Sep. 3, 2008 - Homeschool Memoirs Assignment #3: Routines

For today's assignment we have to share our homeschool routine, as well as our prayer for this year. To read other's routines or join this meme, click here.
I have a love/hate relationship with routines. I know I need one, I am happier when I am following one, but I have trouble sticking to one. I've tried many all the way from very structured to none at all.
I think the best thing for me is a basic framework. Wake by 6, morning routine and breakfast done by 9, and then Bible and pray with Levi. Next we like to watch an episode of Little House and then do some sort of exercise (treadmill/weights) or physical work - outside whenever possible. Then we come back in and do some schoolwork until lunch, which is between 12 and 1. After lunch we do some more school work, work or play outside and then come in to finish up any undone book work. At 3pm Levi has free time and likes to play on the computer. I usually check my email and blogs, do research, etc. At 4 pm I start preparing dinner. Audie comes home at about 4:30, and we try to eat around 5.
In the past we've tried to do every subject everyday, but we hated it. This year we're doing unit studies and notebooking. This week we're only working on Science. We read from the science book, practice handwriting and grammar and have discussions based on what we're reading. Next week we might work on our history unit study and base all learning on that, unless we feel like doing science another week.
Next week Levi will start doing math everyday, and practice typing through emailing a few times a week (or more). We have homeschool gym class on Tuesdays. I like him to help with cooking and cleaning, house and homesteading chores daily. But other than that we're pretty flexible.
My prayer for this year is that I will give my best to homeschooling, my relationship with Levi will continue to grow, and we will both grow closer to God.

Sep. 3, 2008 - be careful

be careful, it's addictive. Gavin emails me a few times DAILY it seems. Ki emails responds to every email I sendhim, so if I want to send his email daily, he'll email me daily. And Gavin is typing "CYA L8R' at the end of his. (Falcon is his online gaming name, BTW)
I need to have Ki start using spell check! and never let him email Grammy with out me correcting it all first, LOL. She had something to say about gavin's emails last time he forgot SpellCheck.
4:30 is GREAT! Brian left the house at 6:30AM today and I have no idea when he'll get home. (it's 5PM already, he called to say he's working late- again)

Good morning! You left me a comment yesterday asking if I worked from home. I do. I do marketing, some programming, power point presentations and risk management for an insurance company I've been with since 1998. When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter in 2001, I gave 9-months notice that I wasn't coming back after the baby was born, so we worked out a deal that I could work from home. Where I was once an employee, now I am an independent contractor (no benefits, etc.). However, I set my schedule and come in when I need to or on certain days. Mostly I work from the house, though. When I go to the office, my husband stays home and homeschools James & Lauren. He's a real estate agent so his schedule is also pretty flexible. Thank you for your question! It sounds like your family and mine do similar homeschooling activities. We also love Little House and there are times that's all we watch during the week (we don't watch TV - only movies). James & Lauren get so mad at Nellie! Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful school year!

Sounds like a good idea, covering one subject each week.
I am guessing that a unit study is the same thing as what we would call a project?
Hope you have a good year.

You hit the nail on the head with me and my schedule issues. I need one. I like one. Sticking to one--whole nother thing!!
I've made my girls blogs where they can do their journaling and they can practice their typing. They feel very important having blogs ;) They also have pen pals that have helped with their writing. They use snail mail for the pen pals.

I love a good routine, but the one that works best is the one we follow. I've not always good at following a rigid routine so I try to keep mine loose but still intact.
