Making Changes

Posted in Homeschooling
I have decided to do away with most our history program.  Its a good program, just not right for me.  For a while I've had this nagging feeling.  It was the same feeling I had with Sonlight.:  We are speeding through history with no chance to sink our teeth in.  Its like driving past St. Peter's Basilica and not stopping to take a look around at the place.

So we will come to a screeching halt where we left off (Celts) and take 2-3 weeks to read up about them, read a good book or two, do some map work, and add more writing into the mix.  It should be more relaxed because I'm not on "The schedule" anymore.  If the kids fall in love with things like Charlemagne or medieval seige machines we'll run with it.

On another note.  I discovered the movie Beuwulf and Grendel at Blockbuster.  Perfect for our Celtic studies.  Boy!  What a disappointment.   Here's some issues we had:

  • Since when did Grendel become a victim?
  • Brenden the Navigator spiritually fought Grendel??  Oh Pluueese.  Did he really have epilectic seizures?  And lets not even talk about the Baptizm scene (sigh).
  • I thought Hrothgar was a nobel warrior king, not a has-been drowning his sorrows in mead.
  • The nobel Witch woman, who of course has all the wisdom, where did she come from?  And she's pretty too.  Who knew?

Okay, thats just the first hour (Grendel's mom hasn't even shown up yet - I can't wait).  It was beautiful to watch and you did get a feel for living in tribal Scandinavia (movie was filmed in Iceland).  I haven't read all of Beuwulf, but enough to know what happens and get the feel.  Conan the Warrior did a better. In the movie we kept waiting for the characters to all hold hands and begin singing, "Give Peace a Chance."   The writers have messed with the source too much and its just not worth it to keep watching.

Dec. 15, 2006 - Thanks

First that is a beautiful picture. That is how we like to do history too. I've found most history programs just kind of skim over the surface and we feel rushed. We like to take our time and really get to know what we are studying.

Thanks for letting me know about my blog. I think I have fixed the issues. I haven't been getting email notification from HSB either.
