Getting better
Posted By Foxvalleyfamily
Julie is on the mend!

She has been taking it pretty easy at home - watching movies, doing 'quiet' activities (reading/painting/etc.) and although she is still rather sore, she is gradually getting her strength and spirit back.

(You know she's feeling better when she starts teasing her brother again)

Unfortunately she has lost quite a bit of weight ( and if you know Julie - you know she really can't afford that!) so our goal now is to get her eating well again.
(Unfortunately, this isn't an easy feat...not only is her tummy still tender - but one of the instruments that they used during surgery cut her mouth inside.)
Still - she has managed some scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, some cheese bread, and even a few "Potato Ole's" from Taco Johns.

I think it's time to break out Grandma's Sugar Cookie recipe!
If that doesn't encourage her....I don't know what will...

An Eternity Filled with Regret--Dec 23, 2009

An Eternity Filled with Regret

An eternity filled with regret.

A soul that now is lost.

He bore the sins of his life

Never laying them at the cross.

He never accepted the greatest gift.

The one that would set him free.

Jesus willingly laid his life down.

When He was nailed to the tree.

Jesus died to offer life to all,

Who humbly accept.

So no soul would spend eternity

filled with torment and regret.

Jesus is no longer that baby in the manager, nor is he still hanging on the cross. He is very much alive and in Heaven. Never lose sight of the real reason Jesus was born, died and was resurrected. Don't let the wordly distractions keep you from remembering what is truly important.

Homeschooling Through High School ~ Merry Christmas!
Posted By HomeschoolBlogger Company Blog in Homeschooling Through High School
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

I want to share a couple of video clips which I located on YouTube...they are from a Public Television show that I have seen many Decembers over, titled, "Rick Steve's Christmas in Europe." These two clips share my favorite parts of the show.  I love the peacefulness, the simplicity, and the picture of the family generations coming together.  I hope you enjoy it, too!

Rick Steve's Christmas in Europe ~ Part 9

Rick Steve's Christmas in Europe ~ Part 10

May God bless you and your families as you focus on the beauty of God's plan for His children, and all that "Emmanuel" means to you.

Weightloss Wednesday ~ At Christmas time!!!
Posted By CelticMom in Weightloss Wednesdays

(click on the graphic for more information)

It's Weightloss Wednesday again, and this week I'm simply chuckling.  Two days before Christmas and I'm to step on the scale?  lol  I don't think so.  Fudge, cookies, buckeyes, flavored holiday coffee creamers, pumpkin bread and muffins, homemade white bread, comfort cooking and more abound in my home, and with it the feeling of contentment, joy, and love.  Kill all that with a number?  Not me.  I'm content to work on little things - parking at the back of the parking lot and walking in, trying to drink all my water in a day, adding a serving of fruit or veggies to my day, etc.  And just being Aware:  aware of what goes in my mouth, how much, and when to say when.  January will come soon enough, and with it all the harsh realities of getting fit.  I'm content to stay in my own reality for the next week or so, thank you very much. Ü

My Birthday
Posted By Kuhn Family

I turned 50 years old on December 18th.  It was just another day.  It didn't bother me.  I don't why certain birthdays make people have a mental breakdown.  A number is  just a number.

We didn't do anything special.  Darrell went to work.  I went to work.  Came home and picked up my potluck dish and Tony and went to my work's meeting/potluck/party.  We had a nice time.

I was presented with the biggest achievement award that you can get from my employers.  I won the Guiding Principles Award.  It is only given to one recipent a year.  The 2009 recipent was me.  I was very surprised and honored.

Cookie Day...
Posted By CelticMom in Holiday Bits

Yesterday was Cookie Day in our home - a first.  Usually we make goodies all through the holiday season, but never sugar cookies (don't care for them; don't pelt me with sprinkles, they're just too sweet) and never as a special day.  Considering that I am a new aunt twice over this year, however, I decided to just throw all common sense to the wind and invited the niece (14) and both nephews (5 and 5 months) over for the day to make cookies with my boys (15 and 11).  It was a surprisingly smooth day (I'm thinking my guardian angels worked overtime, and you would too if you knew the 5-year-old, LOL).

Here are some photos of our day.  All told, the kids rolled, cut, and baked three jumbo chubs of sugar cookie dough.

I'm thinking there had to be 11-12 dozen sugar cookies, easily.  About half got decorated, because a lot of people prefer them un-iced (me, for one, if I'm going to eat any. Hey, I'm a woman - did you think I'd let my distaste of them stop me from eating a COOKIE??).  The five-year-old did great - his attention span for the cutting out of the cookies lasted between 45 minutes to an hour.  He moved on to coloring for a bit...

... then pulled out the B word.  That word is Not Allowed in our home, so it didn't go well for him.  He's here often enough to know that you don't even think the word BORED in my presence.  He got a reminder and a warning, then went off to play with the cars and car rug for awhile.  He must have looked like he was having too much fun, because my niece decided she needed a break and got down and played with him for a bit.  The baby and I went upstairs to vist bloggyland for a few minutes, and she must have gone back to making the cookies, because the next thing I heard was this:

"A___, your neighbor's car alarm is going off.... weee-oooo-weeee-oooo.... A____, now all of your neighbor's cars and your cars are going off... WEEEE-OOOO-WEEE-OOOO-WEEE-OOOO..."

And what did I hear from the kitchen?

A perfectly timed chorus of "Shut Up, B_____!!!"

Okay, sure, shut up isn't normally allowed, but in this case a) it was funny, and b) it was warranted.  They saved me from yelling down the stairs to quiet up a bit.

Shortly after this, a 5-year-old blond head popped up around the corner of my desk, and this is what I was confronted with:

"Aunt Shaymie, I'm bored."

Delivered with a self-satisfied grin.

And received with a time-out on the couch in the library, followed by a Talk.

After that was resolved, the Star Wars guys came out, the cookies were all finally baked, lunch was served, a break was was taken in which the baby became a battering tool against Jigger, who fell back dramatically with loud sound effects to the belly laugh of the 5-month-old....

... and then the decorating commenced.

Yep, I used store-bought cookie dough, store bought icing (hate the stuff), store bought everything I could.  It's amazing the corners you willingly cut when a) you want the day to run as smoothly as possible, and b) you really don't care for the final product no matter how it's made, lol.

The baby and I spent lots of time cuddling - who wouldn't have??

Even after all that cuddling, at the end of the day I still felt like this, but in a good way:

The kids had a ball and went home tired and with oodles of cookies.  That alone is a Christmas present to their parents, I'm thinking.  And now, I'll leave you with Piper's favorite cookie - his Scottish bagpiper.  Yep, he made bagpipes, too, but those got eaten rather quickly.  And in case you're wondering which cookie cutter he manipulated for the pipes, it was the camel.  I'll let you picture that in your heads, lol.

We are having fun
Posted By JoAnn in Family
Hi everyone, how is your week going?  We are doing great.  We've been on our Christmas break since last Thursday, and we've been having a great time.  On Friday night Paul and I went to Paul's Christmas party, without the kids.  It was a fun date night.  Lots of good food, friendship and fun.  Saturday I went to a mom's lunch at Perkins.  It was nice to sit with other mom's and talk about our homeschool struggles, and know we are not alone.

But Sunday has been the best day so far.  It all started out last week when my mom mentioned she had a few Christmas items she wanted to bring out to us.  (She sends us money for the kids and we buy their main gifts from them so that we don't have to pay for shipping).  But she always has little things for the kids, and their stockings, and some gifts she had for Paul and me she wanted to drop off.  The weather wasn't the best, and so she decided to come out on Sunday, that way she could see Paul too.  Well, one thing led to another, and my whole family came out for a wonderful early Christmas and a ham lunch.    It was so much fun.

Can you tell Paulie is very excited?  All those green presents and stockings are from my parents.IMG_0466

My sister always has to rub Paulie's head after he gets a haircut.

I like cooking when family is over.

I like my mom's shirt, it says, "Who needs Santa when you've got Grandma."

We had a great evening and opened up some gifts.  The bulk of the kids gifts from my parents will wait for Christmas day, but they gave us our gifts on Sunday.  My parents blessed us with the one gift we wanted the most, a Roku to work with our Netflix account.
Yes, we are both very excited, I just tend to show my excitement more.

We gave up satellite tv about a year ago, just couldn't afford it anymore.  We like the digital antenna service we have.  It gives us a movie station, but most importantly a 24 hour sports station.    But we also joined Netflix, and it has been great.  With our subscription, we get unlimited movies and shows we can watch instantly on our computer.  We have a nice computer screen, but it's not easy to watch movies on it while relaxing on the couch.  That's where a Roku device comes in handy.  You connect it to your tv, and it connects to your Netflix account through your internet and anything you can watch on Netflix, you can now watch on the TV.    Oh my goodness, we've been using it so much.  We watched a movie on it right away.  And though they don't have as many good tv shows to be able to watch instantly, it does have Deadlist Catch and Surviorman.  So I have them sitting in my queue, and we get to pick what we want to watch and when.  It's better than cable.  And we also found out that they will be offering MLB.tv on it this year.    That's the only way we've been able to watch baseball since giving up satellite, is through the computer.  And now, we can use Roku for that too.  By far it was the best gift we got.

And then the next day my dad bought Paulie a gift.  He felt Paulie might have some musical talent, so he bought him a guitar.

Paulie has really been enjoying it, well actually we all have.  I'm going to try to learn the guitar too.  So Paulie and I will be learning together.

Well this entry has been long enough.  I'll write again sooner, so the next entry doesn't have to be so long.  Hope you are enjoying your week.

Twas the Week Before Christmas
Posted By Jenn 4 Him in 2009 Journal

Good day to you!  I hope this finds you all ready for the big day.  We are done with our shopping.  I do need to get busy wrapping, though.  It's the one thing that I always put off as long as I can.  I always think that will be different the next year.

Our week is not going to my plan.  I had set up to be busy playing with friends today and tomorrow, to pass the time more pleasantly.  Grace came down with a fever last Monday and has been very sick since.  I took her to the doctor yesterday and he says it is a bad virus, maybe the flu or mono.  Time will tell.  So of course our plans were canceled.  I am praying she can feel up to the celebrations we have planned towards the end of the week.

Did you notice the stockings hung with care in the photo above?  Last week I found stocking hangers at Good Will.  I could not believe my good fortune.  I needed three and there they were.  I've always wanted to hang our stockings over a fireplace.   I may not have a fireplace next year, so this is a treat.  And I did not spend a lot for the pleasure!

It snowed a little here last night.  It's a good packing snow, so the boys have been out playing in it.  Grace watched them from the inside make a snowman for her.  They also joined in a good old-fashioned snowball fight with some neighbors.  Good fun.

My husband has been given Thursday through next Monday off.  We are looking forward to that.  Tomorrow we are expecting to receive our new toy, aRoku.  Do you know what that is?  I've only just learned that they exist.  I did not know that I needed one until very recently.  (lol)  They are a device so that people can watch movies via the internet on their TV.  Since we don't have cable or a laptop, this will expand our choices a lot.  We already love Netflix.  This is sure to be even nicer.  Having more choices without paying extra is a great thing.  We don't watch network TV anymore.

One more thing, to answer those of you who have asked, I do love my new vacuum, although, it doesn't vacuum by itself, the only fault I can tell that it has.  Maybe I need one of those robot ones.

That's what is going on here this week.  I wish you and yours a very merry and healthy Christmas.

~Jenn

It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year?
Posted By BookwormMN

Here are some little known (or maybe unknown) facts that are not paid much attention to (I didn't just write this up on my own - I was looking on the internet and such, I can't not take all the credit on having these ideas ).

How Christmas got started:  It did not start out with Jesus being born in the manger or Santa Claus giving gifts.  It was actually a pagan holiday of worshiping the sun!

Gift Giving:  We may say we're following what the wise men did or after God's Gift to us - but we're giving them to each other - not to Jesus.

The Christmas Tree: Jeremiah 10:2-5 "Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.  For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.  They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.  They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must not go.  Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good."  I also read that the wreath was used to decorate the buildings for worship.

Then, I and most people just think that they're making it into a Christian holiday now, so it's ok.  But check out a few more verses..  Matthew 15:9
"In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."  Mark 7:9 "Full well lye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

The Candy Cane Legend

Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?
Stripes that are red
Like the blood shed for me
White is for my Savior
Who's sinless and pure!
"J" is for Jesus, My Lord, that's for sure!
Turn it around
And a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd
Was born for Me!

(Finally, something Christmas started as Christian!!)

Well, with all that startling news (and only two days until Christmas ), how shall we end this?  Well, I read something in a magazine that was talking on the same thing, that I sort of liked.  It went something like this...  If you feel that you should not do Christmas, then don't.  But don't treat badly the ones that do.

Well, have a very Merry Christmas!!  We're planning to have family over at our house both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but there is also supposed to be a big snow storm starting tomorrow night, I sure hope that doesn't affect to many things!!!

God Bless, Amber
