Memory Eternal

Many of my blogosphere friends already knew this...

Dr Jaroslav Pelikan falls asleep in the Lord

Christ is Risen!

We have just learned that our seminary trustee and friend, Dr Jaroslav Pelikan, fell asleep in the Lord this afternoon, Saturday, May 13 around 2:30pm after a long battle with lung cancer.

Recognized by many as the most noted church historian of our times, Dr Pelikan made St Vladimir’s his parish home upon his reception into the Orthodox Church along with his wife in 1998.

Memory Eternal!

*****************

His 5 volume Christian Tradition: the Development of Christian Doctrines (I only read 2) were very helpful for me when I first started this journey.  Even more compelling was that he wrote this series and, several years afterwards, converted to Orthodoxy.   To his credit he never engaged (as far as I can tell) in "former church tradition bashing".  He humbly went on doing what he did best - write books on the history of Christianity.

Someone on my homeschooling yahoo group posted a wonderful 2003 interview with Jaralov Pelikan here (the reason for my blog entry today  .)

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am not sure I know what I am doing in regards to blogging but I suppose I will learn. I allowed my daughter to register too. I thought it would be a good way to encourage her to write more. I too am interested in church history. Do you have any good recomendations for starters?
How do you get a picture on the blog site?

Thank you for coming and commenting on my blog, Emily. I think you can't go wrong with reading Pelikan. In fact, you've reminded me that I need to add Pelikan to my recommended reading list - i forgot about them when I was making the list up. Also, Chatwicks History of the Church (can't remember the exact name) is pretty good. I saw from your blog that you are Catholic - I would ask your priest as I'm sure he will have an excellent recommendation for you.

Pictures on blogs: Its actually quite easy. First you have to use an online photo host like Flickr or Photobucket (I prefer flickr). Then with a few steps you can easily put them on your blog. If you go to the "forums" here at HSB, you can find a lot of technical help for jazzing up your blog.

HTH,
Deb
