Jan. 19, 2008 - swift things are beautiful by Elizabeth coatsworth (I think you should learn it)
Swift things are beautiful:
swallows and deer, and lightning that bright-veined and clear, rivers and meteors, wind in the wheat, the strong-withered horse, the runner's sure feet. and slow things are beautiful:
the closing of day, the pause of the wave that curves downward to spray, the ember that crumbles, the opening of flower, and the ox that moves on in the quiet of power.

Dec. 20, 2007 - The Soft Backed Turtle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One day in Hawaii as we were walking to the beach. I felt that something was different in the air. When I got on Grannie's snorkle,face-mask,diving boots and fins to start the nature filled adventure of acting like a fish, I plunged into the ocean. As i swam to the place i had seen fish the day before, I saw a different group of fish swimming around. There were only two of them but they were huge! They were about from my tallest finger to my elbow. Their checkered tail fins propelled them forward as I followed them around. Speedily they finally escaped my sights. Then I saw the other fish I had seen previously. I followed one just about to the surface of the water and then it went down onto another side of a wall. I looked down about to where my chest was and there was a sea urchin in one of the little grooves of the rocks. I pushed myself off of the rock and swam to one of the small puffer fish. When I came back up from the depths I was starving. Dad and Mom decided to go get some Mcdonald's a fair distance away from where we were camped on the beach. Grannie was to babysit us while they were gone. While they were gone, I went into the water near one of the places where the catamarans would dock. I felt something brush against my leg. I thought it was a jelly fish at first so I jerked my head to see what had touched me. A few days before, there were jelly fish in around that area and I had been stung a few times but I was glad to see that it was just a palm frond that had fallen off one of the palm trees. As I was dragging it out, a few of the leaves fell off, but I decided to make some shade so planted it into the ground with Grannie and Ellie. When it was planted, only one-tenth of it was planted. It was still taller by one or two feet than my dad who is average height. In a half an hour, mom and dad came back from their scavenging. As we ate, Grannie saw a head pop out of the water where the surfing area was and that the head was smaller than a regular man's head. Then then head went under again and didn't come up for another 4-8 minutes. We were scanning the water to see if we could find it again. The next time it emerged from the water a little closer to where we were on the beach. After a few hours it had ventured quite close to the water where we were swimming. Grannie ran up with Carrie to grab the snorkle to see what it was. As I watched them go to the area where the head had appeared, I heard Carrie gasp and explode out of the water "TURTLE!!!" Carrie was yelling with a frightened voice to grannie. "You're standing on it!" I thought "what!??". I went out to where they were and asked if i could have the goggles and see for myself. I went a little farther from where they were and the exact same thing happened except I was not as frightened. I was amazed at all the patterns he had on his back and at how big he was. I had never seen one in my whole life as big as that. He was at least 3/4 as long as me and his shell was just as wide too. After awhile my instincts got the better of me and I went up and gasped because Grannie was stepping on it again. After that a few people got interrested and started looking. This one man and woman had found it. He had thought it was a smooth rock so he walked right over it. Meanwhile, it got a little mad and swam up to the surface and opened it's mouth at the lady. She screamed so loud. A few people jumped out of the water because they were afraid of being showed the turtles' mouth.... but not my grannie. She stood on his back twice and never got showed his mouth!!! |

Nov. 7, 2007 - goose hunting
One day dad decided to go hunting for geese. Robin, Carrie and I asked to go with him. The next day Dad got the mesh ready for us to go underneath. We had already asked to go hunt on Arlie's land. When we got there, the decoys were all sitting up, we all thought they were real for a second. Decoys are plastic animals designed to look like what you are hunting. Hunters use them because it would trick the geese to come down and visit the decoys. Then they think it's safe. Dad had set them up the night before. We crawled under the mesh that had grass on top of it and we waited. and waited and waited and waited for 1 hour we waited under the mesh not moving. Then Dad said that he saw a flock of geese far away so we waited. They didn't come our way, they were going the opposite direction. Then we waited for 10 minutes at least, then we heard some honking. Dad pulled out his goose call. (It is like a tube with plastic in the middle so when my dad blows though it it will make a goose sound.) He started to blow in it. Then they came closer and closer until they were just above our heads flying. Dad came out from under the mesh and shot at one. It fell--but not very fast. He had wounded it. It got lower and started flapping away from us and the more it flapped, the lower it got. By the time it got to the ground, it was a fair distance away from us. Then Dad told me to go get it. When i got near it, it started running along the ground and flapping it's wings trying to get back into the air, but it was stuck on the ground. It decided to hide from me in the tall grass. All it did was go down like it was sitting on an egg and crouch down and put it's neck down where it's body was. Then i flipped it over with my foot and grabbed onto it's leg and carried it all the way back. It was as heavy as a full grown rooster. The whole time it was flapping it's wings a little bit. When i got closer and closer to Dad it started flapping it's wings slower and slower. When i got to Dad, Dad put it under a decoy. Then we heard some more honking and we jumped under the mesh. We looked up and we weren't sure if they were flying towards us or beside us to go away from us, but they turned around and went back the way they came. We waited and a huge group of geese came over but they were directly above us so we couldn't shoot them, so we waited for another group. It wasn't long till another goup came along. My Dad pulled out his gun again and shot 2 of them. They didn't drop like the other one did. He hit them in the right spot and they dropped like a rock from the sky. I asked Dad if i could go get them and he said "No, there's a bunch of other groups comming." Then he pulled out his gun once more and he shot another and another and another and another until he got 6 almost the max for goose hunting. The max is 8 geese for one time hunting. Then we stopped shooting and started gathering up all the geese. We were missing one. Dad said it had flown away into a different feild, and he directed me to it and told me to go find it and bring it back while he got the truck. I went out and searched every corner of that feild. Then i saw three deer run through another feild. Two bucks and two does. When i went to go back i saw another deer and i decided to chase it. So i chased it for a little while and it ran toward where my dad was getting the truck and i kept running to the place where we were going to meet. When we met, I asked him to come help me look for the goose so i jumped on the running board of the truck and we drove around to the middle of the feild. Carrie and Robin said "There it is!!!" It was laying on the ground so we picked it up and put it back in the truck. After that we went home. (This is a true story ) |

Oct. 23, 2007 - nothing
Well nothing to write about today, just decided to see how things were doing. Have you played Mexican Train Station with dominoes? Or have you played Pictionary? I tried both today. Mexican Train Station is kind of hard for me... Pictionary is fun. My auntie Shauna is going to come and teach us Rummy-0 and Mexican Train Station. |

Oct. 17, 2007 - My creative writing story
My Trip to the Auction
My trip to the auction house made my senses explode with sights, sounds, smell, taste and touch. As soon as we opened the doors, I could smell shavings of freshly cut wood and damp air that reminded me of dew in the morning. I saw a wild turkey, which is smaller than a barnyard turkey. There were bulls slobbering. There was a dog whining in a horse pen tied up. There was a bantam rooster. Bantams are little birds but big fighters. There was even an old petting zoo turkey and a Palm Turkey. Palm turkeys are black and white. In one cage there was a bunch of quail. The sound of the guinea hens was deafening. I coughed as I passed the Pot-Bellied Pig rolling in the dust. Norman and Jeff's hens were for sale too. Flemish Giant rabbits are bigger than an ordinary rabbit. There were tons of them. When I sat down, the stench of the dusty old chair crept through my nose and hit my brain like a drumstick to a cymbal. When I sneezed the auctioneer thought I was bidding. "Sold!--Buyer number please?" I stood up but I was too scared to hold up my card so I asked dad to. "Buyer number 628!", the auctioneer bellowed. I could have jumped through the roof but I didn't. People laughed as I sat down again. After I sat down I asked Carrie and Robin to get some fries with ketchup but instead I got fries with maggots! I asked in a disgusted way, "Where's the ketchup?" Robin told me, "I asked the man for ketchup and he said he was out of it so I asked him for the closest thing and he put on maggots!" All of a sudden a pigeon got out. The Auctioneer announced that whoever could catch the pigeon would get it free. It circled around my head. It swooped down and landed on my knee and started to eat the maggots! "That's a relief!" I exclaimed as the hungry pigeon ate the last maggot from the plate. Then I grabbed the pigeon. The auctioneer boomed, "Free for you, Sonny!" After I ate the fries, I whispered to dad "I want to pick up the turkeys and go." My family trudged to the barn where they kept the animals that were sold. When we go there they handed us a box of rabbits and the code number was 628! We were alarmed but we took them and asked for our turkeys. They were gone like a lightning bolt. They didn't come back for hours. When I was half asleep I heard a groan. I looked over to the old barn and there were the people with the turkeys. I galloped over to the people and snatched the box! When I got back to the car I woke dad up and put the turkeys in the back. The 5 hour ride home was "smelly-rific!" |

Oct. 16, 2007 - Fun Times
Yesterday I woke up feeling great. I ran downstairs and waited for mom to get up. When she did I was watching tv in the basement. (hee hee!) She called me to do some work. I thought if I got all my work done I could play outside until my dad got home. So I did. First I did my reading then handwiting, spelling and two pages of "My Trip To The Auction" story. Math was for later. I ran outside and rode my bike for one round of the pavement. then I ran to the dog pen and played with the dog for a couple of minutes. Robin, Carrie and Ellie came out. We started to play a game. We played the game until Dad came home, then we walked the dog. I played runescape on the computer until it was bedtime. Goooodnight!!! --Darren |
