Today is the first "official" day of Pre-Lent.  It is the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee.

Like the Publican, let us bring tears of repentance to the Lord,
falling before Him as sinners before the feet of our Master.
For He desires the salvation of all men,
granting forgiveness to all who repent
and taking flesh for our sake
though He is God, co-eternal with the Father!

Kontakion for the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee

Several weeks ago my godmother and I were discussing what to read during Lent.  She suggested the Lenten Triodion but I was a bit unsure that it would fit the bill.   And now the Triodion has begun...so I'll be a bit late if I choose to do it.

Last night she and I had some time before Vespers and we chatted again about what to read.  She suggested the Bible and the Church Fathers.  That sounds a bit more up my alley.  I looked it up at St. Vlad's bookstore and if that is the correct one, that puppy is expensive!  I'm going to make doubly sure its the right one before buying it.

I also want to utilize this website.  Last year at the end of Lent, Elizabeth shared it on her blog and I tucked it away for this year.

Jan. 29, 2007 - friday kosova status announcement

Posted by luvmy2mks
The essence of what we heard about the announcement was: (1) kosova would not be given the word "independent", but really they will be. It's the lingo game. Many important countries, like the US, will "recognize" them, though, on an individual basis. The UN won't. (2) they wouldn't be given a seat at the u.n. (3) the u.n. would retain some sort of special power to "fire" elected officials and would retain a veto right over laws. This would obviously be in place to protect the serb minority from some extreme nationalist albanian politician.

But, kosova will have membership in the WTO and some other important orgs. They'll have an army. This is the rumors, anyway. We'll know for sure Fri. Blessings, Mary

How about Great Lent by Fr. Thomas Hopko? Or, Kh. Frederica's new one from last year.

Thanks Mimi. I ready Great Lent by Schmemann last year and will probably dip into it again some this year. Simply a wonderful read. I just noticed Fr. Thomas' book "Lenten Spring" at our church bookstore yesterday. I might give that one a try another year.

I read FMG's Lenten devotional book last year and was okay. IMHO, not her best work.

LoveMy2 - thanks for the info. I have a serbian monastery blog I visit occasionally but they haven't updated in several months.

I have downloaded the Lenten reading plan you mentioned. I was interested when I saw the first reading from the Didache. That is the third time that has come to my attention in 48 hours. Maybe God is trying to tell me something. I do think it may have some insight to my bread word study I have been doing. I was going to start reading on Sunday the 18 February. I wanted to finish prior to our family's Passover Seder on Holy Thursday.

I find every time I read "Great Lent" I get something new. I also do like "The Lenten Spring". I have a daily reading guide by Pres. Harakas (Emily?) that I enjoy as well.

Acceptance - isn't it funny how stuff like that happens. Like when you're first pregnant and suddenly notice that everyone seems to be having babies. May I suggest that you might enjoy having Jack Sparks book "The Apostolic Fathers" Its the texts along with some background information on each letter and the author. It is not all the writings that are suggested in the Lenten reading plan, but a good many. I find myself going back to it again and again.

Mimi- I forgot I have that same book too. I did this with the children after morning prayers. It was a very helpful resource.
