Jun. 25, 2008 - Sincerity vs. Friendliness

In regard to male/female relationships growing up,  I often heard that I was to be careful not to "send mixed signals" to boys.  That it is wrong to "lead someone on" or "string them along".  I wholeheartedly agree with these statements and have even discussed them with my teenaged son, but have you noticed that as adults we do that very thing with friendships? Maybe a better word is aquaintances.

I understand that the goal is to be friendly.  Kind.  But, I wouldn't like to count how many times I've been told, " Oh, I love you,friend....Let's get together sometime",  or some other similar sentiment only to realize later that it is *never* going to happen.  This leaves me wondering....when did it become approriate to lie; to lead each other on and to send mixed signals in any relationship?

I say keep your flattery, friendliness and empty words!  I want honest relationships!  Can I get an amen?

It's my first time to your blog. And I will AMEN, your amen! Although, I will say that I believe some friendships are meant for a season in our lives....to come and go for one purpose. While others are here for keeps, even though you may not get to hangout all the time. Those are the kind of friendships you can "pick up right where you left off". You might enjoy reading "I'll Bring the Chocolate ~ Satisfying a woman's craving for friendship and faith". My girlfriends and I just used it as our theme for our annual retreat. Great, GREAT book. An easy read. And fun to read with others, if you're in to the book club thing.

Anyway, thanks for being transparent. I really appreciate that about friendships myself.

God Bless You,
Deborah

Something happen? Everything ok? You can get an Amen from me, sister. I've been so disillusioned by "friends" this past year. Yuck.

I would have to agree...However I do not think all who say things like this are just leading on. I just think that when we say something we should be faithful to follow up and act on our words. If we say " We should get together" then right then and there a place and time should be set. I have been guilty many times of not following up on my words. You bring up a good point that my friends may come to the conclusion that I am just saying words and do not mean it. Thanks for the reminder that actions must follow talk or else it is just empty noise. And that noise can harm friendships.
