Bright Week

In the Orthodox church the week after Pascha is set aside as Bright Week.   The Paschal joy continues and no fasting is permitted.   Last week I asked the kids what foods they wanted to celebrate with.   The call went up for Bacon Pizza, Hot dogs and hamburgers, and Chinese.  Not exactly home cookin' but it does get me off the hook.  I heard from my daughter that one family at church was having their favorite food flown in from out of state... now that's some serious fast-breaking!  After Bright Monday services yesterday, some of us were saying we were going to have church withdraw.  We've gone from a few services a week, to once a day, to twice a day and now we won't have anything until Sat. evening Vespers.   I will miss the services but it is good to be home in the evenings again.  Hubby is also happy to have his family back.

Father Stephen has some very touching thoughts concerning Bright Week and the death of a friend titled: And Into the Brightness.

Enjoy.

What I've learned is that members of the EO sure know how to fast, but they are certainly good at breaking those fasts. I am always inspired by both.

Enjoy the fast-free week. I can't believe I'm already sick of chocolate and am already looking forward to June 4th, when we get to start it all over.

For us it is back to Atkins this week. And I feel GREAT already. Good grief! After all the carbs on Sunday felt soooo sluggish - almost drugged. Am very glad to be feasting this week on mock potato salad (cauliflower), chicken, shrimp, cheese, and salad left overs!!! B

Deb,

Thank you for sharing your Pascha with us.
I love reading about how others celebrate this glorious season. Bright Week... how aptly named!
And congratulations on your nomination at the HSB awards. It is very well-deserved.
Love To You and Yours,

This reminds me of the way Marissa likes to celebrate her birth... a birth week instead of a birthday. What a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of Resurrection Sunday and spread it out.

I have to say as a mom, I am not sure how your children handle the fasting season. We are not doing yeast... and couldn't have our typical "Homemade Pizza Friday." Marissa acted as if I was torturing her. She would have much prefered your home and Bright Week!

Thanks for the link to Father Stephen's blog... to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
