A face only a momma could love

I had to share this picture of our younger daughter Abby after her mud bath!  Or should I say her fall into the mud pit that the boys have designed in our back yard.  Of course, we told her to stay away from the large, water-filled hole.  Do you think that she listened to wise counsel?

Notice that big brother is sporting a life jacket.  That is because the mud pit has grown.  Not only in size but location.  Here's the new and improved mud pit.  The boys have corrected me and let me know that it is not a mud pit but a nice little fish pond for our backyard.  mmmm...ok...

Does anyone else have children or husbands who like to change around the parts of bikes and whatnot to create frankenstein items like the above bicycle?

Unfortunately for the boys but good for property values, the hole was filled in with dirt and planted with grass last weekend.  Our house will go on the market soon (hopefully) and we thought we would let the new owners decide where to place their own mud pit fish pond.

You have probably all ready figured this out...

I'm a bit wishy washy with this blog thing.  Annoying, I know.  I really am coming back to blogging especially now that my camera is up and running.  I have so many pictures to share.

I see my last blog was in October. Well,  a few weeks after that post, I started feeling really yucky and didn't feel like blogging.  After trying to figure out what was ailing me, I decided to take a pregnancy test.  Yes, you guessed it.  We are expecting blessing number 5 at our house.  You would think that having done this 4 other times that I could figure out what is going on.  But I'm slow like that!  Anyway, we are so excited to be expecting again.  We are due sometime in July.

I was once again plagued with all day morning sickness and spent a few weeks in December just lying as still as possible on the couch.  I am happy to say that the morning sickness is now just in the PM hours.  So I guess that would be evening sickness.  Anyway, the yuckies have kept me away from the blog and pretty much everything else that could be put off for a while.

So that is what's been going on.  School is going well and I will hopefully soon get some posts about our schooling with Weaver and just general family things soon!

Big changes at W.C.A

I really don’t want to say this too loud.  You see, everytime I speak of how well our home school is going, the whole thing falls apart.  Maybe if I whisper it, the Murphy’s law thing won’t hear me.  Our home school is going really well this year.  Actually, it has been great!  Ok, I said it.  Hopefully tomorrow will not be one of those “what were we thinking when we decided to home school” kind of days.  I don’t know, maybe I’m the only one who has those kind of days.  Though I will say they are few and far between compared to our first year of home school.

We have made many changes this school year and it’s just been great.  Really!  I won’t bore you with all of the details of curriculum this and that.  Unless you ask me, that is…But I do want to tell you about two changes we have made that have made all of the difference in the world.

Our first change has been a mommy attitude change.  If you read my profile, you will see that I am a former public school teacher.  I don’t want to offend anyone who reads this who is a teacher.  Some of my dearest friends and family members are fantastic teachers who give of themselves daily to do a hard job.  But it took me two years to realize that home school is totally different that public school or any school for that matter.  I can not do our school at home like I would do in my classroom.  It does not work for us.  I tried and we were all miserable.  I have relaxed quite a bit and our school is so successful and fun right now that I am quite giddy.  My children want to do school and read.  We have not seen this kind of motivation and excitement these past two years.  My oldest son, B, got so excited today when he figured out a hard math problem that he was jumping up and down in excitement.  Man!  That gets me just downright giddy!

After changing my attitude, I took a look at possible curriculum changes.  I made changes across the board, for the most part.  But the biggest change was us starting The Weaver curriculum.

This summer, a friend was telling me that she bought this unit study curriculum that had similar objectives for all grade levels with slight differences for each level.  She let me look over it for a few weeks because I like to buy very few things sight unseen.  At first, I thought “no way” as I studied it.  I gave it back to her and then I asked to see it again.  This time I really studied it.  I mapped out a 3 week unit. I read through every unit in the entire HUGE binder, seriously… After much discussion with my husband and pages of notes comparing The Weaver to many other curricula, I decided to order it.  It has not been a disappointment yet!  We love it!  I know, I know…too many exclamation points.  It’s just that good.

So these two changes have made a world of difference in our home school.  We are happy and I can not believe that we didn’t start doing this 5 years ago when our oldest started school.

What is W.C.A?

This is just a little note for my parents and friends who read this blog.  Since we signed up as a private school this year, we had to name our school.  Being the creative individuals that we are, ahem...we named it (insert our last name here) Christian Academy.  I really don't want my last name on the internet so we call it WCA for short.

Just wanted to let you know that!

Hello, hello, hello...

Ok, that was supposed to mimic an echo in this dusty old blog.  I disappeared quite abruptly due to a lot of personal issues that needed to be worked out in my life.  It's been a few good months and a time of discovery for me.

Anyway,  I believe that I'm coming back to blogging. That sounded very noncommittal, huh?   My goal for this blog will be to have a way to document our school life and to share it with our families.  We have been having a great school year and using great curriculum that has been an answered prayer for this stressed out mom.  Not to mention, I have tons of pictures to share.  Once I remember how to do picture posting, that is.

However, I do not have time to do that today.  We spent the day on a 900 acre farm and came home exhausted.  Now I'm off to pick up a messy house and prepare for Sunday morning.  I hope to be back in the near future.

Our summer in pictures

Here's our summer in photos.  Well for the times that I remember to pull out the camera, that is.  I'm so bad about that.

Fourth of July weekend at the lake.

Everyone loves hanging out with sunshine girl.

Big brothers are sooooo funny.

In this picture, I was cleaning the kitchen and sunshine girl was fussing.  It got rather quiet and I turned to find big brother sweetly singing to her.  Ahhhh...so sweet!

Petting the kitty during diaper change.

You think she is embarassed here?  Sunday dress over hula skirt with big brother's boots...interesting...

Ems acting out her favorite line from Bambi 2.  "And he's got these eyes."  This said in her best Thumper-like voice.

And that's it.  Not a lot this summer but vacation is coming up and I'm sure we'll have more then!

Finally! Time to blog

Wow!  Our life has been an amazing but busy ride lately!  I have had no time to blog and here I sit on a Sunday morning of all days!  My baby girl is sick this morning with a cold and she is still asleep!  Dave and the big kids are at church.  I don't know what to do!  Just kidding!  I thought that I'd jump on here and catch up a bit on our goings-on.

Home school is going GREAT!  I really mean, fantastically great.  I'm so glad that we toughed out last year and didn't give up and go back to public school.  After spending all summer poring over curriculum catalogs and praying for guidance, we are very pleased with our curricula.  The only change we are going to make is to math.  We are currently doing Miquon Math and it's just not a good fit for us.  So we are going back to Horizons for now until we can find one that fits us better.  Our greatest find this year so far is Calculadders.  I was very skeptical at first but it is such an effective program.  It is a timed math drill program.  My younger son does  2 minutes of addition drill and my older son does 4 minutes of multiplication drill.  They were a bit overwhelmed by the number of problems on the page at first but I've convinced them that you can do anything for 2 (4) minutes.  That's such a small fragment of time.  They truly love it now and ask me daily if it is time to do the timed test AND they are learning their facts!  Too cool!

On to non-homeschool stuff...

My older daughter is potty trained!  She, just like her older brothers, decided one day that was the day she would do it.  There's been no looking back.  She's even night trained!  Way to go Emma!  I don't know what I was so uptight about!

My younger daughter is such a joy to our family.  She is the happiest baby in the world, hands down.  Honestly, I'm not bragging.  I've just never seen such an incredibly happy baby.  She lights up our home and the big kids adore her.  We are so thankful to God for blessing us with such a sweet, happy, loving child.  She's now rolling over both ways and loves to "talk" to us.

The boys are keeping me busy.  Usually I have a rule that each child is only involved in one extracurricular activity a semester.  Of course, that rule was imposed when we were in public school.  So now we are going quite a bit.  I may have to go back to our rule of only one activity.  We'll see how it goes...  My older son will begin fencing tomorrow.  This is through our homeschool group.  He is so excited about that.  He and my younger son will begin a group on Tuesday that is similiar to Boy Scouts but is a homeschool group.  Those two activities are only 2 weeks a month.  My younger son and older daughter are taking  gymnastics classes.  My husband was a gymnast and these two love to do tricks with him on the trampoline.  We leave from gymnastics class on Wednesday and go home for an hour.  Then we head out the door to RAs and Mission Friends at church.  Busy, busy, busy.  I am a bit of homebody so this going a lot stresses me out a bit.  I also know that some people don't agree with all of this going.  I look at it this way, my children are home with me all day, everyday.  They want to be out participating in activities with other children.  They want to spread their wings.  I want them to spread their wings. All of these activities are done under the watchful eye of me or my husband.  So I'm ok with all of the going even though I love to be at home.

The baby is still asleep, poor thing...

In less than two weeks, we are leaving to go on our vacation.  We are loading into an RV with my parents and heading north to colonial Williamsburg.  I have never been this far north.  However, I was recently informed that Virginia is still considered the south.  I guess when you live in Louisiana, anything above Arkansas seems like the north!  We are super excited about our trip though I don't know what to expect weather wise.  We are trying to pack lightly but we deep south people get cold easily since we're not used to the cold! (Cold to us is 50 degrees...just joking!) I'm thinking short sleeve shirts and take jackets and sweaters in case it's cooler than we are used to.  I don't know.

Well, that was long update and I'm sure quite boring.  I am by no means interesting but I want to document for my friends & family who do read this.  Have a blessed Lord's Day!

First week in review

Homeschooling is going really well considering that our curriculum is not in yet.  I ordered from Rainbow Resources and I have a feeling that we hit the homeschool rush.  But that's ok.  We've been reviewing using some of our unfinished curriculum from last year.  The only new thing that we're doing is using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.  While I'm doing that with my younger son, my 3yod is hanging out and repeating every thing that we say!  I wonder if she will be an early reader?!

Homeschooling is going well but my housework is falling behind again.  I will openly admit that I have not figured out how to do school and keep house yet.  In good time...

Yesterday was our first day of gymnastics.  My 6yos and 3yod are both taking classes.  The only day that we could find open classes that overlapped without a big time gap was Wednesdays.  When we start mission classes again at church in September,  for which I am one of the teachers, we will be leaving straight from gymnastics and going to church.  I will have choir practice after that.  So Wednesdays will be leave the house at 3:00 and I will get home at 9:30!

Back to gymnastics, the kids had a blast!  My son was so brave and jumped right in and participated.  My boys tend to be a bit shy so that's a very big thing.  My 3yod was scared to go down the big slide from the observation deck but once she got into her area, watch out!  She had so much fun.  She flitted all over the place (even when she wasn't supposed to) so I can see where this is going to teach her a little discipline.

Tonight is our first homeschool group meeting.  I am going to be meeting some new to homeschool people who are involved in our church there.  I now have two families to find support in from our church.  I was feeling quite lonely there for a while.  I love the church we go to.  The people are some of the most loving people that I know.  But there's not a lot who understand homeschooling or our reasons for it, etc.  But you know what, I was there once myself...but that's another story!

Off to get ready for the meeting and then Praise Team practice.  Another late night for me!

I did it again!

So I did it again!  I disappeared!   My last posts were of my daily to do lists and then ~poof~ nothing.  But I have a 3 month old who doesn't like naps and a three year old who wails very loudly when she misses hers but depends on Mommy to get her to sleep. (Try to get a 3yo to sleep while caring for a baby who doesn't. Ugh!) So I have very little blog time.  Right now, baby girl lies on a pallet at my feet and I can't guarantee you that I'll be able to finish this sentence!

In the midst of all of the adjusting to a baby in our family, we decided to start school today.  Today was the first day for public school in our parish and while I know of home school parents who purposefully don't do school on days such as today, we all were ready to begin.  We had spent much of the summer on a light schedule but took the last three weeks off.  Let me just tell you, that my kids were in great need of a school routine again!  Not to mention, I am a former public school teacher and some habits are hard to break!

So we started our morning with great anticipation and excitement over the new things we were going to do today and this year.  My three year old had her basket of activities and some lessons to complete herself.  It went so well...for about 2 hours and then it fell. to. pieces.  I just have trouble keeping 3yodd occupied and out of trouble while at the same time keeping her older brothers from trying to do her activities which makes her scream like a banshee that they have touched HER school stuff...

But we made it through and I have the highest hopes that it will get better if we just persevere.

The baby, on the other hand, who most people thought would be the biggest obstacle to home schooling, was a doll.  She giggled at the boys while I  held her in my lap and worked with them.  Hopefully, when she's older and more mobile, it will still go as well.

Ok, my non-napping baby is fussing and needs a little attention.

Tuesday's to do list

I’m going to post my to do list for Tuesday since I don’t have much time in the mornings to post.  I’m usually on the computer but I’m nak and can’t do the one handed type!

·        After baby nurses, I will get up, shower, do makeup & hair.  Take my supplements (for milk supply) and read the Bible while I drink my soda (I know bad, bad but I don’t do coffee.  This is my vice that I hope to break in the future).

·        Make breakfast for the kids and myself. (Put a load of clothes on the wash while this is going on.  Wash the permanent press clothes.) Dave will eat if he is still home.  It’s hard to be consistent because our early morning nursing sessions are not consistent yet.  Nurse baby again.

·        Clean kitchen and put clothes in dryer/wash new load.

·        Clean refrigerator and make new batch of sour dough starter.

·        Clean main bathroom and declutter main bathroom linen closet for 15 minutes.

·        Work on Math and Reading with younger son (We are reviewing)

·        Make & Eat lunch.  Take supplements.  Switch laundry/Wash new load.

·        The above may be a bit ambitious for right now.  I know, you’re thinking that it doesn’t look like much but it may be interrupted with nursing sessions here and there.  I struggle with low milk supply and we’ve had a busy weekend so it seems a little down.  Not to mention we are about to hit a growth spurt.

·        Clean kitchen.

·        Get everyone down for quiet time.  I fold clothes.

·        Let the kids paint or do some art and craft project.  If it’s not hot, we go outside but it’s over 100 degrees here right now with humidity.  Too hot!

·        Our evening will be a little different today than normal since I will be going to play Bunco tonight.  Dave will hang out and do his daddy thing with the kids.  They love daddy nights.

·        Come home, nurse my baby, read and go to bed.

Hopefully I’ll get this done.  I know it doesn’t look like much compared to most people’s days but for us, it’s a great undertaking until the baby is more content without Mommy.  But you know what, I’ll take my baby time and my house can wait!

Monday's to do list

Candy at Keeping the Home is calling for readers of her site to post their daily to-do lists.  Since I’ve been having problems with the keeping of my home since Abby’s birth, I decided to join in for a little motivation.  Most people are listing their lists on her site or linking to their blogs, but I’m kind of shy about stuff like that so I’m just going to post it here for me.

Today was kind of off kilter because my oldest son went to church camp and we spent the morning getting everyone ready and driving to camp.  Dave took a half a day to help me since the baby does not care for the car seat too much and me carrying the baby and luggage into the dormitory would have been funny.  Anyway, we didn’t get home until after 4:00.  The house was a disaster because Mondays are usually the worst day around here after a busy weekend and we were trying to get out the door on time this morning.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

·        Decluttered master bedroom and bathroom

·        Washed diapers

·        Swept and mopped the floors (HUGE undertaking because this is the entire house)

What I still need to do:

·        Clean kitchen and mop the floor in there

·        Get self ready for bed

·        Of course, nurse the baby

·        Read my Bible and work on curriculum order

My wonderfully helpful husband has also helped out a lot today.  He held the baby when I was busy and needed to do things.  He also folded and put away some clothes that were not finished on Friday.  (Like I said, I’ve had a hard time getting things done here lately.  The baby likes to be held a lot!)  He cooked supper because I was in the middle of getting the floors done.

That’s our day.  It was a good one and the house smells so good since the floors are clean now.  We do miss our oldest son quite a bit tonight though.  It’s always strange when someone is gone!  Hopefully I’ll get a lot done tomorrow as I’m hoping that having my list posted will help me stay motivated.  Of course, a lot depends on my darling little baby who wants nothing more than to be in her mommy’s arms!

Long time, no blog...

It's been a whole month since I've blogged!  Having a new baby in the house has kept me from being here much.  I've checked blogs here and there but usually had my hands too full to type my own!  However, we are starting to get into a groove around here.  I'm still not able to accomplish much more than cooking, washing the dishes and washing the clothes.  But I figure that I've got the basics covered there. We're fed and clothed...everyone's happy...

So here's what's been happening in our neck of the woods...

Homeschooling - We've been doing our math 4 days a week and reading various books from our large collection and the library.  I think that I've finally nailed down our curriculum decisions for the next year and will soon be ordering.  I've changed my mind somewhat from what I previously listed here.  I'll post what we're using once I've ordered it because its apt to change again.

The Kiddos -  Everyone's doing well.  The boys have been going to Terrific Tuesdays at church and having a good time. While there, they've done crafts, learned Bible stories and other various activities such as boat races, water games and a trip to the zoo.  They've gone fishing with their PawPaw  T. and Uncle.  Big Little Sister is trying to learn going to the potty which is not going well at all.  And everyone says that girls are easier.  Well, they've never met Emma either.  She is just a little stubborn about the whole process and I'm personally very frustrated with it right now.  That's another post for another time.  Baby Sister is growing after our previous worries  and concerns.  At our 2 month doctor visit last week, she was at 11 pounds 14 ounces.  We are still having to supplement with formula due to low milk supply but she only receives 6 - 8 ounces a day, mainly in the evening.  She gives us a lot of smiles and giggles and is an all around happy baby.

Sorry no pictures.  I'm not able to resize them right now because that option was a temporary feature on the photo program that we were using.  I'll probably purchase it because I really like to post my pictures.

Vacations - Dave, Abby and I just returned from a little vacation to the mountains.  It was to celebrate our 10 year anniversary.  We had a good time hiking and hanging out in our room watching TV.  Yes, we really did lay around and watch TV.  Yes, we really did enjoy it!  This weekend, we are taking a short vacation with my parents in their RV at a lake.  We actually won't go out and meet them until Monday and spend the 4th with them.  Our big vacation is coming in September.  My parents are taking us to Williamsburg with them.  We are super excited about this trip!

So that's our summer so far in a nutshell!

Happy Birthday Emma Grace!

Happy 3rd Birthday to our baby girl, Emma Grace!

It’s hard to believe that 3 years ago today at 7:43 am, we had our first baby girl come into this world.  You came into the world with gusto and you still do everything with that same gusto!  You lit up the hospital with you specialness, and honey, you still do that everywhere you go.  You are a blessing and a blessed child also.  Love you bunches!

Update

Well, my girl is finally past her birth weight!  Woohoo!  She weighed in at 8 lb 12 oz today.  So the formula helped us get up over the weight problem but weaning off of it is not that easy!  We're at 6 oz a day and tomorrow we will be going to 5 oz a day.

School is going well.  Almost over.  And I'm so ready for a little not-so-structured time.  We have 5 days and counting.  We will continue to do Math during the summer and we've got some reading lists that we are going to peruse.  Of course, we'll take field trips but that's about it.

I'm still waiting on my cloth diapers.  They were backordered because of the prorap covers.  This also means that I'm still waiting for the milkmaid tea and I'm drinking the yucky stuff that I have until that comes in.  Actually, I'm drinking it as we speak!  ~Grimace~  I'm expecting it to be shipped out this week.

Mother's day was good.  Abby and I went to church that morning for the first time since her birth.  I did not get to be with my Mom but I was with her the weekend before.  My Mom is awesome, by the way. Mother's Day was hard for her as the loss of my brother is so painful for her especially on holidays.  I wanted to be with her but she was actually not home that day!  And I live about 2 hours away.  My Mom is the greatest, though.  I have had to go to her with some tough stuff when I was younger.  My Mom amazed me that she never sat in judgement of me.  She just stayed by my side when everyone else abandoned me.  That still amazes me today!  She is just one of the most generous people that I know.  She has been there for me in so many ways that I can not even begin to name them.  I hope to be the kind of mother that she is.

My gift for Mother's Day was some bareMinerals makeup which I've been wanting for a while.  We are trying to live healthier lifestyles and get chemicals and such out of our home.  This was one way that I wanted to help!  ~wink, wink~  Anyway, I'm still waiting for my order to come in.  Hopefully soon!

One last note in this update, we decided to sell our house.  It is too small for us.  Way TOO small.  We are going to get that going and we are going to get our homestead.  We've been wanting for a while to have a little homestead since we both love to garden and such.  So we hope to be in our new home on our homestead by Christmas!  Hopefully sooner.

Leaving with some Mother's Day pictures.

Shortly after this picture, Dave snapped this one that shows what life if really like in these parts...

Cloth Diapers

Well, I just ordered our infant sized cloth diapers from Cotton Babies.  I'm super excited!  I ordered 24 infant unbleached chinese prefolds, 3 small sized proraps covers, 2 newborn proraps, 1 Kissaluvs contours - newborn/small (to try it out), Milk Maid Tea and a pink snappi because the ones I have are blue!  I'm not sure about the size of the proraps but may order some more after I see what size we need.  I'd love some AIOs but got to go for economy here!

Ok, I need to go straighten up the house.  One of my choir buddies is going to stop by the house to see the baby and bring us a meal in about 20 minutes.  I need to do a little picking up.  TTFN.  Isn't that what Tigger says?

She gained weight!

Yay!  She gained weight!  Unfortunately, it took some formula but he wants us to wean off of that.  We go back next week to see if she is still gaining.  So  here's the stats:

Birth weight 8 lb 7 oz,

Leaving hospital  7 lb 4 oz

          2 days later 7 lb 10 oz

Next day  7 lb 8 oz  (jaundice got us here!)

Then back up to 7 lb 10 oz and stayed there for a week with no weight gain.

Now she's up to 8 lb 1oz and 21 inches.  She was 19 inches at birth.

I'm so excited!  I got some Red Raspberry Leaf supplements today which are supposed to make a richer milk.  I'm still taking my other supplements and need to get back to pumping which was hindered last night.  Hopefully, we'll be able to do it without supplementing formula but if not, that's ok.  I had to supplement through out my last child's nursing too.

On the homeschooling front...I'm looking at and reading about the Charlotte Mason approach and I've been looking at Ambleside Online curriculum.  It's seems to be along the lines for what I have in mind for next year.  We are going to the library after nap time and I'm going to get some books to start reading to the kids from the suggested booklists.  I'm excited about next year but ready to finish this year.  We've learned a lot about what we like and don't like this year, that's for sure.

Let me end all of this with a sweet picture of my beautiful baby girl taken today before our doctor visit.  She had just had a bath so she's got a baby mohawk thing going on which I cropped out ~ heehee~.  She's still a little jaundiced but it's getting better!  Lovin' that baby girl...

Busy, busy, busy

Typing while holding a semi-asleep baby.  Sorry in advance for typos.  \

Life has been busy with a newborn and being on my own while dh goes back to work.  But it's all good!

We've been doing homeschool though we didn't finish today.  But dh does homework! We only have 11 days to finish our 180 days for the state! The older kids spent the weekend at their grandparents.  While there, they went to a PowWow and had a blast.  They came home with jewelry, arrowheads, shells and shark teeth.

Baby is doing ok.  We've been dealing with jaundice and had to be at the doctor  6 or 7 times (all ready) for the yucky heal prick thing.  Her number is down but now we are dealing with slow weight gain.  We've not reached our weight and actually lost some after we gained.  I had to deal with this during my last child also and we ended up supplementing.  I didn't want to do that this time too but alas, we are...Right now, I'm taking Reglan and also Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle.  Tomorrow I'm going to pick up some Red Raspberry Leaf on our way back from the doctor (to check weight gain).  (That's what I feel like right now.)  I've got some Mother's Milk Tea but this particular one has Anise in it and I have a HARD time getting it down.  I'm thinking about ordering some other without anise online or maybe a tincture.  I'm not a hot tea kind of person so it's hard for me to drink it.   I'm eating my oatmeal but need to up it a little more.  I bought a new hospital grade pump and I'm trying to get that to help but that's hard to do with the kiddos during the day.  But with all of that, the doctors tell me that my baby is beautiful and very healthy.  Thank you God!

I'm healing fairly well.  I've felt good this time around.  My incision is not healing the way they want it to due to the new disolvable staples that they used.  They will fix it for me if it doesn't get better.  I'm going back this Friday for another check.  I'm praying that God heals it because I don't want to go through that right now so soon after my surgery.

But on a good note - I'm ordering some new cloth diapers tonight!  We started using cloth with our last child when she was about 9 months old.  The ones we have are premium size and  little big for our small one.  So I'm going to order some infant size unbleached chinese prefolds and some new covers.  I did not like our covers last time so I'm going to try proraps.  I'm also going to order some fitted diapers so I can make some.  I have some larger ones to use as patterns but I need a few smaller ones for our wee one who has such a tiny backside!  I love cloth diapers so I'm excited to get some more!

Ok, enough baby rambling.  I need to go do mama stuff!

Plans for 2006- 2007 School Year

So having a new nursing baby has finally given me some time to sit down and plan our curriculum for the 2006- 2007 school year.  Not much time for cleaning though – (there’s something sticky on the keyboard…ewww…).

While baby sleeps, I’m going to post this here with the hopes that if someone reads this and has some feedback – good or bad – that you might leave a little comment for me.  Some of this I’ve not seen in person and that worries me a bit.  So if you have any feedback on some of my choices, please let me know.  Thanks!  (Of course, that’s assuming that anyone even reads this!)

Older son  3rd grade level

Handwriting – Finish A Reason for Handwriting Transition Book

History – Story of the World  - After we finish that, some type of Geography program.  (Both sons will do this.)

Language Arts – Learning Language Arts Through Literature – Yellow Book.  Since they only focus on 4 books or that’s the way it appears, I’m also going to use various literature and Comprehension Guides from Veritas Press on the 3rd grade level.  I may also use a few from the 2nd grade level because they look fun!

Phonics – Alpha Phonics if needed.  My older son is a very fluent reader.

Math – Undecided but will either use Math-U- See or Horizons.

Science  I’m still looking for something that I can use with both boys.  Maybe the Alpha Omega LIFEPAC science but not sure on the grade level?

Younger Son – 1st grade level

Handwriting – A Reason for Handwriting.  He will use the lessons at the beginning of the Transition book.  It looks like something he can handle and older son did not do these so I’m going to make younger son a handwriting book.

Science, History & Geography – Same as older son.

Reading – We are going to use Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons or Alpha Phonics.  I’m also going to use the Veritas Press Literature with him.  I have most of the books needed and I can get the rest from the Library, I’m sure.  I’m just going to order the comprehension guides.  The public school teacher in me likes a very systematic approach to learning reading, so if we need something beyond the Teach Your Child to Read…then we might go with Horizons Reading.  I’ve taught the same system that Teach Your Child uses at the last school where I taught.  It’s very effective but sometimes it needed something more.  Don’t know if that made sense or not.

Grammar – First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind

Spelling – Spelling Workout Level A

Math  - Math U See or Horizons

Art & Music (Both Boys)– I’m also going to get the How to Teach Art to Children and The Usborne Piano Course, Book 1.  We have to get the large electric piano from my parent’s house, if we can find room to put it!

I’d also like to order some software, some of which teaches Spanish and some other games.

Better go clean house while my child sleeps.  She usually only sleeps in my arms so I need to use this time wisely!

She's Here!

Abby Elizabeth is Here!

She’s was born Friday, April 21 @ 7:24 a.m.

She weighed 8 pounds 7 ounces and was 19 inches long.

Going home...

She's doing well though having problems with jaundice.  We are having to do light therapy at home and are going back to the doctor in the morning for a check of her levels.

The three older children are at their grandparent's house for the week and I'm looking forward to them coming home and us all getting to know each other.  They got to see Abby for a short while and they really thought she was neat.  Though, Emma thought her belly button was "yucky".
