So today was the day of the scheduled appointment with the consultant. You know. The one I screamed and shouted to get for Dh before he was released from hospital two weeks ago? Yeah. That one!
It went quite well actually. For starters the Dr actually remembered Dh from seeing him while he was in hospital. That is always a good start when the Dr has some idea who you actually are!
To sum up the session. He is pleased that Dh is (obviously) better than when he was admitted to hospital. (I wonder what tipped him off? Maybe the lack of screaming!) He has started to suffer some small muscle spasms in his back in the past 24 hours since running out of one of the medications though.
He wants to see him again in four weeks time. If his pain gets worse before that, then we are to phone up and come in earlier. If we get to four weeks and he is not any further improved or is worse than we will talk of schedualing a scan at that time.
We asked about chiropractic care and he advised against it. His reason was interesting though! He said 'It isn't a good idea because if you have damaged a disk in your back than the chiropractor would almost certainly make it much worse.' Up till now they have insisted that he hadn't done anything to his disks and have assured us it couldn't possibly be a disk injury!!!! Now it is a good idea to avoid the chiropractor in case they are wrong!!! Well, the good bit is they are admitting they could have been wrong, I guess!
We also asked if the TENS unit I have might help and if it was safe to use in these circumstances. We were given the all clear for that so I'll try to get it out and running in the next couple of days and see if it helps relieve some of his pain with less drugs.
We are now down to three drugs and off the sleeping tablets. So we will see how he does in the next couple of weeks and take it from there. He is deteremined to start doing things like normal and see how he gets on.
Thank you for all of your prayers. We appreciate them. Please just pray that first of all God will heal him completely. If God chooses not to do that than we are asking Him to make things 'symptomatic' enough to cause action to be taken. What we don't want is to hang in limbo for months. So either way, we need God to move and help us to know the right path that He wants us to walk at this time.
Please pray for Dh as well. He has been great as a patient, but it is getting a little wearing now. He still can't drive on one of the meds he is on, so he has lost all independence. He also gets car sick when he isn't the driver, so that kind of complicates matters. Thankfully he can walk to work, so that is easier (and good excersise too). It is hard to be here but unable to do so many thing he can see need doing. We are all trying to pick up the slack, but we don't do things quite as well as he does them, and also I'm quite busy so can't get it all done!
Anyway, just wanted to make sure we updated you. Thanks again! |
Jul. 16, 2008 - Second opinion from a Chiropractor
Chiropractors seek to fix the problem while traditional doctors only medicate or recommend surgery. It would be interesting to see if the chiropractor recommends traditional treatments like surgery. Most chiropractors are against surgery, at least as a first resort. So if a chiropractor seems favorable to it, that may be a good indication that surgery is a consideration. This was the situation with my dh's back injury. The chiropractor recommended surgery almost from the get go. He held off for nearly a year before he had the surgery. The chiropractor had been spot on. Surgery, in his case, fixed the problem.
I hope you don't mind unasked for advice. I hope your dh feels better soon. When your back hurts, it seems like everything hurts, doesn't it?
