Dear Lord, I feel like a Whale!

• Mar. 13, 2006 - Does ANYTHING count as education???

Now I love a good romp through the forest with my kids like any homeschooler. I love it when they initiate their own learning and adventure and discovery are round every corner. We have spent many an afternoon knee deep in mud exploring and debating the world around us. One of the definite advantages of homeschooling is indeed the 'white space' time for a child to create and explore their own way.

However, I'm feeling more and more uncomfortable with the style of home education in this country where ANYTHING goes, and education just supposedly happens regardless of what you're doing.  Here's my issue with it...

Surely, we are called to 'raise' our kids. This, to me, means not only giving them whitespace time to explore, but ALSO giving them opportunitiues to learn self discipline and getting to grips with some decent work. I want to be sure what they are well tooled up for the working world AND well tooled up in Godly character. This stuff doesn't just happen as they meander through life with barely any goals or direction!  Sure , autonomous learning has a place in a homeschoolers kit bag - but surely many more tools, and dazzling gems of learning we can also offer our kids.

Jane

You have brought up a great point. I would not be able to stand myself if we did not follow some type of homeschool schedule. We use a homeschool curriclum but there is allways room to do other things like playing in the mud puddles, reading books, writing numbers in the snow ect. I think there has to be some type of balace between working on skills that need to be learned and allowing children to have free play. How homeschool parents do this is between them and God nobody else.

Surely the point and purpose of Christian home education is to raise our children to live the "extraordinary" life that we are called to. You know the life that Jesus talked about when he said, "even the pagans do that..." We're supposed to be the ones who make the effort to go one better--go two miles instead of just one, offer your tunic and your cloak, shoot for the "extraordinary" not just the barely acceptable (Matthew 5:38-48). In education surely it means we strive for excellence, hoping to set a standard, and not falling into mediocrity then walking around in our "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven" T-shirts. I personally believe there is no greater testimony than kids who are learning well, understanding discipline and self-discipline, and practically understanding what it means to live responsibly in their family and community. That must be what education is about! Maybe it's time for us to stop making excuses and start taking some strides toward a higher standard of achievement for ourselves and for our God. In this case, I think the actions would truly speak volumes louder than words.

• Mar. 15, 2006 - Tree Huggers!

Posted by deedeeuk
Jane - I totally agree!!!! I have met more than my share of 'homeschoolers' in this country who use what they call the 'unschooling' approach!! From what I can see it goes something like this - 'Go hug that tree over there and then come and tell me what you learned from that'!!!! They think I'm being very american (which I obviously am) because I use some curriculum and books! I had loads of families leave our support group because we had structured activities as opposed to just letting the children 'experience' each other! I'm not even sure I like the sound of that! Surely they can have fun doing things and learning things together in a fun way!! A large room full of children with no direction sounds like chaos to me!! We are called to 'train up our child in the way he should go' not just sit back and watch where they end up on their own! We need to take this seriously! God does! I find that most christian home ed families over here believe similarly and a few non-christians too! Unfortunatly the 'tree huggers' are noisier and are heard more easily! And they also try and speak for all of us!! Which they don't!!!!!!!! This is one reason I agreed to host the UK blog - I felt it was important to have someplace for the like minded home ed'ers in the UK to link up! I'm not a big one for campaigning or anything but all of this business lately has reminded me of the old saying that 'For evil to succeed all it takes is for good men (and women) to do nothing' ! Sorry for joining you on your soapbox!! HEHEHE! You just hit right where I'm feeling it at the moment! You tell them!!!

Oh... I'm so jealous of you getting the Pilgrim's Progress! Congrats!!!! Let me know how you like it.

Also, I haven't forgotten about your book... ummmm... things have been a little crazy here (I know you don't know what that's like since you have time for tea with the ladies... a;sldjf;aslkfj) but I will get to it... I really will... I just got this hair-brained idea to clean my house and it's kind of taken on a life of it's own... (I'm sure you don't know what that's like either...)

Love ya,

I was a really pleasant surprise to come across your entry this evening. I've been feeling like I and the kids would enjoy unschooling immensely more than homeschooling and had convinced myself of all sorts ideas concerning it. My husband said absolutely not. LOL.

Anyway, today it was very much like a light went on in my attic. We are called to "raise" and "guide" our children; to train them. LOL. It's amazing how one lightbulb moment can change an entire mindset....

Just wanted to let you know I enjoyed the post and how timely it was!

Would you please stop over to Adventure Acadamy's blog and encourage her to stay at HSB? She has experienced two deaths recently in their family and is discouraged. Let's join together and lift her and her family before the throne of God.

I am sending out a "mass apology" to everyone I told about "The Clean Heart, Clean Home Challenge". I have received some comments in regard to leaving the button on people's blogs and I feel the best way to make sure there aren't others who are offended, is to apologize to those I sent the notice to.

I feel just horrible that some thought I was "advertising" in some way when my intention was to share with other homeschoolers what I was offering as encouragement and a way for us to join together.

If you are one who was upset by my post, please feel free to delete it and email me or leave a comment on my page and I will personally apologize. To those who have joined in The Challenge, I'm so looking forward to what the Lord has in store for us and hope we will all be able to bless our families and grow in the Lord through it! Thank you most importantly for seeing my heart. I never meant to disregard anyone's post when I left the comment about the Challenge, and want you all to know that anything you ever have to say to me, whether on topic or not, is more than welcome on my blog. I will also be making a new category on my blog that will list those of you who don't mind getting urgent prayer requests or information from time to time. I hope this way I will be able to avoid upsetting anyone similarly in the future.

Thanks for allowing me to comment on your blog. I hope you will accept my apology (and not be upset that I'm "off topic" from your post, but I have many people to get to still tonight).

In Him,
Amy Verlennich

• Apr. 2, 2006 - yes, I've often thought the same thing

Posted by IFBPreachersWife
Of course, there is no way I would interfere with how a parent HSs their child; it's none of my business (well, I interfered once but it was family and I had a good reason! lol) But I've gone from the rigid to the lax and I have finally found myself somewhere in the middle. Children need to learn how to focus, how to work, how to do that which is uncomfortable, difficult or time consuming because that is part of life :-)

I've enjoyed wandering around your blog!

Dear Jane
I just wanted to say a big thank you for Saturday evening. I had a wonderful few hours and left feeling very inspired. You are truly gifted in hospitality and I hope God has further plans for you in the hosting department (not least because the food was fantastic and much appreciated).

Also thank you for this blog. I have to admit I do go around feeling guilty that I expect my children to 'do work'. I end up thinking 'am I going to damage them for life' in my quest for some structure and direction in their lives. Thank you for airing this viewpoint! I do believe in balance and having time to allow freedom of choice in activities and play, but also having a God directed and God centred framework.

I hope to see you Tuesday
Love Catherine

Re the point of your post, while too much unstructured "whitespace" time might not be conducive to education, surely the traditional overstructured paradigm didn't work so well either (i.e. boarding school with uniform crest on the jacket pocket, and the occasional caning.) As I've often said, "autodidaction" should be goal of homeschooling -- something that school kids might get in spite of their formal education.

I agree with you. I think that everything you do can be considered school but shouldn't be taken for granted....We don't do a lot of bookwork and sometimes is doens't feel like we do any school. But I've learned that even when I'm helping mom with her business I'm doing some kind of school.
I am writing a novel. It has about 300pages and 20 chapters. I had to do a lot of research for it since it is about the 1800's. I had to find out about clothes, work, school, money and value, and roles. It just started out as a hobby and now I plan on getting it published. I have been working on it for 8months and I'm still researching. Mom and I have recently strated the editing process. I have already editing by myself about 3x. When I'm writing my book I do History, spelling, and Grammar.

Mom was reading the TOS mag. and read about unschooling. We didn't do it on purpose but we do "unschooling" and we make everthing a teachable. I like being homeschooled. I know a lot more then most PS kids I know and I feel sorry for them they don't get to have the oppurunity.....

I have added you to my friends and welcome you to do the same!

Sincerely,
Myrtle

I'm really with you on this. It's so easy to lose sight of the vision. No matter how many children you have, each one deserves the best you can give them...and that isn't "anything goes". If God treated me like that, I'd be lost. Completely.

I can't be God, or even close. But I can emulate Him to the best of my abilities. And that means putting some thought and prayer and effort into directing and training and actually *raising* these kids. Not just hanging out and hoping for the best.

The probabilities of the best coming along while just hanging out waiting for it is pretty much...nil.
