Dear Lord, I feel like a Whale!

• Sep. 19, 2005 - Just say 'no'!

Here's how i see it. Invitations/ requests/favours from people in our world should be responded to  with a 'Yes, I can' or 'Sorry, I'm not able to right now'. So, WHY do I find myself fumbling for an excuse to justify my refusal...

It takes a brain like a speeding bullett to come up with an instant excuse to 'Will you mastermind the Sunday school's easter production?' when you're asked in September.  It's so easy to  whip out an excuse 'Sorry, we're off to papua New guinea then...' or 'The hamster is suicidal' 'I'm SURE we have guests then'. Maybe because people think homeschoolers are hands on gals that  will take on anything (which of course we are!) they think anything vaguely crafty or to do with children is something we're desperate to gleefully say 'YES' to.

Well I'm finally learning to keep it real and not feel duty bound to any favour request flying my way. It's OK to say no sometimes. Because I'm such a wuss at this the 'leave it with me, I'll get back to you' line works well. I'm realising more and more that for everything there is a time and season and to push in and find what God would have me give my energy to. Also fake Excuses count as lies! (eeek!)And,  if I take on too much, I can't give 100% of myself to anything...and that sucks!

Congratulations for making Blogger of the Week and welcome from Oklahoma. It's so nice to be able to "talk" with people all over the world and get to know them. I will be checking your blog often to see what's up in England.

So nice to meet you! And what a great post! You are so right about those seasons...and most likely we won't have the same seasons going on at the same time, either. When my children were little, I was fortunate to have a husband that protected me from taking on too much....mostly because he was better at saying "no" than I was! I am sure that your book is a huge blessing (no pun intended!) =) Blessings ~ Patricia

Congratulations on being blogger of the week! It's so wonderful to read your blog and to "meet" a hs Mom from the UK!! I was chuckling to myself as I read about not knowing what to say when we're asked to do things because we're home anyway. I get this ALOT! I have a hubby who has the wisdom to tell me to say "no" because I never seem to be able to all by myself! LOL Take care and God Bless!

i am very good at saying 'no'. i'm also very good at telling people to go home when they come for a visit. gena thinks i'm an absolute embarrassment, but hey, i know that my guests would CRINGE if they were thought of 'unwanted' guests so i kick them out long before i start to dislike them.
love jen

As one who says Yes too often (but getting better at saying No) I appreciated the humor about this topic. I'm trying to be more real this year too but should that fail I will remember the suicidal hamster excuse <VBG>.

I know so well what that is like. I always feel like people are judging what I invest my time in - never acknowledging that my priorities might be different than theirs. For instance, my children and I love to be involved in the community theater - and yes, that is a large time commitment -however, it is what we have chosen to make important. It means that during the time we are involved with a production, we have to say no to many other things. Nobody can prioritize things for you except for the Lord. There is freedom there in saying "I'm sorry - I'm unable to be your Superwoman right now." I say that and just a few weeks ago was unable to say no to filling in at church in the nursery - and the result of that was a sinful, complaining, grumbling heart. You can have the consequence of someone being disappointed in your being unable to fulfill their expectations OR you can have the consequence of disappointing the Lord by having sin dwelling in your heart. YUCK! I'll choose the first - because the truth is, I disappoint others daily - even though I don't want to, it is a fact of life!

So, I've found that "Let me pray about that and talk to Mike (my husband)" works well. It's not an excuse and not a lie... that way I don't make a hasty decision that I'll regret... Let's face it. Sometimes we homeschool moms may get a touch of that "I-need-to-something-or-I'm-gonna-pull-my-hair-out-from-the-"need"-of-approval" syndrome (that's not just me, right?)... Praying usually helps me to realize if it's something I want to do, or what the Lord wants me to do... after all, He put me in charge of these precious blessings and that's more important than I give credit a lot of the time (unfortunately)...

In Him,
Amy
