It is very common to see on the blog, in books, and in general on the web, lots of resources about homeschooling large families! Actually it can sometimes make me feel odd for only doing this with two!!
Sometimes it is easy to forget that there are those who (for various reasons) are only homeschooling with one child. They may only have one child by choice, due to infertility, due to illness or they may have more than one child but are only homeschooling one of them, due to problems in school, illness of that child, choice of what is best for each child in the family, or a step family where court orders are in place.
These families can feel sidelined in the general homeschool information! I have a close friend who is Mom to only one, and I often read suggestions thinking 'Well, what about her? She can't use the suggestions that they help each other, or let older help younger, or her child learn something by helping a younger sibling with it!' These suggestions are all great, but they don't apply to everyone and it can be difficult (especially if it is a situation they didn't choose) to sift through lots of 'help' that doesn't apply to them looking for a nugget that might!
I am really writing this to list some resources I have found for parents homeschooling only one! But also just to encourage you to look around you and pay attention to those who may be stuggleing with a unique set of challenges as they homeschool just one! Let's be there to encourage, offer companionship, activities for that child to work with others, and just simply support them in their unique situation. If someone around you has a dozen kids you can see that they might need some help now and then. But with only one it is easy to assume that they have an easy road, which might not always be the case!
Here are some links I have found.
Here are some blogs of other Homeschooling only one Mom's and Mum's! Pop on over and say hi, especially if you are in a similar situation, but even if you are not. Be sure to let them know what a great job they are doing!
- Jimmie's blog 'One child homeschool policy' is a tounge in cheek title of a homeschooling Missionary Mom of one in China. Her blog is full of wonderful pictures of the land where she lives and lots of positive posts about all the wonderful things they do! She makes one sound like fun (which it should be!)
- Danielle's blog 'Only a boy' is her story as she seeks to homeschool her one boy as a single Mom. She has struggles at times that I can't relate to and others I can. I'm adding this one because she is a great encouragement to me and many others on the blog with her upbeat and loving comments. I'm sure it would encourage her to 'meet' others who are doing this job with only one or as single parents.Pop over and say hi to my friend Danielle.
- Daredhead is my best friend back in the states and at the moment she is homeschooling one (georgeous!! Though I am biased!) little 'princess'. She is also battleing MS, so that brings it own set of challenges to homeschooling.
- Three of our UK bloggers are homeschooling only one at home too. So be sure to say hi to Mamasmurf, FIARMom, and Cazza (who still hasn't written anything on her blog but you can leave a message).
This post wasn't meant to embarrass anyone or point any finger! Except to point out some woman who are doing an excellent job with the one they are responsible to educate!! Well done to these Mom's of one!! We salute you!!
