Finally, Someone is asking the same questions I am

When I first heard that the FoxNews correspondent and his cameraman had been released last week I was quite relieved having feared the worst.  My happiness quickly turned to disbelief when in a radio interview with NPR the correspondent related how the condition for his release was conversion to Islam.  He relayed to the NPR host that of course he complied.   I was dumbfounded and hoped I had misheard.  I asked my husband, "Did he just say what I think he said??"  My husband sadly nodded "Yes".

I was physically ill not just thinking of all those people who have died for their faith but also for these men's souls.  What does this say about them, their faith (if any), and the Western understanding of the importance of faith?  Doesn't it matter to anyone?  I listened for a few days for ANY discussion about it.  I watched Fox, thinking that since it was a conservative news organization there would be someone speaking up.  But nothing.  Today, I found someone (actually several somones) in the media is thinking about this at Get Religion.

In much happier news... Today is the first day of the Church Year.  According to Tradition, after spending 40 days in the wilderness, on Sept 1st. Christ entered the synagogue and began his earthly ministry (Luke 4:14-20).  I realized this means that he spent the month of August in the wilderness.

September is also believed to be the month the Israelites entered the Promised Land after being in the desert 40 years.

I have been reading "Secrets of the Koran" by Don Richardson. In it he talks about Indonesian Catholics who either had to convert or die. Those who converted went through a forced circumcisoin...even females.

You bring up an interesting topic for discussion. I wonder what the orthodox church has to say about this. If I were in the place of the reporters and I wanted to get back to my family, would I lie and convert? Then, go to the orthodox church and see forgiveness? Would they grant it? Would the conversion just be null and void?

I know I would truly feel like Judas, betraying my Lord.

One thing that came out of this....the knowledge of forced conversion is now out there in the mainstream media. Perhaps now people who didn't understand Isalm now do or those who didn't believe they'd go this far, now realize they will....did God use these 2 reporters to show people that christianity is truly under attack.

Yes, I'm so glad forced conversions is finally making its way to the news media.

I don't know what I would do either in such a situation. However, the difference between you and I and what seemed to happen with these men -is that we would be remorseful about it. It seemed to this one guy that it was nothing. Like having to sign release papers before getting an operation. No embarassment or remorse. Thats what really struck me. He was so matter of fact about it. But, who knows what will happen with them as a result - God will contintue to tug at their hearts, I'm sure. He does not desire that anyone should perish. That is the hope for all of us.
