Nov. 7, 2005 - Women's Fashions and Modesty

Tami wrote at her blog about women's fashions.  I agree with Tami about the unattractiveness of the new fashions, especially the ones made for juniors and young adults.  What bothers me most is how immodest they are.

Except for a brief period in my teens, I've always tried to dress modestly yet feminine.  I love shopping at thrift stores because I can usually find older styles that are still modest.  Sometimes when wanting new clothes the womens sections of department stores will have good things.  My husband even found me some nice clothes that were modest and stylish, and got me to like wearing fuscia as a color.

I have a five year old daughter who I've already taught to appreciate pretty clothes and be modest at the same time.  I'm amazed at how she notices girls her own age that are dressed immodestly.  Ever notice how even the clothes for young girls are inappropriately styled to make them look like little adults?

It is so important that as we live "in the world but not of the world" we train our girls to be strong women of God.  How have you trained your daughters?

That is one of my biggest stuggles. My girls are very good about wearing modest clothing as well, and it bugs us when we see other Christians wearing clothes that are so inapropriate. In fact, I wrote about the same thing on my blog today!

I so agree. I have 3 dd and I find it very difficult to find appropriate clothing for them. My oldest is 8 so mostly in her sizes its hard. I don't go into the trendy kids stores. Yuck! These clothes make them look like little tarts. My other struggle is with dress shoes. How do I find a size 2 that is under 1 1/2 to 2 inches tall. They have to be horrible for the development of their growing feet. My girls know about modesty. No two piece swimsuits here or bellies showing.

Just last week at church we saw two little girls (ages between 9-12) that were wearing these short skirts with no tights. THeir underpants were showing. My husband was shocked! It's just not safe!

I try to stick with Landsend dresses. My girls love Little House on the Prairie and so they tend to like the dresses that look prairie-ish.

I am so thankful for my 15 year old daughter and her friends who desire to be modest and feminine in the way they dress.
Thanks for posting this!

I agree! It's so hard to find anything anymore. I might have to give up blogging and start sewing. I'm just not any good at sewing.

My girls are 5 and 3... one of our struggles with them even playing with Barbies because there's no modest clothes for them and I didn't want them to WANT to wear those things! We're also going to be doing a study on the book "Princess and the Kiss" which I really do recommend for all ages... I wish it would have been read to me... I might have found more value in myself as a little girl.

Blessings to you and yours.
In Him,
Amy

Thanks so much for your book recommendations! I do so prefer and enjoy primary sources for history, and love finding great new childrens' books. I will do my best to hunt down the ones you recommended.;-) And you know what? Jay mentioned that you don't blog much, and I say (as would my hubby) "That's a GOOD thing!!" I'm planning on drastically cutting down on my 'puter time (upcoming post to explain). I have to prioritize, as it just so easily sucks up more time than it should! So, I commend you for doing other things BESIDES blogging! ...Like growing broccoli?...see, you ARE homesteading in the city! LOL!;-) Yes, I remember growing broccoli in the winter when I lived in WA state.
About modesty, I couldn't agree more, thanks for your lovely post! And can you believe that we actually found an old Barbie still in her box at an antiques store (we frequent them just for fun, never know whatcha might find) with an old-fashioned prairie dress, bonnet and apron on! And there are a few Barbies with modest outfits, they're the only ones we allow. Initially we weren't even going to *allow* Barbie, but...;-) Lately my dd has been inspired to make clothing for her dollies herself (yikes! this means I have to get a bit more savvy with my sewing machine so's I can teach her!).
But yes, our kids are especially appalled at the underwear ads hanging in stores. LOL! I'll never forget when my then 5yod pointed at a large poster in JCPenney's exclaiming, "Momma, she doesn't have ANY clothes on?! Why?" hmmmm... And our son is quick to notice and somewha embarrassedly point out immodestly dressed women as well. We don't watch t.v. except for videos and dvd's, so that helps, but it truly is SO sad how many girls (and women) at church do dress SO immodestly/carelessly! It saddens us, and is all the more important that we set a precedent of being a true lady. Thanks for your encouragement...it's nice to hear my heart spoken by fellow believers.
We also have, cherish and highly recommend that book, The Princess and the Kiss. It's a great introduction to the whole idea of courtship as well, and has been a favorite of ours for a few years now. There's also a book by the same author that is for boys, The Squire and the Scroll, which my 9yos has read numerous times.
blessings~
