore at His return. That is why He sent His Son. Are you ready for His power and glory to be manifest in your life? Believe on these things and renew the hope in your heart in order to be prepared for His return.

Even so Lord, come quickly!

Nov. 16, 2005 - Simply Friends

I was reading a 6 year old journal entry this weekend that brought back some memories. I used to meet with a church group of stay-at-home moms that got together to eat and fellowship along with some praise and worship, then prayer afterwards that was very encouraging I remembered at the time. But as we moms got busy, our membership dwindled down to hardly any at all. Then we just stopped meeting. I wondered why? Did our priorities change? Did we get fulfilled so quickly then moved onto bigger and better things? Of course, now that I homeschool and belong to several co-ops, we utilize them for fellowship, and I've made new friends. But so far they only relate to homeschooling-which makes me sad to think that if I ever decided to put my child in a private school that I would lose those friendships because we wouldn't have that to relate to any more. There are so many support groups out there now, like MOPS, WOF, and MITI that have almost replaced the need for fellowship in the church. One family in our homeschool group never had a church home the whole time they lived here! I think it's because we don't strengthen our ties with members because we get so specific in our clubs and groups with membership. But is that just as or maybe even more important than going to church? What scripture do you know that would help me to find out?

Oct. 8, 2005 - Restoration

I just returned from a ladies retreat and I found out there that I had some regret from my past to deal with. It has been 10 years since my husband died in a plane crash when I was 3 months along with our son (who is a beautiful 9 yo boy that I am now homeschooling!). His family has all but forgotten us and it saddens me to no end that my children have no aunts, uncles, or grandparents to look up to (mine are deceased). I remarried 5 years ago and my wonderful husband is supportive and encouraging, raising my children like they were his own. He is older, so his family is older, and they live far away. So still, no close family for my children. But two weeks ago my husbands sister, her husband, their daughter and grandson (plus two dogs and a cat!) all came to stay with us as they escaped Hurricane Rita (they are from Port Neches). We welcomed them with open arms. I let them use the master bedroom, and the pets got to stay inside. They even went to church with us! But they bickered a lot and didn't trust God as much as I hoped they would. The animals gave my dog fleas and there was hair everywhere! I became discouraged. Then, the most wonderful thing happened. My son began to get close to my sister-in-law! It was right before they went back home, but they bonded none-the-less. Then the Lord reminded me about his servant Job. That he was completely restored for his faith. He didn't get back what he had lost exactly everything the same. But he did receive a family and was restored after going thru major tragedy. It encouraged me to know that because I had always pined away for the way things were (can't you just hear Barbara Streisand singing "The Way We Were?"). But that's how the world suffers. I'm not questioning God any more! I'm accepting healing for our family (and our new family!) and trusting Christ no matter what!

Oct. 6, 2005 - All our time is free time?

The quote on my Kinkade calendar today says, "The truth is that by definition all our time is free time, ours to spend or invest as we choose." That puts it into perspective, doesn't it? Personally, I don't chart out my time hour by hour. Not being in corporate America any more, my daytimer is past history. When I tossed it out I lost 5 lbs of stress just like that! I tend to do what I like, that's why my dishes are sitting in the sink still dirty and I'm sitting on the computer! My husband would disagree, he would say that he has to work and that he'd rather be golfing. But deep down he knows how fulfilling his work is and how important it is for him to be responsibe and set an example for the children. I, on the other hand, don't have a job, but I don't feel guilty either. Homeschooling is a big part of my life, but it doesn't consume all my time. I feel writing is important, so I blog and that takes a lot of time. I cut coupons and shop for bargains in order to be a good steward and my husband definitly appreciates that! The things that I say I don't have the time for, like going to the gym, or the dentist, or reading my bible every day, are just excuses because I'd rather be doing something else for sure! I just know how to keep myself busy. If my husband stayed at home instead of working, he'd be bored within 2 hours! But like the quote states, it's all about choices. I believe the Holy Spirit convicts us when we aren't using our time wisely. And if we ignore that still small voice long enough, it will go away and we can have stress and worry lines to prove it. Ask for that voice to return today and get back on track. It's not too late to make better use of your time.

Oct. 5, 2005 - Kinkade calendar quote...

"A focal point is broader than a goal, more compelling than a priority, more fundamental than either." Kinkade's painting is a mans back standing along the side of a river fishing. He's alone, facing the beautiful waterfalls and wearing a bright red shirt which seems to be the focal point of the picture, and in a way, the focal point of the quote. The red shirts seems to scream out, look at me! I'm having fun, I'm adventuresome! When I think of focal points, I picture the clock that I stared at (my focal point for lamaze class) for over 17 hours when I was in labor with my daughter! Now the man's goal was probably to catch some fish, and whatever his priority was, it was surely lacking because some would say, maybe he should have been at work, or taking care of his family. I think his focal point was more compelling than that, more fundamental than either, the quote states. His focal point was surely to commune with nature. God's creation. Men need to be alone to commune with God. The man wouldn't have been sad if he came away without any fish. His resolve was surely to seek solace, refreshment and to reaquaint himself with tranquility, the peace that passes all understanding.

The focal point of my day always revolves around whatever subject we're homeschooling, and which co-op we're going to attend, with the goal of training my son in the way he should go, and a priority to do so! But this quote showed me that my homeschooling is just the product of my convictions, therefore my priority. My focal point should be the Lord. Having his peace, being refreshed in His Word, brings me the patience that I need to be able to homeschool, and shows me the Love that  I need to transfer to my family every day. Make it a point to focus on the Lord as your focal point every day!

Oct. 5, 2005 - Finally on the bandwagon...couponing as a good steward

I've always used coupons to grocery shop, my son helps me shop by looking at the pictures! But now I've taken it to a new level. Our church has a coupon club where we meet once a month for prayer, then swap coupons. We have an email group where we let each other know of sales and what website has good coupons to coincide with the sales for extra savings (the best help is thegrocerygame.com). Granted, it takes time to cut and organize all the coupons, but I saved 60% on my groceries last week! While my son is doing his bible reading, I can cut and organize my coupons, then we go to the store and take our calculator (to stick to our budget), and shop together for a great lesson in math!

Sep. 8, 2005 - Daily quote from Thomas Kinkade calendar

"You will gradually be tuning your heart to play a different melody." It almost sounds like a fortune cookie or horoscope (or horrorscope I call it!). But I appreciate the message, that as the seasons of our lives change, our hearts gradually change. Not abruptly, because that could be a sign that there might be a problem; from simply being unprepared to incurring a trauma. Either way, if change is not gradual, it can be traumatizing. One example I can think of is my husband leaving the house on Saturday with our Ford Expedition to get it washed. He came home six hours later with a new car! New to us anyway. It is still an '03, but thankfully had less miles on it. It is a Ford Escape (or es-ca-pay, like Dory the fish says on Finding Nemo!).

We had been talking all week about getting a smaller car to save gas, but our challenge was that we owed more on the car than what it was worth. But after finding out how much we would save in gas and mileage, it was worth it to trade it in. Not only do we get better mileage, but it costs less to fill up the tank. I am driving more now than ever with taking my son to several homeschool co-ops during the week, gymnastics, volunteering at the nursing home that my grandmother is a resident at (which is the furthest away, so we only go once a week), choir, piano lessons, and park day.

So when my husband came home with the new car (after talking to me on the phone about it several times while he was at the dealership), I was prepared to see it and embrace the change, however, my 16 yo daughter hadn't been included in all our conversations so she was a little traumatized by the change. Not knowing the car we had for over the last 2 years was about to be gone forever, gave her a little shock. Being young, she bounced back quickly. I think it also helped that she saw how we embraced the change well.

We miss the DVD player, and seating for 8. We won't be cramming our youth group into it any more! Now only 5 people fit, but our oldest has her own car now and takes herself places. At least I still have my 6 CD changer! We called our old car, "Big Red" and sang a song of good bye to it (to the tune of "Bye, bye Big Ben", the song Six Flags Arlington gave to their roller coaster that was about to be dismantled for a newer one). Our new car is called, "The Silver Bullet", or "bullet" for short. It's already become part of our family!

As we just also happen to be coming into the fall season, this season of our lives has changed as we drive a different car, or play a different melody if you will! What different  melody  are you gearing up for?  Just be sure and make it a gradual one, as to incur less stress along the way!

Sep. 1, 2005 - New daily Calendar quotes from Thomas Kinkade

I have this beautiful daily calendar of Thomas Kinkade drawings (the painter of light! check out his great website at www.thomaskinkade.com of course!) that have wonderful sayings on them every day. I couldn't think of a better way to get me to actually read them (sometimes I even forget to tear the page off for the next day!) than by posting them here. For our first year of homeschooling, my son took his learn to draw art program from Alpha Omega. It was tough, but worthwhile.

Today's message pictures a gently flowing stream with a little bit of rapids (just enough to show how our lives have bumps and curves, but it all gets smoothed out in the end) and colorful flowers on each side of it that says, "I believe a radiant, light-filled tomorrow should be normal to the expreience of living." I think it is poignant because he says "believe" instead of "wish". If only we could believe more and stop doubting what God can do for us! I love reading other blogs that tell about trials and at the end of the story give God the glory for sustaining them through it all. That is what our faith is all about! If we can't do that, then we lack it severely. So just pray and trust that He is the answer, the Light at the end of our tunnel, our Sustainer, Redeemer, Friend. You can count on Him!

Aug. 31, 2005 - Stupid Pet trick auditions

My son and I were eating lunch watching our favorite game show, Who Wants to be a Millionnaire, when a commercial came on advertising the David Letterman Show.  They were hosting local auditions for Stupid Pet and Human Tricks. It was just down the road from us, so we loaded up our talking chihuahua and went! Now, Chico doesn't travel well, so he whirled his lunch on the way, but we were prepared! My son cleaned it up as we pulled into the pet store. The local TV station was there to facilitate it and they mentioned the story was going to be on the news that night. We got there early, and there were no lines so we got to go right in. They filmed us as Chico talked right on cue. All I have to do is practice my opera and he starts to howl, then says, "Oh, no, no, no!" I guess he doesn't like my singing!

So they took our information and gave us a free bag of dog food, dog bandana, dog food bowl, some samples of snack foods, some coupons, and sent us on our way. But when we went outside my car wouldn't start. I called my husband and he said it was the battery. He had to go buy a new one and put it in. Meanwhile, we waited in the pet store and got to watch the other auditions. A man came in and drank a whole gallon of water; some red headed twin boys that were double jointed did some neat tricks, and a 15 lb. rabbit (yes, I said rabbit!) wearing an army bandana, came in on a miniature army tank to stare at everybody! I wasn't sure what his trick was!

Other contestants weren't as memorable, a cat came in that was supposed to give high fives and shake your hand, but didn't do anything. A bird dog tore up a towel to shreds, and that was about it! I thought we were a shoe-in to get on the news spot! We watched with the whole family and told all our friends, but to no avail, the top news was about the hurricane and has been for days now of course. Our story is long forgotten! But if I get a call from the David Letterman Show, I'll let ya know!

Aug. 31, 2005 - The Bryan Duncan Concert

Was so amazing! It was such an intimate setting, a perfect date night concert! Bryan was hilarious. The concert was in a small hispanic church (we're talking sqeezing to fit 300 people) in a strip shopping center in Austin. It wasn't even a full house after the concert started! Before the show, Pastor Art got up to give the testimony about how Bryan came to such a small venue. You see, the pastor's wife was listening to Bryan's CD in the car and a thought came to her, "Wouldn't it be great if Bryan could come play at our church?" Her husband said he wanted to reply, "HA! Bryan would never come to our small church AND we could never afford him." Never say never! The Lord prompted him to agree with his wife, so he did. Three weeks later, Art got a phone call from Bryan Duncan's manager asking him if he wanted to host a concert for Bryan in August. HA! Who's playing this practical joke on me? He wanted to say. But instead, he said, "I'll call you back and let you know." Then he called the California number right back, they answered the phone, "Ray Ware Artist Management" then he hung up. It was real! He told his wife, she was elated. "We have to bring him here!" He agreed. He called back again and asked how much it would cost. Too much! How much for just Bryan and not the band? Okay, now we're talking. If we cram more seats in the sanctuary and sell them at $15 each, we'll break even. They signed a contract and printed up some tickets. 10 days before the concert, he had 150 tickets left. They prayed and prayed they would sell. Art posted signs all over the place. They advertised on the radio.  Then a stranger called and asked how many tickets were left. Art told him 150. He said I'll take them all. The man wrote a check for all of them! Then he said, if people call wanting tickets, tell them it's taken care of! Praise God! Bryan came, Art had lunch with him and loved the guy immediately. So the house wasn't packed, so what? Bryan was brilliant. Afterwards we met him and took pics with him. We talked and he hung around until the last of us were gone. He even came back the next morning and led worship for Sunday church! What a guy. Go see Bryan Duncan in concert if you get a chance, it's the best date night ever!

Aug. 24, 2005 - Half way through our first week of school

What a great week so far!I'm so thankful to be starting my second year of homeschooling, it made for starting my second year so much easier! All I had to do was print out my Homeschool Journal Outline to get started (you can email me and I will send you the MS Word file if you want to see it!).

SCHEDULE
I had to make a few adjustments to our schedule but it was mostly the same...Math, Spelling, Bible & Reading Detective on Mon-Wed-Fri, and History, Science, Astronomy & Health on Tuesday-Friday. We spend 30 minutes on each subject so we start at 9 am and take a break for a snack around 10:30. Our goal is to be finished by noon (or sometimes 11:30 when we have extra curricular activites).

MONDAY
Starting up again was a major disctration, we missed our piano lesson! It's hard when I still have to pay for it, plus not get to make it up because we didn't give notice we were going to miss! But that's water under the bridge now. We also had a little problem with homework. I like to give one extra page per subject on Mondays and Wednesdays but my son decided to play a board game with a friend before finishing like he was told.
I had to ground him from tv for the rest of the week.That only means he can't watch Arthur and Miayah & Miguel on PBS because those are the only two shows he watches! But he also watches his videos a lot so we're going to use the extra time to practice piano and choir. He's learning hand signals to the scale;
Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do!

TUESDAY
Lesson learned, we have a big bold schedule on the dry erase board and made sure to not miss our first choir lesson on Tuesday! My son actually enjoyed it too! He was dreading it, but I knew he would like it! That evening we talked at the dinner table about our first two days of homeschool and after washing up we all played cards as a family until bedtime!

WEDNESDAY
Today is gymnastics which my son loves! Then we head for the nursing home to help with bingo and be with my grandmother. She has a whole list of things she needs for us to bring; kleenex, nose drops, diapers (man those Depends are expensive!). My son has already wrapped up his lessons and is practicing the piano. It's so neat to see him use both hands playing Mary had a little lamb! Tonight I will hopefully have time to write on my novel while my daughter goes to work at Taco Bell and my son and husband practice baseball.

THURSDAY
We look forward to tomorrow where we have no afternoon extra curricular activities so we can stay home and get the house in order. Before dinner, me and my DH have our time together to do our marriage study at the coffee shop after our Chiropractor appt every Thursday, then I head off to church for women's prayer. My 16 yo daughter stays home with my son during that time and they play cards mostly or take the dog for a walk or ride their bikes when it's not too hot!

FRIDAY
Friday is the busiest day of the week! I'm sure I will hardly ever have time to blog on that day! In Sept. we'll start up the CBS (community bible study) co-op in the mornings, then the afternoons we'll either head out to the homeschool skate at the skating rink, or go bowling. The sprinkler park is always an option too since it's out that way as well. Gas is so expensive as we all know, so we're trying to utilize our travels as much as possible! Friday nights are also mine and my husband's date night. We usually go to Bennigan's to play trivia and I always have a coupon from the Valpack for our dinner!

WRAP-UP
That's our week! It's so nice to have it all journaled here and save money on paper plus not having to store it all, our bookshelves are crammed full as it is! It's time for me to check my sons papers. He already made a 100% on his first math test, but will he do so well on penmanship????

Aug. 22, 2005 - Last summer fun evening at the ballpark

We took all six of our free tickets and a handful of friends out to see the Round Rock Express win last night but the best part was my homeschooled, baseball loving son got to play in the Junior Olympics! His opponent was his age but a bigger kid, so we knew he didn't have a chance, but getting to run around the bases on the big field was his dream so he didn't care about losing at all!

When we arrived at the ball park we talked our friends into signing up for the Junior Olympics, which was my sons best friend Matthew and his dad Lohn. The dads weren't too excited because they asked them to finish the race from third to home as a sack race! I knew my dh could wrap it up, he's much quicker and in better shape than the other dad, but things didn't turn out the way we planned when race time came around after the 3rd inning.

First, we were surprised they called both boys names; surely they weren't the only ones that entered the contest! Erik and Matthew were so extatic to hear their names and see them on the jumbo tron! My husband Ken and Lohn however, weren't as happy! They took the boys down nevertheless.

Being kid's night at the ball park (they all got great free backpacks, what a blessing!), all the different mascots from around the city were there; the HEB buddy, Fang from the Ice Bats, etc... (a big yellow bird kept attacking my friend Xylena that came with us, they did the chicken dance together!).

So, apparantly all the dad's had to do was sign a release form, because two of the mascots (I forget who) did the sack racing for the last leg instead of the dads; much to my chagrin. My son didn't get a good start, so rounding second he was lagging behind but smiling big! Then the tag to the mascot didn't go well so thank goodness he already had the sack on ready to go. They didn't have far to go but Matthew's mascot won it by a nose (a big one too I might add!). Both the boys got great t-shirts and Matthew got a Nike watch for winning.

On top of that, plus all the home runs, broken bats, people catching foul balls right next to us, AND t-shirts that were flung near us, big yellow dancing birds; it made such a fun evening out at the ballpark, we recommend it to everyone before their summer is "officially" over!

Aug. 19, 2005 - Got the extra curriculars down!

We haven't officially started school yet. With only one student, if we get started early, then we'll finish too early! Especially the Math-U-See. My son just whizzes through it. It helps that he loves and excels in math. We're doing Delta this year.

We signed up for the choir, cub scouts, and have been taking piano lessons. My son is not excited about choir because he is shy, but he sings so loud in the car and he knows the words to every song on the radio (Klove) so I think he'll do fine. We're taking a free art lesson at church this weekend to see if we like the program called Young Rembrandts. If so, we'll sign up to take that class at the recreation center.

On Tuesdays we're headed for Calvary Chapel to attend their HS co-op. The kids are taking science I believe, plus a Crown Financial course! Us ladies will be using the Tyndale 1 year bible for our study. On Friday's we'll be at CBS (community bible study) for my son and I both to study the word.

Oh, we're still helping out at the nursing home. Every other Wednesday we'll attend park day, then when we don't, we'll still help out with Bingo in Georgetown. We're going to start up a game of our own on Thursdays and probably play pokeno. It's my grandmother's favorite!

Erik already started gymnastics and its a small class so far. He's getting some great instruction from the manager himself! I actually still have time to get to the gym to workout myself on Mon-Wed-Fri mornings. Erik has to take work in with him to the kids play room which he hates since they have video games. I let him play one game after he finishes each subject and he does great!

Well...we're off to the gym now, then it's clean house day! It's a busy weekend, two birthday parties; my step-daughter and a 60 year old friend which will be a fun gag gift party, then Saturday night we have our monthly domino game with three other couples from our church (I'm not winning this year! but my DH is doing well) and Sunday night it's another night out at the ballpark to see the Round Rock Express! Have a great weekend yourself! God bless, Cathy :-)

Jul. 28, 2005 - Fun at the Ball Park

Last night was such fun at the Dell Diamond! When a friend of mine gave our family four free tickets to see the Round Rock Express, we quickly found their schedule for their next home game. Little did we know that a lazy Tuesday night would turn into the time of our lives! Okay, maybe not our lives (His return will be the best of course!), but when we signed up to participate in the nights activities (along with 10,000 other people) we certainly didn't expect them to call on us!

First my name got called for the dizzy bat race. They posted it up on the Jumbo tron, it was such a shock! Me and another girl (my younger competition!) had to go down on the field and race for a t-shirt. The hitch was, we had to spin our heads around a bat 10 times first! It made me soooo dizzy! The mascot, in a big dog costume, had to help me along! Needless to say, I didn't make it half way for staggering around! I told them they should have just given the shirt to her!

Then as we were done, I heard my daughter's name get called for the "Gong Show" during the 7th inning stretch. It was sponsered by Shoe Carnival so they gave her a t-shirt and a $10 gift certificate!  I didn't receive anything for my antics, but that's besides the point! Anyway, my daughter was in shock because I was the one that signed her up, she didn't have a clue what she was supposed to do! They told her that she was going to sing acapella any song she wanted for 30 seconds. They would either gong her or cheer her on.

So they gave her a microphone, put a huge camera in her face and told her to stand on top of the dugout. The announcer asked her, what are you going to sing? She said, "I feel like a woman" (she was influenced by Carrie Underwood from American Idol). The announcer said, "I bet you do!" So she sang, and she was awesome! I was sooooo proud of her. It surely made up for the fool I just made out of myself doing the dizzy bat race! She was cheered on by the crowd and sang for the entire 30 seconds with nary a boo.

Walking back to our seats she was recognized by all (the bright orange Shoe Carnival t-shirt she was wearing gave her away) with pats on the back and "Good job" being told to her. I guess her days on the worship team at youth on Sunday nights paid off! She loves to sing of course, and is eager to try out for AI when they come to town for next seasons show.

Before the night ended we went to the gift shop and the lady working there recognized us. My husband jokingly said that it wasn't fair that I didn't even get a prize for making a fool out of myself in front of 10,000 people in the dizzy bat race so the lady gave us 4 commemorative Express pewter key chains! That was very nice of her, but I would have done it anyway, just so my family (and 10,000 of our closest friends) could have a laugh at my expense!

Jul. 28, 2005 - Lord's Room Curriculum

The Lord's Room Homeschool

In the Lord's Room Homeschool there is only one student, my 9 yo son, but very influenced by the goings on is my 16 yo daughter who is about to enter her senior year this fall (she skipped kindergarten). She is bravely finishing out her public schooling, but I couldn't have done it without Mom's In Touch (see momsintouch.org).

My son (nicknamed little E, because my older step-son in the Marines has the same name, so he is big E) is a very well behaved boy that is smart (okay, I'm biased but if you ask my friends they would tell you the same!) and loveable. He requires at least 10 hugs a day! He loves building with legos and spent time last spring in a lego robotics group with the Austin Metro Gifted Homeschool group. He also loves playing Zelda on his Nintendo 64.

His strong suit is math (we use Math-U-See) so he takes after his father who got his degree in math at A&M. (read the story about little E's late father in the story "This is the Day" in the book "Encounters with God" on the shelves at Family Christian Stores.)

We're studying Astronomy using the Exploring Creation Young Explorer Series (purchased from THSS, check out their website at www.thehomeschoolsource.com) which is so exciting in these days and times with Mars coming so close. It's God's providence! On the days we're not doing Astronomy, we work on Science and Health, Safety & Manners by Abeka. Last spring we held a weekly Science Fun workshop in our home with 6 students. We did experiments from the Science Fun book and had a blast! Hopefully we'll do it again next spring.

Then there's spelling, handwriting and reading which my son does well but doesn't prefer them (my daughter and I are the journalists in the family). We use McGraw Hill for those except the handwriting which is Abeka. We're big supporters of them especially since my daughter will be going to college there (Pensacola Christian College) next fall! She is busy working her first job right now at Taco Bell and driving her new car (it's 10 years old actally!) that my grandmother bought her. She writes for her school newspaper and wants to be a photographer.

This summer we have kept busy volunteering at the nursing home where my grandmother is a resident in Georgetown. We helped with Bingo yesterday, there were over 40 residents playing. They said it was their biggest crowd this summer. My son is a great helper and the elderly there love seeing him. My daughter helps also when she isn't working at TB. We also decorate the bulletin boards and help with the sing along in the chapel.

When my son is on the Nintendo and my daughter is sleeping in, I'm on the computer of course! But I worked on my bible study before turning it on this morning so I could get my daily does of Him. We are doing an awesome study on Jonah in our women's group by Precept Ministries. This fall my son and I will be in CBS (Central Bible Study) where we will both get bible lessons that we very much look forward to, especially meeting new people too.

When I'm not blogging I'm on ebay selling whatever is lying around that I'm not using (my ID is CLW4 if you wanna check it out!). Lately it's been my stamping collection (collecting dust more like it!). Ever since my grandmother moved here from Oklahoma I haven't been very creative! I guess it's time for a new season in my life. As long as the Lord uses my talents for His glory (now volunteering at the nursing home) then I am at peace! I also sell for others to make a little extra money on the side.

On M-W-F we go to the gym, our whole family has a membership. We keep in shape and work out, but my son is too young to join so he goes to the kids room. For him to keep in shape, he goes to a homeschool gymnastics group at AcroTex. They are wonderful Christian people there. I am signing little E up for choir this fall at the Christian Chorale Society and he's taking piano lessons from our associate pastor at our church! Little E is also a treasure keeper member at our church where he memorizes scriptures and gets ribbons and prizes. They are good to remind him that the best prize he will ever receive is heaven!

I am off now to go help with worship at the nursing home. On Thursdays they have chapel and it takes 30 minutes to wheel everyone in from each wing of the building, it's a big place! Tomorrow is clean house day, so no time to blog until Monday!

Jul. 18, 2005 - Blogging just makes me want to write more!

I love to write!! I am offended at the remarks the news is making about bloggers saying too much about themselves and that we are just wanna be writers that couldn't make it in the real world of writing. I have a friend that has fibromialgia (sp?) and she was encouraged to journal everyday by her doctor! It is theraputic for us to blog! Open communication is healthy for the soul. I do think we need to be careful about sharing too much for the world to see, but it is nice to know that people can post a comment to encourage instead of condemn on this homeschool blog. I'm very thankful to homeschool blogger.com!

Jun. 30, 2005 - It can only get better...

I thought I was going to drown in my daily to-do list but have found a great relief in my faith! Never once did I NOT trust that God was going to take care of us as I had to put my grandmother in a nursing home, purchase a car for my 16 yo, all the while taking my son back and forth to baseball camp AND THAT WAS JUST TUESDAY!

And I was worried about getting some homeschooling in, guess what my son learned this week? To wear sunscreen and a white t-shirt and drink lots of water when outdoors! And he learned to trust in God because again our prayers were answered...he left his wallet at the skating rink last week with his $20 in it from our garage sale and someone returned it with the $20 still inside, praise God!

My busy week isn't over yet... I finally got Grandma a new phone number and now she wants a new chair delivered to the nursing home in the morning (by your's truly, not UPS) and tomorrow my ebay auctions will be over (I promised a friend I'd sell some things for her in exchange for 30% of the profits... I've gotta make money some how!). Then we're trekking it to Dallas for the Celebrate Freedom concert at Southfork Ranch this Saturday.

Now it's time to play Rummy with my son while my daughter is off at work at Taco Bell (first job!) and my husband is out umpiring a little league baseball game. The dishes aren't done and there's laundry to do, but I've got my priorities! A mom's work is never done...
