6.24.2006 - Test Scores Are In!
Well, they
came! I was a bit nervous, only because I didn't glance over his
test before mailing it off so I truly had no idea of how he did... but
my oldest did very well. His overall test battery was 97%!!! That
means that only 3% of 7th graders across the country scored
better.
I'm so excited, and I really don't mean to sound pridefull about
it, but I'm just so excited. You see I felt like we really got
off to a grand start in homeschooling way back in kindergarten.
Very diligent, every page in the workbook, ahead in reading, exposeure
to great art, great music, foreign languages, etc... Along the way I've
changed curriculum choices many, many times mostly to go along with the
flow of our changing family, but also because people keep coming up
with new, great, curriculums!
There is a gap of 6 years between my first two sons... so while
I've got my oldest starting 8th grade right now, I'm just starting to
get into some meat with the next ones (7, 5, 3, & 16 months) and
things have grown steadily busier and slightly more complicated as so
many little ones are coming up behind... keeping them occupied enough
to get through some real meat with the junior higher.
So he has been practically teaching himself this past year...
things have taken on a bit more of an unschooling atmosphere around
here- which is a little weird for me as I started out with a very
structured classically-inspired type of homeschool. Well, it
seems the shift has been good for us- for the year that I felt like I
put the least into his education (at least as far as getting through
books, etc...) he managed to do remarkebly well. I have felt so
distracted for the last year or two and was really beginnng to worry
that his education must really be suffering... I was seriously
beginning to doubt my ability to school him through high school with
such a busy nest of little ones clamoring for my attention.
Well, I know test scores don't mean all that much in the real
world, but it does reassure me quite a bit... he can at least pass for
educated in the eyes of the beaurocrats...
It has renewed my positive outlook regarding the rest of his
education, and given me new hope and excitement as I plan the year
ahead! I really am looking forward to getting him through 8th
grade and then high school, by the Grace of God, I really think I CAN
DO THIS!
Yay!

Congtrats on your sons great test scores!! I know it is a measure of how you are doing at being his teacher.
I appreciated the post on my blog about sugar. I have heard so many parents have a similar story except sometimes it's other foods than sugar.. It makes me so sad to think of all the kiddos out there that are drugged up on Riddlin and the like when a diet change could be the solution. Thanks for sharing. :)

6.24.2006 - Calvert Art |
| Posted by |
Wow! That's great! I'm scared to test mine.
About the Calvert art. I bought that also, not knowing it was for 4th grade and up. From what I can tell: it seems like the student is suppose to know how to draw a little already. I wish they had sample pages. I am putting it on the shelf and will do more simple one this year and then try it with my son next year.
Wish we lived closer, so you could take a look at it ;)
I did notice that all their courses have some sort of art. So maybe that is why it does not teach how to draw. I will take a closer look at it and get back to you.
Blessings,
Linda<><

You can do it! Teaching high school is not hard if you have a willing student. I think that is the most important factor!
Congratulations on the excellent scores! |

Having a positive attitude is truly key. I have a son who just finished 9th grade and he was going through a rough patch in 7th grade. He decided in October he wanted to "try" public school and I kind of kept putting him off hoping it was just a passing fancy. He kept asking so I told him no way he could go in the middle of the year, we'd discuss it at the end of the school year again, hoping this too would pass. Well, by spring I was READY to put him on that schoolbus TODAY!
We took a tour of the school he would attend and he was very excited up until we went to see the school counselor. Josh was not impressed with her plan to throw him into whatever classes were available and then "adjust" if need be. He asked to un-register and his attitude was much different thereafter, not perfect, but he is actually much more obedient! I wonder if it's because I now have a folder with all the necessary registration paperwork?
I love having him home and I'm glad we did not have to test the public school waters any further. I know he would not have been happy, but I'm very glad that it was his own chioce to homeschool all the way through high school! |

6.24.2006 - Thanks for visiting |

Hi
Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope you enjoy putting together your yearbook! I hope you'll post pictures when it is done.
Let me also encourage you about homeschooling through high school ~ it's very worthwhile and you don't have to be SuperTeacher to accomplish it! I also have 5 children, and have just graduated No.2. Take advantage of opportunities for group learning in your area; check out what's available online. Encourage him to read lots of GREAT literature. Be involved in activities that serve others and that develop his talents / interest and promote leadership and responsibility.
Where in Minnesota are you? We lived in Rochester from Jan.1990 - Sept. 1993.

Of course you can silly! Don't be so hard on yourself! Ian's doing just fine and you don't have to worry about it so much. The most important thing is to remember that you don't need to be perfect and neither does he. Slow and steady wins the race. You're doing great! Now breathe woman! :) LOL!

WOW!!! Your post is almost identical to what I said...even the 97% scoring! I know that so many hsers DON"T take a relaxed approched and stess it causing them to "mimic" the public school system. Since most of us hs moms are products of public education, we don't have any other compass or example to go by. I guess that's where my personality, which does not want to do status quo, works for us in hsing. Anyway, that is so awesome and I'm going to put a link at the top of my post to yours...just so people know that it isn't a fluke what my chids test scores are. :)
