1.14.2008 - Stinking Stomach Bugs...

We've been hit, again, ugh. I was really hoping loading everyone up with kefir smoothies, filling those intestines with beneficial bacteria to fight off the bad guys, would prevent this bug from hitting, or at least from hitting so hard. It did last month... not this time. The bug has been making its way through our church (again) and has now hit 6 out of 6 children (2 of them twice...) Grrr...

No church yesterday, no orchestra today, no coop tomorrow; these bugs put a cramp in my style- I can't even seem to find a convenient time to get to the grocery store!
This too shall pass... I know it will. My job is to wait it out, and to try to serve my family with a cheerful heart (not always so easy in circumstances like these...) I'm not always so cheerful as I maybe should be, but I really am trying not to grumble, at least audibly. Stomach bugs are inconvenient, stomach bugs are gross, but I certainly don't want my children thinking they are inconvenient (or gross!) It's not their fault, and it certainly isn't anything personal. They need my tender love, even in a time like this, especially in a time like this, and I'm determined to give it.
So I'm off to sanitize more laundry, and probably read another story or two before sending them off to an early bedtime- compromised immune systems need their rest!
Enjoying them, even when they puke,
because of Him,
ali

1.11.2007 - Ouch! And Oh My!
This little piggy went to market,
this little piggy stayed home,
this little piggy had roast beef,
this little piggy had none,
and this little piggy cried "Wee, wee, wee, get this hair tourniquet off of my toes!"
Oh, my, have I got a story... the strangest thing happened this past Sunday afternoon. All was going well- I had planned the day before and had a meal with for lunch after church and before our nursing home visit I had practiced the piano (I was scheduled to play this week), and I was getting diapers changed as we were getting ready to head over to the nursing home. The baby needed to be changed- outfit and all... as I was buttoning up the new 'onesie' I noticed something looked a little odd with her little foot.
You know how hairs seem to stick to every inch of those fuzzy pajamas? And how they even get on the inside? And how sometimes you find one wrapped around a little one's toe? And you think 'oh, my, that looks uncomfortable. Here, let me get that off for you'... Well, what if you can't get it off?
My baby had a hair, or a few hairs, I'm really not sure... wrapped very tightly around two of her toes. I mean tightly. It was knotted. It had caused swelling, which worsened the cutting off of the circulation... I started to whimper. I called my husband over... who pulled out his pocket hunting knife... and proceeded to get between the toes and cut a part of the hair knot. We were able, after much effort and much holding down an increasingly uncomfortable baby, to get what we hoped was all of the hair off of the middle toe of her left foot. I say we hoped, because it was almost impossible to tell- the swelling had caused this deep crevice where the hair was and that crevice doesn't just go back to normal once the pressure is relieved...
The second toe (next to her big toe) was more swollen and when we tried to get at some more of the crazy hair, it just broke off at the knot leaving nothing to grab, not even if we had tweezers, which we didn't. (Mental note- pack good tweezers in diaper bag, you never know when you may need it!) I tried to get at it some with a safety pin (the one that was holding up Liberty's skirt...) -no good. By now I was whimpering more. It really looked like her toe was being cut off- it was scary...
We realized that short of slicing her toe up we were not going to be able to deal with this ourselves. We needed to get her to a doctor. We packed up quickly, sent word to the others ministering at the nursing home that we wouldn't be making it today, and headed for the nearest "Urgent Care" clinic- just a couple miles up the road. I cried on the way there. What if my baby girl lost her toe?! Ended up in the hospital? Needed surgery? Was in pain? Oh, no mommy wants her baby to be in pain... When we got their I felt very awkward saying "This is going to sound real strange, but my baby has this hair wrapped so tightly around her toe..." as the woman behind the counter nodded... "You've seen this before?!?!" I gasped. "Yep, we've seen it. I'll have a nurse take a look."
Well, the nurse took a look... "it's really in there"... no kidding lady, that's why we're here... she went to talk to the doctor... then came back and said the doctor wouldn't be able to take care of it here, they didn't have the right tools and she may need to be sedated so they can cut it off... "You need to get her to the ER" AAAAHHHH! The ER!!!
So we all piled back in the van and cruised to the nearest hospital, a couple miles away. The triage nurse there assured me that they see it "all the time"... What?! This is my sixth baby, I have many friends with 3, 4, 5, 6 kids... Never heard of this happening! She assured me that my baby would be okay, that they'd get it off soon, and then sent us to wait a few minutes in a room full of sick people. (That's what I hate about Emergency Room waiting areas! Who knows what we were exposed to!)
We got called back and the whole family piled into a room and watched as the nurse first tried to cut away what she could from the tiny mass of hair caught in the deepening crevice of my baby girl's toe. It started to bleed- there was so much pressure all the way around that the hair was now slicing into and through the skin- I really whimpered at that one. She stopped and said the doctor will be right in. There was a table full of tools, including the dreaded scalpel. There were some very fine and pointy tweezers and other instruments I didn't even recognize... He brought in a big fancy light, and some interesting head gear with magnifying lenses...
He explained that even though they would shoot her up with Lidocaine, there would be much screaming and I may not want to stay in the room. Well, I would've cried I'm sure, but I didn't want to leave my baby. I turned and saw my other children lined up, turning pale, already plugging their ears in preparation for the screaming... and decided I'd better take them for a walk down the halls. We walked back and forth, trying not to interact with any more sick people, and checking periodically to see if the screaming had stopped. It took a while... 5 or 10 minutes is a really long time when your baby is screaming and in pain...
When it was over, the doctor explained to me that he had made two deep incisions on her toe to be sure to cut through any hair that was still there. Then he went all the way around the toe, digging in that groove with a tweezerish thing, pulling stuff out all the way around. He looked the best he could with a bright light and the magnifying lenses but could not be absolutely sure he had gotten everything, it was too hard to see with the bit of blood and the swelling... they kept us there to check the blood flow, or capillary refill, which looked good- so it seemed he must've gotten everything. When we had first arrived, her capillary refill was quite slow- not good- but by then it was almost instantaneous, a very, very good sign.
When the doctor stepped back in, he told us that he had run into the head of pediatric emergency and after mentioning our case, the other doctor answered with a "huh, that makes 5 in the past week..." !!??!! Five? At this one suburban hospital?! They said they see it all the time, on fingers, on toes, and unfortunately, on little boys- if you know what I mean... And apparently it's very common around 2 months old as this is when the mothers hormones are shifting back to normal and she typically starts losing more hair, the hairs that she wasn't losing many of during pregnancy now start dropping like flies... or should I say like birds over Australia?
The doctor said that by the looks of how swollen her toe was and how deep the hair was cutting, that it had to have been on there at least a day... ugh... how did we not notice that one?! And that yes, indeed, if gone undetected for too long, it really can result in a wee one losing a tiny appendage- which only legitimized my panicky fears... thanks for that, sir... and praise the Lord we found it in time! He also mentioned that the deep grooves on her toes would take a while to look normal again, and then he added "several days even..." I told him I was so glad that he mentioned that "or this time tomorrow I would've been panicking, big time... " and I would have been...
It's been several days now, and it looks pretty good. Her precious little toes are the color they should be, the size they should be, and pretty much the texture they should be. No signs of infection from her little open wounds, which should be long-closed by now.
So there you have it- starting the new year off with a little trauma like only the Williams can! Last year it was respiratory problems, this year a "Hair Tourniquet on Toe"- yes, they really have a name for it!
Enjoying each and every one of her little toes (and thanking the Lord for them all!),

12.28.2006 - Mercy- Six Weeks Old
I know, she's 7 weeks already... I'm late in posting these pics... sorry for making you wait...
(I have family that check in here frequently to see what we're up to... family that is waiting for more baby pictures...)
Those precious newborn days pass so quickly! Our little Mercy is growing so fast... already too big for some of the first tiny outfits and way too big for the first tiny shoes. But then we look at Hope, who'll be 2 in less than 2 months, and Mercy is still so tiny to us!
Here are a few glimpses of our wee one, enjoy her with us...
Do you see that other little head trying to get in the picture with the baby?
There it is again, up on the left...
There's the culprit! Grace can't get enough of that baby, or the camera!
 A little lounger time...
 A little tummy time...
Oh, she is so precious! And so far she is my best sleeper at night... over the last few weeks she has progressed from sleeping for 3 hours to 3 1/2, to 4, to an incredible 5 hours at night between feedings. Oh, what a joy! My last couple babies nursed every 2 hours for many, many, many weeks... months even... that was hard... but the Lord has been merciful to me this time (could it be this baby's name?) and I am staying relatively well-rested.
Enough for now,
much more later, I'm sure...
Enjoying them,
because of Him,
ali

12.8.2006 - Mercy- One Month Old
I can hardly believe it, she's a whole month old (as of yesterday.)
She's become so alert and curious, really looking around soaking it all in- and there's a lot for a little one to soak in around here!
She's strong and vibrant and still oh, so sweet...
She has such delicate, thin hands, my favorite of her features so far.
Her eyes are turning a beautiful blue like so many of her siblings.
Sleeping babies are so sweet, so soft, I could just sit and soak her up all day long!
I think, if you look real, real, close- you can almost see her growing!
I'd better get knitting...
Like so many of our months, our first month with Mercy was a whirlwind. The very nature of being number 6 means that there are already 5 busy children in our home! Since Mercy was born we've had 3 sick siblings, several orchestra practices, one orchestra concert, some Revival meetings at church, a nursing home ministry visit, a soup party, a modeling job, lunch guests, dinner guests, and even a Saturday spent running the printing press getting some scripture-filled tracts ready to distribute on the streets of Minneapolis! All the while Daddy has been working full-time hours (and then some) at work on top of trying to start a business and Mommy has been trying to keep up the homeschooling (a bit) and work on knitting projects. Lest you think I've been far too busy to enjoy this fleeting time with her, let me assure you- I sit and hold and squeeze and coo at this baby so much that my arms ache. My neck gets sore from holding her and gazing down at her lovely little face. I've probably taken at least a hundred pictures. Many a dinner has been late to the table because I've been planted on the couch enjoying my baby! And almost anytime I'm sitting at the computer, she's in my arms- I'm remembering how to type one-handed (I've done this before...) I'm looking forward to enjoying this next month with her, and many more after that! Thank You, Lord, for the gift of Mercy. She is such a blessing. Guide us as we raise her for You and Your glory, amen. Enjoying them, because of Him, ali

12.4.2006 - Mercy- Three Weeks Old
I'm behind... not in taking pictures, just in sharing them... she'll be 4 weeks tomorrow, but here are some '3 week old' pictures. I can hardly believe we've had her almost a month already! She's just such a fixture in our family that it's hard to imagine what it was like without her- just a few short weeks ago. Life with baby is busy, very busy, and we're just starting to try to get back to school "for real". Things are falling into place little by little... and we're all enjoying the process.

12.2.2006 - Precious Moments with Mercy
I just love it when tiny babies curl up and fall asleep on Mommy! They grow so fast, I'm definitely cherishing the moments. She'll be walking and talking before I know it... but for now she's my tiny newborn baby and I'm loving every minute with her.
Enjoying them, because of Him, ali

11.25.2006 - Mercy- Two Weeks Old
Another week flew by- what's new, right? Seems like every week flies by. It's a sobering thought, really, if you let yourslef stop and think about it for very long... time really flies by, our children's lives really fly by- every day is precious and every day is a gift. Now if I could just really live as though I really believed that every day. I am trying to learn to cherish every day with my sweet babies and my dear husband. It's something that's easy to think about these first couple of weeks with a newborn- they grow so fast, every day seems to bring a new look to their tiny little faces. As they get older and start moving around faster and faster, it's far too easy to slip back onto life's treadmill and run through each day as though we'll never run out of days to run through. With each new baby I go through these stages of deeper realizations of some of the deeper things in life. Things like getting the most out of every day. Things like stopping to smell the flowers- today, for tomorrow the blossoms may be gone. Things like reading one more story- today, for tomorrow that sweet little one may not want to sit on my lap and be read to. Things like smiling into the face of each child, each day, lest their memories of childhood be filled with more stern orders to 'pick up that mess!' than adoring 'do you know how much I love you?'s. Enough philosophising for today. But really, time is flying by. Mercy turned 2 weeks old (and is already approaching the 3 week mark...) and I can still hardly believe that the pregnancy is over! She got a good review at her little check-up. She's up to 9 lbs. 6 oz. and 21 1/2", so she's gained almost a pound and grown 2 inches already! What a little miracle!
A flash in the face of an already pale woman isn't the most flattering... but I just love the squished up little face of a newborn cuddling and falling asleep on a shoulder! This one looks like we've already started training for the Rock, Paper, Scissors Championship! (Did this make the news in your neck of the woods? Or do I just listen to too much talk radio?) Enjoying them because of Him, ali

11.22.2006 - Happy 4th Birthday Grace!
Wow! Somwhere in the whirlwind that his been the last few days my sweet little Gracie turned 4! Monday, the 20th, yep, that was it. We went all out and treated her to an evening concert... well, it was her brothers' homeschool orchestra concert... but that's still a pretty special evening, right? The presents waited until yesterday evening after daddy got home. And the cake, well that will come on yet another day as I was in far too much pain (head and neck again) to do much of anyting yesterday, certainly not up to cake-baking! She didn't seem phased by the chaotic and slightly spread out birthday events... she's just happy to have new cute dolly things and the right to say she's 4. It was nice to see her all smiles as she's just getting over being sick again and has had more than a few grumpy moments. It was a pretty long year for her, being 3- with 2 hospitalizations on oxygen and at least as many 'close-calls' where she barely managed to stay out of the dreaded hospital... and several visits with our new friend, her respiratory therapist... several rounds of antibiotics for her several bouts of pneumonia, and several rounds of steroids for her several asthma flare-ups... but she's a strong one and she really doesn't seem phased by it at all. In fact, she's probably accepting it all as just a part of life far better than I am! Well, we're just so thankful to have her as a part of our growing family- may we never take her for granted! I look forward to watching her grow into the Godly young women we're praying she'll be. And I continually pray for ever more wisdom and discretion in parenting and guiding her through each of her years.

11.15.2006 - Mercy- One Week Old
Wow, a week old. It seems to have flown by, and yet it seems like I can't remember a time without her. This baby is so sweet, she is such a joy to have. She is so peaceful, for now, and I'm loving it. I know it won't be long, it will seem like it's here tomorrow, when the time will come for her to be crawling, then walking, then running and tumbling with the rest of them. Shouting, even whining with the best of them, or would that be the worst of them? But for now, I'm cherishing the sweet, sweet sleepy newborn that she is.
I could just hold her all day... except that I can't... I have a bad neck, and for the first couple of weeks after every baby I go through quite a painful adjustment period with all of the looking down and the holding/lifting things with my arms all the time nursing and just cooing. It hit me yesterday pretty hard and I spent the day nursing my neck and shoulders with Tiger Balm and heat packs & ice packs... and shushing the rest of the children to keep my headache at bay (headaches from neck pain are excruciating...) So I'm having to be careful about body mechanics and being sure to have pillows supporting her while I nurse (I need to fix my torn Boppy Pillow) as I don't really want to be taking too much motrin, or any pain killers, while nursing. It will pass, my body will adjust, and my chiropractor visits will be a bit more regular for a while. She is worth every ache and pain. Well, with me not feeling too good, and with no school happening this week, the rest of the troops fell out of order yesterday. Wandering aimless through the day with this many little ones is a recipe for a whining disastor. We will be having a few structured activities the rest of the week, even if it's just assigned Mr. Potato Head time, maybe a coloring contest... I suppose it's time to start making some turkey decorations or something, maybe a Thankful Tree- we have so much to be thankful for! Happy One Week (yesterday), my sweet! enjoying them, because of Him, ali

11.15.2006 - Babies Bring Blessings- Part 2
"There shall be showers of blessings..."
For our Soup Party on Saturday my aunt and uncle not only brought soup, but they brought me these beautiful big pink roses- thank you Linda & Steve! Monday & Tuesday brought yet 2 more meals, and a knock on the door- a special delivery- that looks lovely on top of my desk (in my kitchen where I sit at my computer, too much on some days...) A lovely little assortment of greens, and of course- a balloon, the little ones think that's the coolest. My favorite part would be this- These last couple of years I've developed quite a love for hummingbirds- ever since we put up a feeder right in front of our dining room bay window and we started being visited multiple times a day by the amazing little creatures. Who knew there were so many hummingbirds in Minnesota? I'm determined to add to out feeder collection each spring... I've become a bird watcher... just like my parents...
Well, we have really been humbled by the outpouring of well-wishes and the very special gift of meals. We live 30-45 minutes north of most everyone we know, it's a sacrifice for these folks to be bringing us meals, and yet they keep coming! We are so very blessed! Thank you all so very, very much, in Him, ali

11.10.2006 - Babies Bring Blessings- Part 1
Wow, even before the baby came the blessings began flowing. It is always so humbling to me to see people cheerfully give of themselves and their resources, even more so when they're giving to me and my family. A few weeks back, quietcajun e-mailed asking for my address- she wanted to make an afghan for the new baby! How sweet is that?! After verifying that she wasn't an internet stalker posing as a nice lady with an extremely giving heart, I gave her the address. The Saturday before going in, this arrived at my door-
Isn't it beautiful?! And soooo very soft. What a blessing! Thank you, thank you! Then my sister came up with another baby outfit (my mom had already found a couple of adorable gender-nonspecific sleepers!) saying she couldn't wait any longer, so I should hurry up and have that baby so everyone would know wether to buy pink or blue! Oh, and she brought a pack of newborn diapers- diapers are always a blessing- I'm a firm believer in practical, usable, gifts! There were also cookies, I'm pretty sure those were for me and the kids... at least I hope so because that's who ate them! Then when she came to visit in the hospital she had with her the most adorable little pink jumper with embroidered roses on it... so very, very flowery and feminine- this will be the daintiest, girliest girl yet. Oh so cute! Thursday night our Pastor's wife brought us a wonderful meal- a scrumptious enchilada casserole/hotdish, a veggie loaded salad, and a big bowl of freshly baked cookies! I will be getting that recipe asap and will try to remember to post it to share- it was a hit- I loved it, DH loved it, the kids all liked it, it's a keeper- as soon as I get it, that is. Friday my wonderful aunt LouAnn drove up and brought lunch- one of our absolute favorites- Papa Murphy's take and bake pizzas- if you don't have a Papa Murphy's pizza nearby, I'm so very, very, sorry. Their gourmet chicken garlic has been on our top 10 list ever since our first taste. So we enjoyed a Hawaiian and a stuffed chicken and bacon pizza! (And we'll be enjoying them again for lunch today!) She also added to the pink, flowery, embroidered collection of adorable little girl outfits. Later, my mom and dad stopped by- my dad helped my DH pick out and install a new kitchen faucet so we shouldn't continue to have water drip down the handle and across the counter and onto the floor! There was a bit of comedic adventure involved with that project... but... my mom brought a big pot of scalloped potatoes which went into the freezer to enjoy sometime next week as we had another meal coming that evening! And she too added to the pink pile! Oh, fresh new little baby outfits are so much fun! For supper we were blessed (and indeed it is such a blessing- they drove 45 minutes to bring us that meal, each way, in the dark, and the cold!) with a 'pizza pot pie'- a new one for us, but also a keeper. Not only am I being blessed with the actual food, but with the new recipe ideas to expand my cooking repetoire, as well as my children's taste buds. And today, we're having our yearly soup party- so people will be coming over and bringing soup! And crackers, and bread, cheese, chips, salsa, soda, cookies, you name it, they'll bring it. And I can just sit and enjoy the family fellowship and the smorgasborg of goodies. 'There shall be showers of blessing' This is the promise of love; There shall be saesons refreshing, Sent from the Savior above. Showers of belssing, Showers of blesisng we need; Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

11.9.2006 - Befores and Afters
Thought I'd get a couple before and after pics up for everyone to see that extra 35 lbs... well, the baby was only 8 lbs. 8 oz.- plus placenta and a bunch of amniotic fluid... the rest is still on my hips and thighs... oh well, the baby is so worth the havoc that is reaked on my body with each pregnancy! Even the back pain... well... yeah, I'm still having the 'just gave birth euphoria' so for now, even the back pain was worth it. Well, here ya go- this one was at 38 weeks...
And this one was taken the morning before going in... with my girls attached at my side... And here I was just before getting settled in and 'all hooked up'... And now for the one you're all anticipating... immediately after... More to come... after more napping and more nursing...
Enjoying them, because of Him, ali

11.2.2006 - Pregnancy News- 39 Weeks (less 2 days)
Well I just returned from another midwife appointment and now the anticipatory excitement is really kicking in! No major news in the ripening arena. I have progressed to 3 cm, but the cervix is still fairly thick, very soft though... but considering the fact that some women spend a few painful hours getting dilated to 2cm, I'm really in pretty good shape for being induced in a few days. As of now, the plan is to go in on Monday in the early afternoon and start things off with a bit of cervial ripening prostaglandin stuff and see if that isn't enough to jump start my labor nice and gradually. We'll try 2 rounds if needed and then discuss stepping up to the dreaded pitocin. With Liberty, the prostaglandins were all I needed to get well underway, and I only stepped up to the pitocin after some pressure from that midwife, who wanted to speed things up... in retrospect that really annoys me, I would've rather taken a few more hours and had things progress more gradually, but at the time, when I was in a significant amount of pain, it seemed to make more sense... If, for some reason, that doesn't get things going, she said I could go to sleep for the night and we'd start things up with the pitocin first thing in the morning on Tuesday. But hopefully it won't come to that... we'll see... Sooooo, unless things change in the meantime, it looks like I should have a baby next Monday night or at least by around this time next Tuesday! Yay! Now I need to get my huge grocery list made out and get my cupboards and fridge stocked a.s.a.p.! And this weekend will be my last chance to get some bulk cooking done so I'd better hop to it. Enjoying them (and anticipating enjoying another one), because of Him, ali

10.26.2006 - Pregnancy News- 38 Weeks (almost)
Just got back from
another midwife appointment, and I feel much better now. Baby
seems to have grown some, heartbeat sounded fine, and after a slow
morning we got lots of movement after lunch. So everything looks
okay, it just seems to be a bit smaller than all of my other
babies. Well, perhaps this one could actually wear a newborn
outfit or two for a couple of weeks... or on the other hand, if I
wavered and decided not to be induced and went a week past my due date
(as usual) maybe it would have plenty of time to pack on the pounds
(yes, pounds, not ounces!) and be 9 or more...
I'm still really torn about the whole epidural or intrathecal narcotics
options... I guess it would partially depend on wether or not we end up
inducing- I've never made it naturally with pitocin streaming through
my veins. Well, we'll see... I'm just glad
to see that baby's grown and things are looking fine. Now I can
get back to my nesting and hopefully make more progress. Things left to do- Bring in cradle, wash lining Stock up on diapers & wipes Clean/organize our school stuff Some bulk cooking & baking Finish up last year's Homeschool Yearbook Get this year's started Finish my current sweater design project Finish the knitted samples I've started Paint the remaining cabinet doors in the bathroom Hang the pictures I bought 2 years ago in my bedroom Paint the rest of the entry Put together the boys' new desks for their room Clean/organize the entry closet Buy paper plates & bowls Pick a soup recipe to share Maybe a little sewing Definitely lots of knitting- I started some booties/socks and another baby hat...
There's more, but as you can see, it's mostly cleaning and organizing
for the soup party! The car seat's ready, there's a bag packed
with an outfit for me and boy & girl outfits for baby, I'm being
really good about keeping the camera battery charged, and we do have 1
bag of diapers... so I guess, even though it seems like this all snuck
up on us way too fast, we're really pretty ready. All that's really
left to do is keep up the Evening Primrose Oil and pray for swift
'ripening', gradually progressing (spontaneous) labor, and a healthy
baby!
