Dad's Point of View

2 December 2007

"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow"

Tomorrow marks the day of the first big snow storm.  This should be especially fun since it seems every year people forget how to drive in the snow.

A few years back my shift handled 50 motor vehicle accidents in a 60 minute period of time.  We did have some help from the midnight shift but we day shifters don't talk about that.

Just a reminder to all, that bridges freeze first, "black ice" is real even though you can't see it, and four wheel drive does NOT help you stop.

You should note that I dislike the use of underlines and all word capitalization in my writing.  I used it during the four wheel drive sentence because it is that important.

Please stay safe out there and take your time, use main roads and stay off of curvy down hill slopes.

6 December 2007 - SO true...

I swear people were better snow/ice drivers in TN than they are here in PA when we get WAY more snow/ice than in the south. I think its because most southerners DON'T try to go anywhere in the icy weather unless they absolutely have to. The northerners used to laugh at us for going to the grocery store at the threat of snow... but what is the alternative? Needing to get out in the yucky weather to go buy milk? I think not. We got our first sort of snowfall the other night also. It didn't amount to much, but it made the roads a little slick in places. I would like to tell people that it is not a display of your advanced driving skills to drive fast in the snow - it makes you look careless and psychotic.

9 January 2008 - Oh how true

And do we even need to discuss the crazed plow drivers? Not the ones in the town vehicles, no I'm talking the private guys with 4x4s who hit 60 mph in parking lots. The only accident I've ever had was when I hit a family's mailbox on the side of the road (opposite of the side I was driving on at the time!) because I had to avoid a plow guy backing out of a driveway who couldn't stop on the ice.
