I'm In It For The Long Haul

Saturday, February 11, 2006 - Believing in God -- What's In It For You?

Why do you believe in God?  That may seem like a silly question, but I don't think we all believe in God for the same reasons.

I've heard people say you need to believe in God so that He will improve your life.  What does that mean?  Will He improve your financial status, your health, your relationships?  Is that why we should believe in God?

I've heard others say we should believe in God or we'll go to hell.  Is that the reason we should believe in God?  Do we just want to stay out of hell?

I think we should believe in God because we can't believe anything else.  It is the only option.  It doesn't matter what God can or will do for us.  We believe in God because He created us.  He is in charge.  It's His world not ours.

If we believe in God for this reason, then we can't help but want to do what He has asked us to do.  We won't waiver in our belief just because of our conditions here on earth.  Some people turn to God in times of trouble.  Some people turn away from God in times of trouble.  If they truly believe in God because He is the one true God and the creator of all, they wouldn't ever have to turn to Him.  They would always be focused on Him.

Why do you believe in God?  Because there's something in it for you or because you can't help but believe in Him?

Sunday, January 22, 2006 - Patience Please

I think motherhood was intended to teach us patience.  Patience with kids, our husbands and ourselves.  There are times that I want instant recognition or instant proof that what I'm doing is productive.  It all takes patience.  As we home school our kids we need to keep this in mind.  Their learning doesn't happen overnight.  In fact, it takes their entire childhood.  I'm in the position to see both sides.  I've got a 19 year old that has left our home and a 2 year old that is still in diapers.  As I deal with the 2 year old, it helps to be reminded that my 19 year old didn't grow up overnight.  Day to day, consistent and loving work got him where he's at.  And we can rest assured that as we are learning patience, God is patient with us.

This has been on mind a lot lately.
I even put a bulletin board up in my Bible class about it:

About Me

Eighteen years after sitting my 5 year old down for his first day of school, we're still at it. We've graduated 2 and have one ready to graduate this year. Three more are working slow and steady at learning what they need to know to be the kind of adults God wants them to be.
