Getting off to a Bumpy Start

Posted in Homeschooling

The beginning of this school year has probably been one of my most difficult in recent memory.  I had planned on starting slowly at the end of Aug. but a weeklong illness put our plans on the back burner.  Since that time, someone in the family has been sick (with the exception of about 3-4 days this past week).  Add in several nearly sleepless nights, curriculum backorders, working with a new "taxi mom" schedule and I feel that its a been rather rocky start.

This week is our 2nd official week of school.  I bought a new curriculum for History called Winter Promise and so far am enjoying it.  It does need a few tweeks (what curriculum doesn't?) and I've already changed a few things.   Mostly I've taken out some activities I just don't feel like doing right now.   I like sliding into our schooling and since I wasn't able to do that so much in Aug. I'm doing it now.   One thing that I've actually switched has been the first read aloud.  The first novel scheduled for reading aloud was on Masada.  I'm sure is a great book, but I wanted to emphasize what the early church and Roman Persecutions rather than the Jewish Revolt and Masada.  The Purple Mantle has turned out to be a great alternative.  I've wanted to continue with our daily reading of the saints (haven't gotten that up and running yet either) and this fits right in since it weaves in real martyrs under the reign of Diocletian into a fictionalized story.  I've also been substituting the book Heroes for Truth for much of the spine right now.  Subjects like Martrydom of St. Stephen,  Paul's missionary journeys, Early Church Fathers, etc. fit almost perfectly with the daily assignments, just from an Orthodox perspective.  I already had these books on hand so it wasn't a hassle for me to make the switch.

I hopeful for next week.  We've almost run out of people to get this sickness! Also, all the BO's have arrived so I feel like I've got everything to make a proper go of it. It also helps that this weekend will be a bit less busy and I'll have time to look ahead and plan a little more thoroughly for the next week or two.

Hi Debbi,

Yes, we're doing the choir. Last week I walked around the parking lot to get some exercise, so yout might have seen me. I usually don't go in and wait inside, but stay outside on nice days, or read in the car.

I'll be there today in a Blue Honda Van- hope to see you.

Oh dear - pretty soon you'll start cycling back.

I agree, The Purple Mantle is great. You've just reminded me to put it on the "to read" shelf with my youngest.

Sep. 21, 2006 - You're encouraging me!

Your so-called rocky start is an encouragement to me. We started five weeks ago, but this is my first year homeschooling my now fifth-grade son and it is a big change. I've been adjusting like crazy every week, he's blown through the first math book and moved on to the next, I add or tweak something every week, and it's all such a moving target right now!

Your history and martyrs/saints comments are very interesting to me. We're working on Old Testament this year with our history studies, but reading through Gospels as well. And as an Episcopalian I look for a variety of materials (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant). Hmmm!
