Aug. 27, 2008 - Homeschool Memoirs Assignment: My Homeschool Agenda

The biggest thing on my agenda this year is to fully embrace homeschooling. I have had times over the last couple of years where I did, and it was the happiest time for both Levi and me. But then I start to put too many irons in the fire and take on too many personal projects. Then lesson planning, answering questions, working and playing with Levi starts to feel like a chore. I get frustrated, stressed out and resentful.
So this year I am listening to what God has been trying to tell me. I'm going to give my all to homeschooling and make it my personal project. Use my creativity, learn about things I'm interested in, and have fun.
Over the past couple of years Levi and I have developed some similar interests, which I honestly never thought would happen! We are both very interested in nature and animals. For science we are
using this:
I've been reading through it and it is very interesting and well done. It uses the Charlotte Mason approach.Levi and I both love history. We are doing unit studies on the 19th Century. We are using this as a base...
...with an emphasis on Lewis and Clark, Mountain Men, Pioneers, the Oregon Trail and Native Americans. I am making up many of our own unit studies, and we're going to do a lot of notebooking and try a few lapbooks. We're also going to work on geography of the United States.
...and I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival!We're going to read and study the Bible. We also like to listen to this:

We're going to practice handwriting, spelling, and grammar as it comes up in the notebooking and everyday life. We're going to practice typing through emailing. We're going to teach health by living healthy, active lives.
Audie teaches math and he uses this:

A Bible verse that has encouraged or inspired me during this planning-process was Hebrews 12:1.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverence the race marked out for us. And the very beginning of verse 2. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus...
This verse reminds me to not get entangled in things that don't matter. Things that hinder me. Things that take my best away from homeschooling and my family. Things that cause me to take my eyes off Jesus.

All your choices really look interesting and fun. What a great revelation from our Lord about where you need to be putting all your efforts.

I appreciate your approach to homeschool. It makes for a lot less stressful situation. Also, my family did the Prairie Primer one year and really enjoyed it. God bless you through this school year and always!
