Egyptian Art (November 19)

I'm teaching a class called "Art Through History" for our homeschool group this year.  Tyler and I have used Harmony Fine Arts as our art curriculum for the past couple of years and have loved it, but had trouble actually finding the time to get the projects done.  This class is the perfect solution - I'm still using Harmony as the base, and the scheduled twice a month slot forces us to make the time.

Our first four classes focused on prehistoric art - I hope to get those pictures up here soon.  Our November, December, and early January class will all be about Egyptian art.  The first class of this month, we started a canopic jar project.  The jars are Wilton's candy making bottles built out on the bottom with paper towels and masking tape, then covered with plastered gauze.  We built the head on the bottle tops/spouts with Model Magic.  For today's class, we painted our jars, discussed the style of Ancient Egyptian paintings and did some small-scale "murals" in the same style.

Two weeks ago, Tyler and Allison molded their jars' heads.

Today, Tyler, Efrain, and Karl worked hard on their painting (Tyler's is some sort of alien creature called a Hole-Head - Efrain made a dragon and Karl created a Volcano God.)

James stayed with Grandma for a nap last time, so he didn't have a bottle to paint, but he did enjoy smashing a piece of Model Magic and then painting it.  Ryan opted to stay with Grandma both days.

Numbers & Games (November 18)

Ryan's been working hard on learning all of his numbers and how to put them in order.  He loves to work in his math book - updating the calendar is his favorite part of each school day.

Of course, what Ryan does, James must do, too.  He has lots of fun playing with the number cards, even if he hasn't learned what most of them are quite yet.

This afternoon was our monthly Game Club meeting with our homeschool group.  Tyler most enjoyed playing Battleship with his friend, Efrain.  Ryan flitted from activity to activity.  He fished for letters, watched Battleship, which he desperately wants to be able to learn to play, played with our Look and Find game, and beat me soundly at animal dominoes.

Eagles and Turtles and Explorers, Oh My! (November 17)

This morning, Ryan and James and I visited Lakeside Nature Center with five other families from our homeschool group.  Six moms, nine preschoolers, and six older siblings all enjoyed puzzles, books, birdwatching, putting on puppet shows, coloring pictures of owls, and most of all, the animals!  We saw bald eagles, snakes, turtles, frogs, toads, salamandars, opossums, rats, rabbits, bugs, and more.

James and his friend, Wednesday, put on a puppet show for us:

Ryan put on a show with his friend, Angus, too.

James and Isabel enjoyed watching a woodpecker!  Ryan took a turn watching the birds, too.

The nocturnal animal tunnel is Ryan's favorite part, but James loves the microscope and touch & feel table.

Ryan also really likes the snakes, but James prefers the turtles.

Tyler had his one day a week enrichment program today, and this week was a special one.  His class put on a performance of "Colony Lost".  Tyler played one of Queen Elizabeth's guards, and did quite well in his scene.  I'll have to see if I can get the video uploaded.

Welcome to our world! I'm the homeschooling mommy of three beautiful, noisy, messy, homeschooled-from-the-start little boys. My mom and I also run a home daycare with a daily preschool program. This blog is a photographic chronicle of the highlights and joys, trials and troubles of our journey through life with our "dirt magnets".
