No matter how old I get and my children get we love Adventures in Odyssey. I am currently listening to the The Best Small Town series. It is vey interesting and enjoyable. I buy several of the episodes from Audible.com every few weeks and listen to them on my mp3 player. I also make cds for my youngest to listen to before she goes to bed. Even though she is 13 she really likes Odyssey. |

We have what we call no tv Tuesday's. We do watch one documentary on Tuesday's for school but other than that no TV. Unfortunately for me that is pretty hard. I am sorry to say that I find myself more addicted to the tv than I would like. I have just recently rediscovered the joy of reading and have been reading alot lately so this helps. I set a goal for myself to read 75 books before the end of the year. I only have 4 to go. I do count the books that I listen to on my way to and from work.
We did not finish everything that I wanted to yesterday for school but that is one of the benefits of homeschooling. Whatever we don't finish can be done the next day. I have found with my children that it never pays to plan to far in advance. I do have a general idea of where I want to go and how we will end up there but I usually don't make any concrete plans further than a week at a time and then it needs to be pretty flexible. We didn't get arround to doing the Dickens exercise yesterday so that will be on the definately do list today. My daughter mixed up the sugar cookies last night so will bake them right after lunch. Normally I would have had her do them this morning but she babysits for a Mom's group on Tuesdays. We didn't get to the Art yesterday so that will be on the list. The symbol for today is the Christmas Tree and the Chrismon symbol is the Star of David. That will probably be all that we can get to today as we have a shorter day because of the babysitting. We of course will do all the other basics, math, english and biology.

Every year we study Christmas related things during December. I know really original right. Our emphasis is usually Christ centered but we do throw in some secular things. Today we are going to be taking the Christmas Scripture Quiz from makedisciples.com. The address is http://www.makedisciples.com/Christmas/quiz.htm. Before taking this quiz I didn't really realize how many things that we take as fact are really just tradition. Take it for yourself and see how you do. Also today we are going to do an exercise on Charles Dickens in preparation for reading "A Christmas Carol" . My daughter is going to read a letter written my Dickens and make a list of some of the vocabualry that may be difficult for a present day reader then she is going to rewrite the letter. The address for the letter is http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/chatback/english/dickens.html. For art today we are going to look at "The Nativity" by Albrecht Durer. We have studied this artist before so it is interesting to see his take on the Nativity. The Christmas Symbol that we will be learning about is the Wreath. Find out more here http;//www.e-wreath.com/wreathhistory.html. We will be reading about the Snowmaiden from Russia. http;//www.therussianshop.com/russhop/christmas/snowmaiden.htm. And our Chrismon symbol for today is the 3 fish symbol which represent the trinity. http;//www.paperchrismons.com/pages/colorme/fishes3clr.htm. We will be making sugar cookies from a kit that my daughter received from the moms group that she babysits for. Along with all of the above we will be doing Bible study, math and grammar along with Biology.

My DD is in the 8th grade this year and we are using a combination of Ambleside online and Old fashioned education. Only been schooling about two months and have already restarted twice. This seems t obe a pattern with my youngest. I have yet to find something she is excited about. In Our Co-op she is taking PA History which is being taken from a Literature perspective. She is kind of enjoying this as she loves to read Then she is also taking speech and writing which she is hating. She does not like to stand up in front of people and talk. She has no problem if she is dancing but does not like to speak. She is also taking sign language which she is enjoying.

Today Our eldest daughter Faith, who is 19, took her practical test for her cosmetology license in Harrisburg, so my Husband and youngest daughter Hannah went to the Whitaker Center. The Center is a science museum with exhibits on the human body, fiber optics and nature. They enjoyed themselves very much. Today we did the second day in our advent study. It is nice to get together as a family and study the Bible. I receved a perfect score on the Bible lesson for a course that I am taking online. |

School, How to make it more exciting for Hannah. I have tried several things but nothing seems to work. Today she did all her Bible Class for the week and worked on her math in the morning then after lunch she did her Art History started her state study (Utah this week) . Wrote a report on her field trip to Gettysburg and started two papers one on a little booklet she read about the Holocaust and one on a book she bought at Gettysburg. This kid can read a book in two days. It is really hard to keep her in books. |

I am very new to this whole bloggiong thing but I love reading and learning from others. I have been homeschooling for about 16 years now. I have graduated two and am currently homeschooling my 12 year old daughter. I am really having difficulty getting her excited about learning. She loves to read but i can't seem to get her excited about any one thing. Oh well I will keep trying.. |
